Velveteen Tangerine
Cait May 2019
several snakes spiraling
hissing a message in her ear
telephone is dialing
waiting for a call from someone dear

(on the velveteen tangerine)

roller skated through the town
laces strangle each other like constrictors
gravity is upside down
the pair of skates are like twin sisters
(on the velveteen tangerine)

ivy climbing legs and boughs
stemming into leaves and flowers
time is spinning backwards now
the clock has been gone for hours
(on the velveteen tangerine)

cream and sugar sweet
share a cup of tea with company
friends talk about their week
lounging in the leafy canopy
(on the velveteen tangerine)

eyes stare at the strange sight
unattached and independently
moonlight shines on glades of green at night
trees blend into starry scenery
(on the velveteen tangerine)

citrus spheres hang from tree limbs
peel the hard rind to make it nice
pick one or a dozen at your whim
drink sweet juice or swallow a slice
(on the velveteen tangerine)

beware of seeds and centipedes
but take a chance and you will dance
with delight around midnight
on the velveteen tangerine

She is a Star
Cait May 2019
She is a star.
Not just the kind on Broadway,
But a literal star, burning bright,
Flames that lick the faces of each one who passes,
She is a star.

She is a star,
It seems to others like she steals the light,
But in reality she steals the darkness.
Her rays touch every body and particle, every dark corner.
She is a star.

She is a star,
Brilliant golden necklaces lace her skin,
Not because she thinks people like them,
But because she does. Confidence flows from every pore.
She is a star.

She is a star,
Skin tanned by her own radiance,
Freckles dance upon her cheeks.
Rosy lips, face flushes with love, not embarrassment.
She is a star.

She is a star,
She floats alone but not lonely,
Out in space because the world cannot take her power,
But she warms me right up anyways.
She is a star.

Human Beings
Cait May 2019
Human beings
Have a unique tendency
To not appreciate their amazing bodies.
To not believe in themselves.
To have such an incredibly low amount
Of self esteem
To the point where they contemplate
Ending
Their lives.
They think that nobody will care
Nobody will notice
If they don't wake up the next day.
They may think of jumping.
Falling.
Speeding through the air
Like a tossed quarter or dime or penny
Into a fountain.
They think that they are only worth
That single penny
That flew through the air
And sank
And hit the bottom of the fountain.
They flicked that quarter or dime or penny
And they made a wish.
A wish that they wouldn't have to
“Deal with it”
Anymore,
A wish that they
Would not
Wake up tomorrow.
But they may not be aware
Of what lies before them.
When they open their eyes in the morning
Their whole life is still ahead of them.
Chances,
Opportunities,
Little moments
That mean the world.
For some reason,
They don't believe
That the future holds these precious moments
They don't believe
That their loved ones
Love them back just as much.
I'm telling them...
I'm telling you,
That I believe.
I believe in you.

An invisible jail called silence.
Ensnaring so many prisoners.
A literal soundproof room.
Millions scream, nobody hears.
An invisible cell called silence.
A cellophane shell called silence.
Some people are given a megaphone
when they don’t even deserve one.
In a glass case, some are displayed,
But nobody listens anyways.
Is there a locksmith anywhere?
Can you help us?
An invisible jail called silence.
Even if a person seems free,
Their own skull is a cage for the brain.
Transparent shackles, a translucent gag tied around the mouth.
People stuck in their individual cages.
An invisible cell called silence.
Today I'm breaking out. I'm breaking loose.
I’m breaking the glass ceiling, breaking the fourth wall.
I found the key, I'm breaking free
From this invisible cell called silence.
