Strut
niamh Jul 2015
A sea
Of nameless faces
Garbed in grey
Wired to monotony,
Like a flock
Flying in one direction,
But never toward the sun.
Painted smiles
On plastic faces
A homogenous race
Of uniformity.
Vacant expressions
And abandoned thoughts.
Then there is you.
Strut my little peacock.
Strut.

A Town Called Despair
niamh Jul 2015
A merry, mirthful clown,
I came upon a town
Where the stench of despair
Hung heavy in the air
And the ghosts within the town
Wandered aimlessly around
******* dry the joy of others
Delivered with the kiss of lovers.
No laughter can be heard
Or the trilling of the birds,
Only the silence of the tomb
In this ugly, poisonous womb,
Giving birth to fear and sorrow
With no hope of a tomorrow,
Spreading illness and infection
Eradicating all affection.
And though I long to leave,
I am granted no reprieve.
A sad and lonely clown
I cannot leave this town.
The despair of others can so easily drag you down

Nightmares
niamh Jul 2015
My eyes snap open
Wrenching me back
From the abyss.
Heart racing
And palms sweating,
A physical reaction
To imagined fear.
The realization
That it was only a nightmare
Provides meagre comfort
As the mind
Still struggles
Against what it saw
In it's own theatre.
The flashbacks
Will taint the day

Friday Feeling
niamh Jul 2015
How I have missed you.
How you smell.
How you taste.
How you feel in my hand.
How you liberate me like no other.
How you make me laugh.
How you make me cry.
How you sit with me through lonely nights and sunsets.
How you quench my desire.
Ah,
My sweet, sweet vino
Just for fun.I really do enjoy my drink :)

Strange Home
niamh Jul 2015
I walk in a wilderness
Of raw emotion
And feral thoughts
Constricting my chest
In a relentless vice
Unique calls
Echo in silence
Turning me deaf
And the shadows
Assault my eyes
Hiding in the blind spot.
My mind is *****
And my body is ravaged
The hollow knock
On an empty box
And somehow
I am home

Bite Back
niamh Jul 2015
Words are like weapons
Can maim and tear
So in the heat of the moment
You must beware.

We are not rubber *****,
We do not bounce back.
We bear the scars
Of your scathing attack.

We come back changed
Though the change may be slight,
A little bit tougher
With a little more bite.

Stow your tempered words
Within their sheath
Or taste the sharp side
Of our teeth.

Deaf Composer
niamh Jul 2015
I am a composer
of poems
and a conductor
of musings,
The words,
together
a symphony of wonder
in rehearsals,
fall flat
at showtime,
but still
they sound sweet to me.
And so I dance.

Never Alone
niamh Jul 2015
When hope is lost
And the map is torn,
When you bear the cross
And are crowned with thorns,
When the love has gone
And the tears dried out,
When your steadfast faith
Has been turned to doubt,
When your joy is done
And you smile no more,
When you long for the sun
But the rain does pour,
Know that I walk with you,
You will come to no harm.
And should you get too weary,
I will carry you in my arms

Storm ahead
niamh Jul 2015
I will not bow down
To defeat.
I storm ahead and
Won't retreat.
I am the captain
Of this fleet.

The storms may rage
Beneath my feet,
But in this race
I will compete.
I will not bow down
To defeat.

Silhouettes
niamh Jun 2015
The tree outside does dance,
Moves in such a way
That the dying light of day
Has me entranced.

Such a blissful feeling
Staring at the pirouettes
Of the branches' silhouettes
Upon my ceiling.

A colourless cascade
Of contrasting dark and light,
I could watch this scene all night
But light does fade.

Forest fires
niamh Jun 2015
The passion ignited
and the forest burned.
Old oaks charred,
saplings disintegrated,
devastation beyond
imagination,
a boundless, barren
desert of
scorched ground
and rancid air,
with the skeletons
of remembered beauty
standing sentry.
But who lit the match,
love or hate?

Shepherdless Sheep
niamh Jun 2015
Programmed to programs,
harbingers of doom,
we drink in shadow
and drown in darkness
leaving no room
for infusion of light,
dragged into
pits of despair
losing sight of
the illuminations
that surround us.
Acting like
shepherless sheep
trapped in a pen,
when the very field that we crave
is ours for the taking
if only we could take that last brave step
towards contentment

Between heaven and hell
niamh Jun 2015
He found the shape of angels
In the curvature of her body,
smelled the sweet scent of heaven
In the hollow of her neck,
Heard the harps of cherubs
In her honeyed voice
And tasted eden
On her cupid's bow.
And when her pain
Licked him like dancing flames,
He rode a wave of ecstacy
Toward a hellish nirvana.

Edible you
niamh Jun 2015
I want to bite the flesh of your words
And let the juice of your truth trickle down my throat.
I want to inhale the scent of your joy
And graze upon your sadness
I want to devour your pain
And consume your pleasure
I want to feast on all parts of you
And relish every mouthful
Until my belly can take no more

The sea and I
niamh Jun 2015
I cut a lonely figure
On a deserted shore
But the ocean and I
Have a special rapport.
In this moment
And in this space
With the spray of the sea
Stinging my face,
I felt the tension
Slip from my bones,
Slip into the water,
Into the unknown.
Her whispering waves remind me,
However far inland I be,
As long as there's breath in my body
I will feel the call of the sea.
And I whisper right back to her,
And she soothes away my fears,
Restores to me an inner peace
And makes her ocean from my tears

High winds(rensaku)
niamh Jun 2015
The howling winds rage
Bending the backs of all those
Who get in it's way

Tree limbs held aloft
In a crazed mexican wave
They yield to wind's will.

Angry waters churn
Brilliant blue to gloomy grey
Smashing upon rocks.

Watching from windows,
Spare a moment's thought for those
Who reside outside

The seed
niamh Jun 2015
The seed was planted,
A flower born,
You nurture her with tender hands
And protect her from high winds.
You don't cut her thorns,
Though they might ***** you,
Because they're part of her
You love the beauty she brings to your garden
And in turn she loves the beautiful garden wherein she grows.
Any man who plants a seed
Should be prepared to love the flower

And please look a while
Upon the face of the girl with the frozen smile.

Or do you see a lie?

Will you forget her

Or will you forever
Ask yourself why
You didnt stop for the girl wirh the frozen smile?

The glassy-eyed

Sweetness and light

Weak light filtering in
Like day old dishwater.
Hands fumble
As sleep crusted eyes
Fight the weight of recent dreams
To struggle awake.
A familiar staircase
Like a ****** terrain,
A precarious precipice.
And feet still
Slumbering in a distant place.
False light
Floods the senses,
Bringing fresh waves of pain
And Little birds chirp
Making a mockery of exhaustion.
Little birds chirping
Before morning coffee,
Suicide project
Not enough sleep!

No Mirage
niamh Jun 2015
I walked the desert for a millenia
Sandstorms crushing the air from my lungs and thieving my voice,
Drawing nails of grit down my eyes
And invading my mouth
Until I became a woman of sand.
When all hope was lost
An oasis
Before me appeared
And I drank my fill.
My lungs are fit to burst.
But I can't stop drinking.

My pen exists
Between heaven and hell
And feels the pull of both.
Swinging like an undecided compass,

It taps the page like a metronome
And I wait with bated breath.

My neverending goodbye
niamh Jun 2015
Death smiled at you and grasped your hand,
the gentle grinding of bones,
ignoring those gathered by your bed
who spoke in whispered tones.

And you, you smiled right back at death.
You did not shed a tear,
as you took your last laboured breath
death whisked you away from here.

To a place where you would feel no pain,
and your wrinkles were no more.
Where you were young and free again
and would be evermore.

And while I miss you everyday,
I would not be so brutal.
To keep you here in your broken body
would only have been cruel.

When I look upon the stars
that keep our worlds apart,
I know that you are never far.
You live on in my heart
For my sorely missed Granny.
This was quite tough to write  :(

You brought an extraordinary burst of light

In a heart unwittingly empty
You brought the knowledge
of what it is

What now (villanelle)
niamh Jun 2015
Without you by my side
all the pain comes to the fore.
There is nowhere left to hide.

All this hurt I can't abide
Life feels just like a chore
without you by my side.

As I sit by your graveside
and my heart breaks even more
there is nowhere left to hide.

For all the tears that I have cried
Joy doesn't live here anymore
without you by my side.

And so I swim against the tide
and it's you I cry out for.
There is nowhere left to hide.

In whom shall I confide?
Never questioned heretofore.
Without you by my side
There is nowhere left to hide.
First attempt at a villanelle - had to be done :)
