Friendships that go the distance
Make all the difference
Through lines of continuity
Lasting a lifetime.

Acquaintances come and go
They don't really know
Same team
Same office
Same school
All friendly and warm
But when you part ways
You'll never see them again.

Or there is the reminder
everyone is a hero in their own melodrama,
hurt feelings
falling outs
blocked
miscommunication
blame

Let's let'em pass

Friendships that go the distance
Seen you throughout, inside out
ugly and beautiful
Know all the idiosyncrasies
Know what to give for your birthday
Know what your all about
Willing to work it out

Friendships which go the distance
Are friends with benefits
Unconditional accepance.

Acceptance connecting
Both ways.

We can surely say,
It makes it all worthwhile
When you have friendships going the distance.
For my dearest David on his birthday, the friendship which is going the distance.

I know some folks
Some new most old
Keeping logs swirling

It’s a balancing act
Lots of plates spinning
Whoops! Stretch right!

***** fall
Plates crash
Notes fall flat

Oh! Look over there!
Thank you, magicians!
TAH-DAH!

Take a bow,
Sis, bro, boom!
You got the room!

The sound of silence.
Peace after violence.

A mother’s browbeaten servitude.
A child’s coerced gratitude.

The world’s most prosperous nations.
Architects of the most dangerous machinations.

Economies like never before;
A life that still leaves you wanting more.

The embezzlement of public finances.
The settlement of a case’s nuances.

Two colluding entities declaring each other free of ******;
With ease, starving YOUR wallet until YOU are down on your knees.

The oath: ‘to protect and serve.’
The reality? ‘To suspect and unnerve.’

A cartel that’s in charge of the guns;
Like leaving a brothel in the hands of Huns.

The lie of representation in government.
The election, expectation of endowment.

Spending your life washing your master’s feet,
Then somehow being surprised by their trickery and deceit.

The mistake of prioritising convenience.
The finalising of our own, eventual obsolescence.

We are a species that will die
Clueless of our role in it, desperately asking ‘why?’
When it’s way too late.
Trying on a new style in terms of venting vexation.

Francie Lynch
I recall the day, before she was five,
She asked to go, and play outside.
I answered, Yes, for awhile;
For I read his poem, about the road,
The travails she'll face far from home.
At our door I watched her play,
And saw the roads lead her away.

There'll be times she's on her own,
In a one-on-one, or in a throng;
In places where she won't belong;
Or find herself between right and wrong.

Yet, I untied the knot,
Dropped the tether; as a father,
I knew there'd be tools to hone,
Wits to sharpen, boards to carry,
An ax to edge on her whetstone.
There was work to be done.

If all goes well,
If I got it right,
It won't matter
Which path she roams;
She'll always know
Which lead her home.

(After Cavafy)

The sun flattens your vision
   to a wavering point.
You search for a different sun.
         There is no other.

The wind stymies your breathing
   to an asthmatic wheeze.
You search for a different wind.
         There is no other.

The sea shortens your journey
   to an anonymous port.
You search for a different sea.
          There is no other.

The sky opens its vistas,
   vast, beyond your reach.
You search for a different sky.
         There is no other.

The city blots your horizon
   with soot, smoke and ash.
You search for a different city.
         There is no other.

The day dissolves in hours
   without number or name.
You search for a different day.
         There is no other.

Beauty upholds its ideal
   like a statue without wings.
You search for a different Beauty.
         There is no other.

The word pollinates the page
   with a frail, feeble sense.
You search for a different word.
          There is no other.

The self mirrors the cosmos,
   a contracting black hole.
You search for a different self.
          There is no other.

The poem laughs at your yearning
   for Art’s Eternal Form.
You search for a different poem.
          There is no other.

So you write the same poem
   from the same shrinking self,
      with the same weakling words,
         seeking the same ideal Beauty,

On the same day after day,
    in the same ***** city,
      under the same endless sky,
         beside the same aimless sea,

Into the same stifling wind,
blinded by the same soulless sun.
And you call it a different life.
          But there is no other.

My love,
is a blackberry bramble
A control freak
Taking over everywhere
Knocking down fences
to follow the sun
to get to their destination.

Thorns with hooks and barbs
Which will slice you cut you
pierce you and not let go
if you get too close

But, along the way
Will deliver to you
the sweetest berries you'll ever know.
