I've heard that sitting in silence is peaceful and relaxing.

All I can hear are her screams of regret.

when my son was younger
he asked -

how old are the mountains
from where did the First People come
why does the sun sleep in the ocean
what is the color of rain

now that my son is older
stronger, wiser and bolder
he asks -

how old are the mountains...
...what is the color of rain

some things don't change.

I take cold showers because
they're supposed to help
To cure depression
They don't
I just shiver
Like I do
When I'm depressed

Breathe.

Settle yourself.

Try to understand.

We were meant to love.

And if we can not love, then we were meant to try to love.

And failing that we were made to breathe.

And try again.

This is the product of an exercise. I was instructed to grab the 7th book on my shelf, turn to page 7, and use the 7th line as my first line. The poem was restricted to seven lines.

The Quiet Poet
For 281 days
I have been stuck here.

For 281 days
They tried to "heal me"
through various pills
therapy sessions
shots
weird drinks
and anything else
that comes straight from hell.

For 281 days
I have been cornered
between these white walls.
Trapped in these small rooms
that reek of ***** ***** and bleach.

For 281 days
The people in the white coats
would ambush me
with treatments and remedies.

For 281 days
the lady with the red hair
would come in
and force me to take my yellow pill.
Yellow pill
3 times a day
everyday
for 281 days.

For 281 days
I tried to convince
the people in the white coats
that I'm not crazy.

281 days is enough
I will not let this number get to 282.
