I watch
as the day commences
its morning ritual.
The ocean embraces the sun's warmth
as the still blue water
eagerly turns to gold.
I look to the rising sun
for its interpretation
of my dreams.
I allow the cool water
to wash over my calloused feet.
It's reminiscent of her touch:
so soft, so gentle, so calming.
At that single moment
I feel at peace
with my place in this world.
Peace in my solitude,
my confusion,
my doubts.
But the foam crackles,
and the once reassuring wave
quickly retreats
to its powerful master.
I am left with just
two hollow footprints
on a beach that seems to
stretch into eternity.
Nothing is gained.
Nothing is lost.
All that I'm reminded of
is that
all we have in this world
are these fleeting seconds
of peace.
