Lollipops and Lemonade
Bill Dynes Dec 2014
Chimney smoke from a neighbours house seeps through an open frame.
It conjurers images of home in days of innocence, long gone.
Cowboy games and scabs on knees and ice cream as a treat.
Nightmare monsters slain with a mothers hand across a brow.
Lollipops and lemonade a perfect day complete.

ONE NIGHT STAND
Bill Dynes Dec 2014
I picked him a rose to remember me by.
A crimson bloom of passion promised .
The engine ticking over, keen to race into the dawn.
Furtive glances at the timepiece.
Tolerated.
Why should I feel tolerated?
A task to be endured like taking out the garbage.
Getting stains out of a sheet.
I know I joke a little but we had  fun him and me.
Every clown has a silver lining right?
A brief salute ******* to a brow.
And in a roaring cloud he's on his way.
Petals left, discarded like a post ****** *****.
Crushed into the gutter at my feet.
Pancakes for breakfast.
Coffee.
Silence.

A MAN LIES DOWN IN MACHO
Bill Dynes Dec 2014
And will you stay here at my side,
And will you hold my hand?
Will you welcome me with solace
As a stranger in this land?
Oh my smile will never waver
But you'll see behind my eyes
There's a truth, not quite forthcoming,
Built in, permanent disguise.

And will you stay the mocking voices
that are screaming in my head
Will you quieten the questioning,
The words long left unsaid?
Will you show me how to show them
how much love I have inside?
Barely scratching at the surface
Strong enough to pierce the pride?

And will you have strength and patience
To excuse this bold façade?
Will you know the shame I cling to
Overcome and over awed?
While senses swim in puzzlement
New colours, sounds and sights,
Smells of life and death pervading
Brand new treasures, endless nights.

And will you exercise discretion
When she comes, as duty states?
Will you offer tea and biscuits
While she sits and Knows Her Place?
She the mother of my children
Will attend to sigh and cry
While years of living in my shadow
sire secret gloating, as I die.

And will you promise there'll be angels
To escort me to my fate?
Will you bother God with praying
Far too little, much to late!
As I watch my self decreasing,
And eternal sleep approach.
And all the hanging-heads assemble,
Witness Death and I elope

And will you try to fill the silence
When the boy sits at my side
Two suits of armour, never yielding
Bolstered by each others pride.
Lips form around apologies
To tell him I was wrong.
My disappointment's disappointment
Left unuttered, my swansong.

And will you promise there'll be choirs,
People weeping there in rows.
Muttered platitudes of comfort,
Midst a hymn that someone chose.
Will you promise there'll be angels
Otherwise then what's the point?
With trumpets, herald my arrival
And my fevered brow anoint.

And will you try to understand me
Will you promise not to judge
I was blinded and misguided
Used a fist and bore a grudge!
I'd exchange it in an instant
For a chance to right some wrongs
Hold my wife and hug my children
All my angels all along.
For the lifelong brave who just cant face the bravery any more!

Paper Chains
Bill Dynes Dec 2014
There was once upon a bright clear morn,
A piece to state that you were born.
Embroiled within life’s tapestry
And safe inside a registry,

Some years in school and well I never!
Other pieces say ‘you’re clever’.
Thus qualified in math and lit’
You see what you can make of it.

Snuggled up beside, or not too far,
A piece that lets you drive a car.
To grasp the wheel and thus to steer,
From here to there, and there to here.

When cupid chances upon your head,
A piece to certify you’re wed’.
The threshold crossed, confetti flung,
A foot placed firmly on the rung.

With currency saved you joined the race,
A piece says you now own the place.
So mow the lawn and paint the wall,
And cook when friends and neighbours call.

And of course in time they’ll hang their heads,
Another piece declares you’re dead.
A choice is made you can’t revoke,
It’s down a hole or up in smoke.

One Night Stand #2
Bill Dynes Dec 2014
I found my keys still in the lock.
My underwear in the hallway.
The location of my left brown is shoe remains mystery.
I still enjoy the 'fizzing' in my blood stream.
My legs can hold me, just, amid the dental floss and ****.
You were such a clown I had a funny, funny time.
And then no inch was left un-kissed no depth not reached.
We climbed and climbed and crashed within a tangle of moist limbs.
Our meeting was important but this the next is as well.
Gotta run, gotta hurry let yourself out when you're ready.
Hey!  A rose, aw what a gesture.
I left you pancakes and some coffee.
Call me.
