She is his Cosette

and I

his

Eponine.

A little fall of rain can

hardly hurt me now

but you can–-

you have—

my love.

–The Miserable
Any similarities/references to Les Miserables--either the musical or the novel by Victor Hugo--are purely intentional.

he closed his eyes and i wondered if
i should kiss his lips
i drew closer and closer to him
but remembered, he wasn't mine to kiss
he was just a distant dream
not for me to miss

he smiled at me and i wondered why
life could be unfair sometimes
little did we know how love hurts so much
till were finally on the spot
we love, they love-- but it's not us
and it's a cycle we can't stop.
For Marius... I hope you're happy with you're Cosette.
He sleeps. An enigma, his life bereft -
He lived then died once his angel had left.
It happened as simply as anything might,
As from day there follows the coming of night.
The poem at the end of my favourite book. Presumably co.mposed by Marius Pontmercy to honour the life of Jean Valjean. One day I hope to translate Les Miserables in full, until then, here's a very small section of it.

On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone
I walk with him till morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me

In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river's just a river
Without him
The world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life
I've only been pretending
Without me
His world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known

I love him
I love him
I love him
But only on my own
"On My Own" is a song from the hit movie Les Miserables. This song is about a girl, Eponine (Samantha Barks), who has fallen head-over-heels in love with a boy, Marius (Eddie Redmayne). Unfortunately, Marius has fallen in love with another girl, Cosette (Amanda Seyfried). Marius begs Eponine to help him find Cosette, but because she hates to see Marius unhappy, she does what she is asked to do. She sings this song out of lost love... Later in the film, she ends up taking a bullet for Marius and she dies in his arms.
