City WITHOUT houses
Cars WITHOUT complaint
People WITHOUT patience
Buildings WITHOUT paint
Portland ISN'T pretty
NO ONE likes it here
LOST its charm already
That's why they all DRINK beer

THE EXCUSE USED WAS THAT I HAD
WRITER'S BLOCK.

UNTIL I STARTED BEING HONEST
WITH MYSELF,

AND ADMITTED I WAS TERRIFIED
OF CREATING SOMETHING THAT
PEOPLE WOULDN'T LIKE.

I WAS TERRIFIED OF NOT BEING ENOUGH,

EVEN FOR MYSELF.

Gathered around the fireless pit,
The birds rejoicing to the songs;
Of easing melodies and mellow winds - no one sings along.

Tranquil, spontaneous and dynamic
is this place - we are pondering like Owls;
I wish I could sing aloud and be free, but I just sit there afoul.

Right now, a witness I am, of the ever repeating ever progressing world,
Right now, peoples’ different definitions clash in a heavy sticky stew a-broiled; but

Right now, people are looking left, many more looking right,
Right now, the pendulum is walking back - this election is up for a fight.

Right now, the people are like crops waiting for the harvest,
Right now, the farmers are making their “witty” and impulsive agendas they claim are harmless.

Right now, America has no unity - until “POW!” - we are attacked;
Right now, I wish we could fight off our extreme, utmost, and bombarding differences

Right now. To come together. Our woes, sorrows gone.
Right now, achieve safety, happiness for all, and exclusion for none.

I wish you were here to ease the tension in my stomach
And kiss away my headache
But every word you say to me is as sweet as potatoes and molasses
And just by looking at a picture of you -
I feel all else evaporate
And I know
It never has to come back

Nothing, but a checklist, is a life
Full of tasks people race to complete.
They look straight ahead, and never turn back;
To them, the future is a new frontier
Waiting to be explored until they’re done, but
Everyday is like an assignment they finish,
They wake up to go to sleep;
Checking off their lists with their retired old pens,
They want to do it over again;
Life will always be a checklist.

He loved with the cruelty of nature
growing like ivy on my heart;
I'd cut him away but he'd only return

He nestled in my branches
making a home out of my rotting shell,
forgetting home is where the heart is

He said "destruction was a form of beauty"
So he pretended to be reborn a hurricane
Firing open doors better left closed in his wake

At times, it was better to hide from him
Wait out the storm and pretend
everything was perfectly alright

Then when it was all over
He'd kiss my wounds,
grow flowers from my dying veins

But not so long after they would wilt
because even the sweetest of things
couldn't survive within our own toxicity.

blunted on the riptide of fury:
i am not your resolution
i am not your answer
i am your destruction
and your absolute contrary;

but i will seep into your system like a cure
because i am connivance
yet not quite compliance
and i'm not inwardly pure
because i am a cancer

and a swan-like dancer
dancing my way into you;

taking a twice-trodden path
i am
your lasting and indelible wrath
i am red vision tinted with blue

i am you
*i am you
