Every birth mark
Every mole
Every scar that imprints my skin.
Every stretch mark and wrinkle
Every bold vein and pimple.
They tell the stories
of my being
and
I have earned
each and every
one of them.

The day you showed up
With eyes as bright as the sun
You taught me to love

Showed me forgiveness
When I didn't deserve it
But, my god, you did

You showed me patience
You showed me endless kindness
Showed me true friendship

You've been through so much
And still you endlessly love
With your heart of gold

I hope that someday
I can be as great a friend
As you've been to me

if only we would love
with our eyes
closed
and our hearts
open

we would not see
the outer shell

we would simply
fall in love with
the soul
the spirit
the heart
before us

for the rest
eventually falls away

It doesn't work as well.
Said the little boy, "Sometimes I drop my spoon."
Said the old man, "I do that too."
The little boy whispered, "I wet my pants."
"I do that too," laughed the little old man.
Said the little boy, "I often cry."
The old man nodded, "So do I."
"But worst of all," said the boy, "it seems
Grown-ups don't pay attention to me."
And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand.
"I know what you mean," said the little old man.
I am writing these poems
From inside a lion,
And it's rather dark in here.
So please excuse the handwriting
Which may not be too clear.
But this afternoon by the lion's cage
I'm afraid I got too near.
And I'm writing these lines
From inside a lion,
And it's rather dark in here.
