The first time I saw her
shivering from the rain
I knew
she was the one

Her perm flattened
her lipstick smudged
and still
her beauty reigned

As she sat before me
cigarette in hand
I asked
you want a light?

The spark ignited
glistening blue eyes
shining
through clouds of smoke

Her humor was dry
as the ten-cent toast
her smile
as smooth as the brew

We talked about war
wishing it would end
with hopes
our boys would win

I swallowed my fears
forced a tiny smile
I knew
I'd never see her again

I want to stumble on
the sand

Crushing castles

As my feet meet the
shattered remains of
bonfires

Slicing and dicing

Stinging from the
salty sea

At least then I’d know
I'm awake.

Cherries taste succulently sweet,
wet with morning mist

Beckoning boys in summer's heat,
hoping they’ll be picked

Cherries gleam ripe ruby red,
when growing wild and free

Dreaming to whom they will be fed,
a cherry’s jubilee.

Wallflowers
drifting through walls
wilted
rotting family trees
like fungi feasting
on buried roots

to grieve a loss
and fight regret,
that’s what mourning is for.

to start anew
but not forget,
that’s what morning is for.

remember
when music was
pure & uncut,
when we were all users
trying to survive?

addicted to
the crack-le of
the needle
as it hit the 45?

back when the
natural high of
heart & soul
was enough to suffice?

we’re just
some junkies
looking to score

excuse me mister,
could you spare a dime?

Jim and Mary Jane
down on lover’s lane
too old to refrain
too young to feel afraid
till blood and bone remain
in rays of moonlight

I followed a rainbow
to its *** of gold
but found
I had grown too old

hopefuls
stay afloat
in paper boats
bleeding ink
as they sink
in a sea of stars

I thought
I left you behind
the last time you came
to take me

and yet
I hear you
pounding
inside my mind

come place your hand
in mine

I swear
I left you behind
and yet
I hear you pounding
                           pounding
                                    pounding

alright

I let you inside
now darkness comes
in the daylight
and you're
just too dark
to fight

I hate
I let you inside
because
I had the key

and yet
you got the best of me

Walking by a wedding
as the cherry blossoms sway
in the quiet afternoon
of a dawning summer’s day

Walking by a wedding
what a sparkle in her eye
with the prettiest bouquet
I must say
what a picture-perfect wedding
I’m passing by

Walking by a wedding
as the gentle music starts
see them gliding down the aisle
with smiles
so joyous they shatter my heart

Walking by a wedding
hear the promises bestowed
glad he has found someone new
but who knew
when he asked, that I’d say no?

So,

I’m walking by a wedding
as my dreams are led astray
in the quiet afternoon
of a dawning summer’s day

Standing there and waiting
what a sparkle in my eye
in the whitest winter dress
bated breath,
what a picture-perfect wedding
has passed me by
