The Awakening
B H H Burns Jun 2017
Petal lips blossom
Around a red rosebud -
A flushed flower unfurling,
Dewy with desire,
Intoxicating the air
With the sweetness of its scent

Lost Property
B H H Burns Jun 2017
I am not lost property,
And I never was
So you have no cause
To lay your claim
On me.

I am not your property,
And I never was, so now
We're divorced, you must
Allow yourself to see,
That I'm not lost now,
I'm just

Free.

Patchwork Girl
B H H Burns Jun 2017
Her seemingly seamless surface
Is sewn together by her scars;
Those lost, lonely highways
That she knows lead nowhere fast.
She’s a patchwork of reflections,
A mirrored maze of emotions –
Of eyes opened wide to
Every side that must be seen.
She’s a collage
Of her calamities,
A tableau
Of her torments,
She’s an everyday eccentric
But even so, she don’t resent it,
Because she knows once she accepts it
Then she’ll finally be free.

Hedonism's Aftermath
B H H Burns Jun 2017
Dead-end neuron streets, filled with
Banks of burnt-out brain cells.
Smashed, streetlamp synapses hide
The the homes where ideas dwelt.
But the drugs have now departed in
An exodus of ecstasy, a
Mass-migration of memories
That left nothing but
These empty streets,
And broken, bulldozed dreams…

Cunning Patience
B H H Burns Jun 2017
You bide your time
To hide your crimes;

Never strike in
Broad daylight and

Always attack
At the back, so

None will realize the length
Of your lies, for
Even you can’t
See through them…

But I do.

Resilience
B H H Burns May 2017
She moves in the midst of their maelstrom
With the calm serenity of space;
Unfathomable
Uncontrollable
And unrestrained,
Her mind dissolves their cloying chaos, then
Her soul transforms it into poetry.

The Mind's Garden
B H H Burns May 2017
Sweep away the dead leaves,
Tear down
The brittle vines of misery,
Bring forth light
Into forgotten corners,
And let the fountain of your thoughts
Play its merry melody once more.

Restore and repair
All the broken panes of your
Hothouse imagination;
Fill it full of lush concepts
And juicy, bright ideas.

Tend to your mind’s garden daily;
Feed it with curiosity,
Water it with inspiration,
Warm it with love,
Then you will feel it
Grow and flourish
Forevermore.

What Lies Beyond Depression
B H H Burns May 2017
Tightly-wrapped thoughts only fester away
So unravel your mind’s bindings ’til they all fall away,
Open your soul to this curious world,
Let its beauty infuse you, as your body unfurls.

Let your eyes hear every sound your ears see,
Let your skin taste the sweetness of infinity,
Spread your perception out far and wide, then
Take a deep breath, and draw the universe inside.

You drink the sunlight that falls from the sky,
You breathe the air that gives everything life,
Your blood flows like rivers, and your flesh soft as earth
Your form and its functions all give your soul worth.

For nothing exists in all time and space
Without having reason, and purpose, and place, as
You are important, like all that you do –
For you are the universe, and
The universe
Is
You.
I wrote this to remind myself that, no matter what my depression might tell me, I have a place in the world, something I hope other people may feel to when they read it.

Dodging A Black Hole
B H H Burns May 2017
I dodged a black hole,
Took a spin
'Round its event horizon,
Then
Regained Control.

Now I'm floating out in space,
The pull of it still lingers
But
I'm in a good place,
Safe from its embrace
And gladly giving it the finger.
This poem describes how I feel following a bout of depression

Since Becoming Me
B H H Burns May 2017
It's strange,
Sublime and
Surprising
But
Since becoming me,
All the things I truly believed
I
Wasn't allowed to do
Wasn't allowed to feel
Wasn't allowed to be,
Are now the things
I
Proudly put on view
Pure and unconcealed
For all the world to see.

Roll Up, Roll Up
B H H Burns May 2017
Love can be a:
Roller coaster
Hall of mirrors
Helter-skelter
Ferris wheel
Fun house
House of horrors
Dodgem track
Or ghost train

But

You can't tell 'til the ride's begun
And you can't leave 'til you've had your fun

So roll up, roll up...

Youth
B H H Burns May 2017
Remember when...
Our young skin shone diamond bright
In dark caverns of black light;
Out of space and riding time,
Fast break beats but faster minds,
Chasing, racing laser light...

Remember when...
Bass lines boomed like mushroom clouds
Radiating through the crowds,
Hands held out to neon suns,
You were me as we come one,
And beside us we stood proud...

Remember when...
We were such sublime sights,
Flesh and muscle, firm and tight
Fearless, feral hearts beating
And loose, limber limbs weaving
On and on into the night...

Expanding Horizons
B H H Burns May 2017
Let your feet take your mind for a wander,
So your eyes can get a good gander,
At sights they may not have seen,
So when you return to your screen,
Your head will be filled with insight,
And your hands will be itching to write.

Has finished feasting

Love's Wounds
B H H Burns May 2017
After a break-up
It takes time to mend
If you rebound too quickly
Your heart gets the bends.

And don't be ashamed
To face life on your own
For love's wounds will heal quickly
If you leave them alone.

Limericks
B H H Burns May 2017
There once was a young man from Chile
Who was exceedingly silly
One day for a dare
He ran round the town square
With just a pink bow on his *****.

There was a young man from Peru
Who was terribly fond of U2
He wanted to see them
Play Rome's Coliseum
But the curve of the Earth spoiled his view.
B H H Burns May 2017
In hindsight, her veneers
Were not the best idea,
And nor did Botox help;
It turned her howls to yelps.

Her pretty, patterned claws
Looked weird on canine paws,
Just like her enhanced *******
Beneath her furry chest.

Too late, she realized
Her need to be disguised
Was pointless all along;
She knew now she'd been wrong...

The City's Song
B H H Burns May 2017
Hear the calming sound of distant traffic,
The morning yawn of this slumbering town,
There, the early birds fly fast and frantic,
Here, the songbirds strive to rouse the crowds.

Soon voices merge with this morning chorus,
As fledglings fly free from their parent's nests,
Filled with the thrill of the day before them,
Wild screams and laughter burst out from their *******.

The clanging of gates cuts short the chorus,
The parents depart to tend to their nests,
Then little birds flit through playground forests,
'Til afternoon comes, then fly home to rest.

Hear the calming sound of distant traffic,
The twilight sigh of this tired-out town,
Night owls with bright eyes swoop through the darkness,
As songbirds sing lullabies all around.

The Co-Dependent Concept
B H H Burns May 2017
Misery loves Company
But the feeling isn’t mutual;
For Company wants just to be
With concepts which are social.

So Company spurns Misery
Which suits Misery just fine;
As Misery has cause to be
Friends with Anguish all the time.
