Thinking Out Loud
Her mind
was a universe
of  juxtaposition...

love  hate               heaven  hell
peace    war
  passion  apathy       beauty  ugliness
fantasty reality
happiness        melancholy
freedom captivity     strength weakness
innocence and guilt

It travelled back and forth
and
sometimes
her albatross was a
perpetual quest for balance
but
other times she was certain
she wouldn't want it
any other way.

All the while, all the ****** while,
she stood there, waiting for me
to unlock the gate in the wall
But I was the fool, you see,
to think I held the key
For all the while,
the prisoner
  was me,
not she

As sight is servant to the sun
I am servant to these
Smiths and songmen
The lives bent over a desk

Working as a canvas
Daubing themselves with
Whatever ink they find
Muck or gold make marks

And I am fettered
Achain to their words
I stare into their eyes
But they reflect me

I don't believe it

Hey, what’s the story and what’s the crack?
I am white and you are black.
God made me and God made you,
Respect is what we got to do.
We cut our fingers, we bleed the same,
Different colors but different names.
We have things in common,
We like fun and games,
We run, we jump, we hop and skip,
And let no bad words pass our lips.
Because respect is what we got to do,
Respect from me and respect from you.

bones
Do you remember
that midwinter night
the one with ice
in the air
the one that
we burned
until it
turned white
that nobody
else could
stand near
do you remember
the dance of
the slender
flames as they
tortured the cold
when they
were done
you glowed
like the sun's
tongue had been
licking
your soul.
