Oh winds
Bring snow
To blot out this day
Sweet white blanket
Covers the land
Holds me tight
Creates adventure
Over lead-paint landscape
Surreal
And oh so quiet

You think you know
But do we
Truly understand ourselves?
I am having a lot of fun with 10-word poetry and being able to express complex and sometimes painful thoughts with such small verses.
Michael Stefan Jan 2021
everyday
you're told
to wake up
get moving
pick that up
put that down
don't be late
best be early
best be quick
best be strong
go that way
stop right there
take that hill
stop that man
see that flag
tear it down
--------------
but which direction
do you run
when no one
holds the key?
can I run
if no one
told me to?
Integration is *******.  A loss of schedule and purpose is cited as the leading cause of suicide in military Veterans'.  Hug a Veteran that you know and tell them, "You march to the beat of your own drum.  Now and forever.  And I'll always be your running partner."
Why
Michael Stefan May 2020
Why
each day
of dark clouds
and gray rain
darker tidings
and cold pain
as clouds drift
on high
through sleet
and snow
and darkened sky
I clasp my head
in my hands
with wintery sigh
and wonder
through thunder
Dear Lord,
...why?
Sometimes there are too many injustices in the world to keep them from seeping in.
Michael Stefan May 2020
I stand alone,
A vagrant
Heavy is the silence
Under boughs of spruce and pine,
I bide my time.

I am the winter wolf.
Fanged lupine visage,
Perched atop-
Arctic ridgeline
With desolate winter backdrop

Muscles taught, I wait,
Noses twitch, a smell,
Ears that perk at sound,
A hunger won't be quelled

I am the winter wolf.
And I wait here for you
We all hunger for flesh,
It's true-
In one way or another;
The warmth of a lover,
The antics of a fool,
A wrath to spread to our fellows-
With howl and yell and bellow

I wait here for you
Desiring my lips
Against your warm skin
I crave for but a kiss-
But be wary of my fanged friends
Who have a darker wolven wish
I wanted to play around with an abrupt rhyme scheme in a piece that felt sensual yet dark.  Seductive but slightly violent.  A small feeling of loneliness with a gray and white backdrop.  I hope you enjoyed this piece.

Witness wonder in all forms
It's always happening around you
Michael Stefan Feb 2020
I never said you got to decide
I never really had to
You wormed your way into me
Gnawing through healthy flesh
My mind was your study
My body was your ballroom
My heart was your kitchen
You nourished as I passed away
Sometimes you're just sad and have to express yourself

He sang like a mousetrap-
But snapped like a beartrap
Heavy iron cutting,
Into a bite of truth

Never let your heart rust over-
Oxidation is defeat
Sometimes you need an anvil,
With heavy hammer
To temper your soul
Out of wrought iron
I think spiritual and mental fortitude comes from adversity and finding strength within
you
Michael Stefan May 2020
you
be it happy or sad,
filled with anger or despair,
I always think on you awhile

and I can't help but write you in
every written verse of mine-
flourished with your smile
This poem is about my daughter.  Although my poetry seems to skirt the edges of despair and madness more often than not, she is the person that gives me the courage to share these thoughts with the world.

You visited Darkness on my doorstep
A maelstrom of madness behind a cracked clown's mask
Your rictus grin cast shadows on my house guests
An upheaval of war broke out at gentile dinner party

Your heavy booted footsteps echoed in the antechamber
As you strode so confident into cacophonious dinner
Laying hands on hors d'eouvres and rotting sweet flesh
Forcing famine to descend on friendly folk

You played with the delicacy of human frailty
As you coughed with hollow wet echoes, racking paper lungs
Spreading filth and vile pox from woman to man
A sickly green pestilence wrapped tendrils around them all

And lastly, you stood before me brandishing gloved finger
You pointed at my chest and asked me, "Are you ready?"
The delight you took from all this rancor, truly sickening
You visited death upon my dining table with glee

But death won't get what it wants on this cold day
Not with heavy heeled boots of war, nor from feast to famine
Not with the pox of pestilence, no horse will drag me away
You came bearing darkness my friend,
But in a quiet valediction, I shall have to ask you to leave
Not actually sure what happened when I wrote this one.  I was feeling grumpy at fairweather friends and had recently read a graphic novel depicted the horsemen of the apocalypse in an every-day-life scenario.  I decided to blend the idea that bad friends carry these horsemen in them and will always want to share them even if everyone else is having a good time.

So quickly,
Your blade flew
Severing strings
To this world.
