Mr Shankley
I kissed a girl with a broken smile;
nothing could come near.
She carved it with a pocket knife;
slit from ear to ear.
And she wears it like her favourite scarf;
it keeps her from the cold.
So I told her its only woven by
her enemies of old.

We often think strangers have,
The upper hand in crafting our pain,
We believe they feel no remorse,
For their cruel deeds.
But most times,
It’s the ones closest to us,
Who recklessly hurt us,
Without feeling any guilt.

We squander our health in our pursuit of wealth,
We starve and overwork ourselves,
In hopes, it all leads to a better life,
Only for us to splurge our newfound wealth,
To seek the health we once had.

Be wary of them,
Be wary of their cunning ways,
Don’t be fooled by their cheerful deposition,
Cause behind all those facades,
Lies a cruel heart.

At one glance, you might miss it
As they have a way of luring you in,
So much so that your instincts may fail you,
But fear not, as time will eventually tell.

In time, it will all be crystal clear,
In good time, you shall see
For everything eventually reveals itself.

It first saw you when you were young,
The moment it laid eyes on you,
You felt a great sense of comfort,
That you had never felt before,
Although its aura gave you a sense of danger,
You were compelled by the vision it entailed.

Miraculously so, you were willing to submit your devotion to it,
But little did you know, what was ahead of you
Nothing could prepare your young mind,
For the impediment, it had designed for you,
The hours of self-doubt, rejections and loneliness.

These moments will bring you to your knees and ponder,
“Is this what dreams are made of?”
But each time you fall, you will dust yourself off,
And remember that these bits are what makes life worthwhile.

Often, we spend our time
Looking for something
To fill the void within us,
And we turn a blind eye
To what really matters,
But we fail to realize that
What we really needed
Was right there all along.
