There was a fire in the water..
On the mirror lake..
It was a reflection..
It was the only time the fire could make love to the water..
Without ever burning or dowsing one another..
Just a beautiful reflection of an impossible releationship..
Fire by the lake..

Nine years and still
we cradle our grief
carefully close,
like groceries
in paper bags.

Eventually the milk
will make its way
into the refrigerator;
the canned goods
will find their home
on pantry shelves.

Most things find
their proper place.

Eventually the hummingbirds
will ricochet against scorched air,
their delicate beaks stabbing
like needles into the feeder filled
with red nectar on the back porch.

Eventually our child
will make her way
back to us. Perhaps.

But I’ve heard
that shooting
****** feels
like being
buried under
an avalanche
of cotton *****.

For now it’s another
week, another month,
another trip to Safeway.

We drive home and wonder
why it is always snowing.
Behind a curtain of snow,
brake lights pulse, turning
the color of cotton candy,
dissolving into ghosts.

And with each turn,
the groceries shift
in the seat behind us.
From the spot where
our daughter used to sit,
there is a rustling sound—

a murmur of words
crossed off yet another list,
a language we’ve budgeted
for but cannot afford to hear.

Sometimes it's hard to understand
The sacred fragility of this land
It is far beyond the hands of man
Spilling through fingers eternally like sand
The oceans kiss the blushing shores
Forever and ever are sunsets to adore
And floating off the horizon's shine
Is a decadent island of filth and grime
On this island no one can survive
But still it stands, lackluster and bright
It's creators turn and shield their eyes
Out of sight is out of mind
Please recycle

I want you to bury my heart along with my hands
So I cannot grasp your skin with every empty throb and beat.
Picture me with you
Picture us. For at least one last time
I am with you.

If I never fall in love again,
Give me your eyes,
The gift of sight to see what you worship. To adore
the footsteps you take further and further away from me.
It would take too long for me to forget. You
Whose prayers I’ve been repeating for too long.

If I never fall in love again,
Break me one last time
Leave crevices for me to find. Pieces of you
Still hurting and healing. I am
Not going to walk away.

When I fall in love again,
Allow me to do dance with you one last time.
Melancholy is inching its way through.
If I fall in love again,
Let it not be with you.

My poetic senses will grow stale
The words escaping me each and every time
For I know what it’s like
To be immortalized
In love and heartbreak
To be worshiped
In song and in ode
To be penned
Too many times until you lose all meaning
This is not you
You are not ideal
You are as surreal as hurt
We are as casual as fiction
I will not romanticize you to the point of lucidity
And the tides will not turn when you arrive
The stars will not fall when you leave
The world will not stop for us
The words of love will not come
All because I will not love you like a writer

The universe in a cup,
Raise it to your lip,
Sing a note of silence,
Then take a timeless sip.
As a theophile, tea is an important part of my life; with each sip of good tea feeling timeless.
