you're sneaky, i'll give you that.

just when i wasn't looking

YOU

snuck into my ribcage

infiltrated the walls of cartilage

(and distrust)

and you stole it.

ripped it from the tangles of veins (and anger) and arteries (and fear)

and left me with nothing but hollow awe.

it's fine, you keep it.

Bad Luck
I scream to drown the noise,
And fight to hold my poise
Against this sonic wave
            That dismantles and destroys.

This place that I called home…
It’s all that’s left of what I own.
I fear I’m destined to the desert,
           Or somewhere desolate to roam.

Tried to convince my brain this wasn’t real –
That lies are all I feel.
I’m not sure why I fear this noise;
There’s nothing left for it to steal.

                        -         -         -

Yet, I plug my ears and scream;
Tear the stitching from my seams . . .
I find it difficult to sleep,
         And near-impossible to dream.
I scream so hard it makes me sweat,
And my skin begins to gleam

This heat turns smiles into tears,
                         Like water into steam

My head begins to ache.
My hands begin to shake.
If I chose the wrong path,
I made one hell of a mistake.
While my lungs still permit,
I’ll keep their volume set on high,
Lifting my head to the clouds,
             To scream at the sky.

I have yet to hear an answer,
And while I’m not much of dancer
I learned some steps from Lady Luck
In hopes to cure me of this cancer.

                        -         -         -

Now, I don’t believe in luck –
But she still left me with something . . .
While we danced I took notice;
The noise dulled slightly to a humming.

I looked back to Lady Luck
– and I’m sure this wasn’t just a dream –
But she had vanished to the air,

                             Like water into steam.

I said “I don’t believe in luck.”
She still left me something, though.

She said:
“You can’t predict the world –
I assume this much you know…
But if a farmer plants a seed,
In that spot, a plant will grow.”

One day, my throat gave out.
For no longer, could I shout.
And I don’t believe in luck,
So I was simply left with doubt.

I cursed that lady’s words.
I told myself that she was crazy.
       When something caught my eye…
There - at my feet - grew a daisy.
A daisy… In the desert…
So despite how bad my head hurt,
I thanked God for Lady Luck.
I thanked God that I had met her.

The noise I heard was her opposite.
It was the presence of chance.

I've learned the farmer can’t predict the world,
But, as surely as seeds grow into plants . . .
My only choices are my actions.
So, I think I’ll take today to dance.

Thoughts in time and out of season
The Hitchhiker stood by the side of the road
And leveled his thumb
In the calm calculus of reason.

Hi. How you doin’?

I just got back into town,

L.A.

I was out in the desert for awhile

“Riders on the storm”

Yeah. In the middle of it

“Riders on the storm”

Right…

“Into this world we’re born”

Hey, listen, man, I really got a problem

“Into this world we’re thrown”

When I was out on the desert, ya know

“Like a dog without a bone
An actor out on loan”

I don’t know how to tell you

“Riders on the storm”

but, ah, I killed somebody

“There’s a killer on the road”

No…

“His brain is squirming like a toad”

It’s no big deal, ya know

I don’t think anybody will find out about it, but…

“take a long holiday”

just, ah…

“Let your children play”

this guy gave me a ride, and ah…

“If you give this man a ride”

started giving me a lot of trouble

“Sweet family will die”

and I just couldn’t take it, ya know

“Killer on the road”

And I wasted him

Yeah.

Once I dreamt
The sky was blue and deep
And dragonflies circle
I saw you lie back on a
Green patch of grass
I mean/ there was so much light about you
a circle around you of unbroken golden light
Your features were hand drawn
Shadows vignette And the sun looked +
On your skin

Laughter
Thick white clouds of your laughter
Leak from the sides of your lips
You clap your hands along with the thunder
Imitating the lightning upon my heart
Leap
words of fire burnt into my skin

You stand in the middle of  the river
                     7
        Stags drink from your eyes
Lighting bugs and bees circle your marble fingertips
……………………………………………………………………………..............
I invite you to the garden
To see the statues
Swallowed by grasping hands of ivy that glow golden in the morning dew
Ask me to carry your sorrow.
Mingle blood with me beneath the full moon
The Golden circlet of your soul
The ecstasy of birdsong at first kiss
We dream as one
She and I
Suns and moons twist about us
The stars gentle culling us to join
In dance and song
We dream as one she and I
The sun
The River
The Grass
The Sky
Our son she holds upon her hip
A sweet song falling
From her lips
Summer June
A garden swing
My heart soars
On golden wing
‘Til autumn sigh
We dream as one she and I

Dying days
I'm looking for a way out
Feelin' like a ghost
Itching for an overdose
Action
Reaction
Action
Reaction
Strike the match
Hijack a limousine
Dying for a taste
High octane gasoline
Action
Reaction
**** satisfaction
Read my lips
Nothin' to live for
But the eight ball
Nothin' to live for
Gonna burn it all
Dog bite
Distraction
No satisfaction
Stayin' numb

"The cancer wrapped around her larynx
Strangling her to death"
Anything I say would only hurt
Sweetie fills our cups with fresh black
Coffee for the tenth time with nothing
To add but a smile.
I light one of his cigarettes and
He empties ten million packets of sugar
Substitute into his cup

I am silent
Staring at the salt shaker
Imagining how death comes
It is cold and alien
A fragile being caught inexplicably in this
Instant of life I so tightly grasp

Salt shakers and the fake wooden tables
He talks about cancer as if it were everywhere
It swims in the bottom of the coffee cups
Beneath our feet in the ugly aqua green carpet
Flaked by orange triangles and diamonds

It watches us from a bench outside
Out by the empty road
Beneath the lonesome streetlights

I am now slightly older than I was a while ago
and I have a question I need answered in my life before I go
can anybody tell me exactly what "it" is
can you tell me where to find "it", can I lose "it" with a kiss

I hear tell of some parents screaming when they learn "it"'s lost
I don't know just what "it" looks like, or exactly what "it" cost
But, to hear the parents yelling, "it" must really cost a lot
Can anybody tell me, is "it" something that I've got?

I hear movie stars all have "it", musicians have "it" too
Nobody can explain "it", or exactly what "it" do
I went looking for"it" last week, thought I had "it", but did not
I got arrested trying to buy "it", in the end I did not

My wife says someone has "it", and I look and I don't see
She shows me people who have lost "it", and it's all the same to me
I don't have "it", can not find "it", wouldn't want "it", too much fuss
I told someone at the Legion, she said she lost "it" on the bus

Now, that made it more confusing, It made my head just spin
She sat there and she told me, behind a wicked little grin
She said she had "it", and she lost "it", in fact she gave "it" away
I asked her, if "it" was worth "it",  she said "it" really made her day

So, I sit here with my question, can you tell me what "it" is?
I just don't understand "it", is there something that I missed?
I see people I'm told have "it", but I can't tell from afar
And I've met people, who have lost "it", gave " it " up in their Dad's car

My wife says that I have 'it", I smile as if I really know
So I tell her that she has "it" too, even though " it" doesn't show
I ask her if she wants  one more, she just smiles and nods her head
She tell me, "You've still got "it", and then she leads me off to bed...."

I'm so confused....
