Colors Fade
Jessie Day Sep 2017
She grew up
in the black and white era
and her hair shows it.

Her memories are technicolor
but her photos,
monochromatic.

Were his dreamy eyes
that drove her crazy
blue or green?

What color was
that dress she wore
to her sister's wedding

It's not for us to know,
for her colors stayed
in the black and white era.

History
Jessie Day Sep 2017
A house divided
cannot stand.
Yet fifty
different states,

all men
created equally,
yet some
three-fifths a man.

They say
we learn
from history
and I really
hope that's true,

for in our history,
up to date,
we have much
learning to do.

He's off limits

Who am I
To want you so
Knowing full well
How much it would hurt her

How cruel is it
That you met her first
And the flame between you
Was extinguished so soon after

What am I to do
Unable to be with you
Yet plagued with the sense
That our hearts align perfectly

When love goes away
Jessie Day Jul 2017
I cannot tell
if this
emptiness
is relief
or just
overwhelming
sadness
Jessie Day Jul 2017
For so long
All I had
Who I was
Who I am

How do you react
When the sport you grew up on
Becomes the sport
That kills you slowly?

You (and I)
Jessie Day Jul 2017
You and I are beautiful.
You more than I,
but together,
Breathtaking.
All my life,
Being okay was the goal.
Yet with you,
I feel excellence rush through my veins.

Your excellence does not require my presence,
And you do not feel the need I feel
Because you are excellent on your own
And beautiful
And breathtaking
And above all else
You have something beautiful
With her

Too Much
Jessie Day Jul 2017
Focus
on your breathing
on swallowing
on normal

Focus
don't ruin the night
don't cry
don't be sick

Focus
you're high
you're scared
you're fine

Focus
be cool
be cool
be cool

Focus,
okay?
