Hiding
Troy Feb 2020
Lately
Masculinity has been feeling like an excuse

Men
are expected to fight ****** battles

Men
Are expected to be rough

Men
Are expected to never take no for an answer

Men
Are expected to take what we want even when they say no

Men
Are expected to never take off the mask

Men
Are expected to never show emotion

Men
Are ready to give up

Men
Are ready to die

I wonder what would happen if we could no longer hide behind the masc-ulinity
Oof we tried

"What will you do with your theatre degree?"

I will work day in, day out
To become someone else
To tell a message
To the entire world
a story

I will crack open the skulls
Of many making them
Rethink things
They once thought they knew

I will show everyone
Who doubted me
That they were wrong
And I have the capability
To do anything I please
As long as I believe in myself
And work hard

"I don’t know."

Nightmares

You are the star
of each and every
one of my nightmares,
in most of them

You hand me a sugar cube
With the brightest smile
So welcoming
so warm

I greedily accepted
Placing it on the tip
Of my tongue

Until reality sets in
I did not get delivered sugar,
But rather

salt

This is what abuse is:
Hoping you will get sugar
Every time

But always ending with salt
For seventeen year.
I'm okay.

Dear Women
Troy Jan 2020
There once was a princess who lived in a far away land, and she knew she needed the one. The man who would come and rescue her.

Record scratch + freeze frame

Dear women,
Some men ****
I would like to apologize for the ones who created a terrible name for myself
The ones who made fairytales to make you seem like you need us
The ones who made you feel like a princess in a tower desperately waiting for a knight
The ones who earn more than you for the same amount of work
The ones who took advantage of you
The ones who made you feel useless
The ones disguised as a knight with a terrible secret
The ones who took off their armor to reveal a dragon

I am here to apologize for them and to let you know, the armor and sword are waiting for you. Take control of your life and fight those dragons. If you believe in yourself and never let the dragon tell you any differently, you can write a new story where

I loved her once.

Suicide is a woman
I happen to know

She has fled
With many lovers,

Some people I knew,
And others I didn’t

She plays with my
Hair like guitar strings

She gently runs her
Hand down my face

Most nights with her
Are like a daydream

Whispering sweet nothings
Into the lovely abyss

I call my own mind
But it is not mine

She has me
No
She had me

I am not the same person I was
And I hope I am never him again.
I'm okay :) No need to worry pals.

Not everything works out
Troy Aug 2020
Do you think I can have
one more kiss?

I'll find closure on your lips,
and then I'll go.

Maybe also one more breakfast,
one more lunch, and one more dinner.

I'll be full and happy

and we can part.

But in between meals,
maybe we can lie in bed one more time.

One more prolonged moment
where time suspends indefinitely

as I rest my head on your chest.

My hope is if we add up the "one mores,"
they will equal a lifetime,

and I'll never have to get to the part
where I let you go.

But that's not real, is it?

There are no more "one mores."

I met you when everything
was new and exciting,

and the possibilities
of the world seemed endless.

And they still are.

For you, for me.

But not for us.

Somewhere between then and now,
here and there,

I guess we didn't just grow apart,

we grew up.

When something breaks, if the pieces
are large enough, you can fix it.

Unfortunately, sometimes things
don't break, they shatter.

But when you let the light in,

shattered glass will glisten

And in those moments,

when the pieces of what we were
catch sun,

I'll remember just how beautiful it was.

Just how beautiful it'll always be.

Because it was us.

And we were magic

That wasn’t meant to be

Little kids are smart

When I was little
I felt very brittle
Because I was noncommittal

People come and go
Leaving many in woe
And we miss them so

I decided to break the pattern
And make my own friends

I have fallen out of love with writing poetry

I feel as though writing poetry feels like writing a laundry list of things to do

So I took a break

and my love returned

Remember to take a break every now and then :)

Dear Society

Dear Society,

I am so tired of you dictating my every move.
I am so tired of changing who I am for you.
I am so tired of you telling me I will never be good enough.

Dear Society,

I hope you die
