Keeping things alive
Bente Holthuizen Aug 2020
Forever they had me fooled,
the fake flowers on my nightstand
Kept watering them, kept them in the sun,
Pools forming in the light sand

You’re buried too,
Not as close, it’s a fifty-mile drive
I don’t mind it though, I do it for you,
I think every time I arrive

You’ve had me fooled as well,
these flowers you can’t receive
And although these are real,
they’re just there to help me grieve

She was always so kind,
this lover of mine
Shared all her bread,
shared all her wine

She could see right through me,
past the face of despair
Saw my lingering soul,
while brushing my hair

I was never alone,
when it was just us two
But I made one mistake,
I forgot about you

You could never acknowledge,
the hospital staff
Their faces serious,
all you could was laugh

Now the lights cover me,
you by my side
You always loved me
but death was your bride

It’s getting darker,
in the sterilized room
If I can’t marry you,
the end will be my groom

Both of us together,
both of us dead
At least in the end
we can finally wed
