Better
Jeffrey Pua Oct 2014
Beyond my I love you lies
An I love you too,
Or sad poetry.
I write what I cannot have
Or what I cannot keep.

I go from loving to losing you
And both. I go from pain to
Odd pain then to forgetting,
And beyond that-
Pain even. But hope
Is always there.

The sun sets, not for the moon
But for tomorrow; Love leaves
Not for pain, but for love.
Pain never leaves.
Love always comes back.
Love comes back better.
Pain disintegrates.

Beyond sad poetry
Is romantic poetry.
Beyond poetry is reality.
Beyond everything else,
Good and bad,
Is you.

And You are far better...
...than an I love you too.

To Live
Jeffrey Pua Oct 2014
If I were to die,
If this life be remembered
Like diminutive things
You unknowingly admire,

If little by little, you will go
Leaning towards me,
In which once
You were too hesitant,

If I mattered in this instant, just now,
If I, in this time, a very token from me,
And you see me fit for remembering,

If I were to depart, love, if I were to,
Then see me fretful,
That the things which I cannot hold on,
Might smile on,
And me leaving.

If I were to die love, if I were to,
And you'd just come to me, I am alive.
It is because no matter how old
Or ageless time is,
It would be as if
It was only born today:
If I have you, I have forever.

You are an inkling of life to hold on to.
Be it for love or not that you inch yourself close
For reaching, just for reaching.
I would be, would seemingly be,
Like a night without its fireworks
And you
A love song.

To Promise
Jeffrey Pua Oct 2014
Lower down the silly guard
Of your charisma,
Let your ears reveal the pull
Your smile creates
In certain corners
Of this sanity,
And let me love...
...You.

I would vow to keep your hands
In mine forever.
I know none of stars
That shine tonight
As brighter than this love- its eyes.
Much better,
Let me love...
...You.

Feel the rush, the icy blue
Of this perfection.
You won't have to stay in slumber.
Let me lower down a shoe.
Let me feel the hair you grew for me.
And you will take me in, a beast.
I promise,
I will love...
...You.

Now.

Let me love...
...You.
Now.

To Dream
Jeffrey Pua Sep 2014
Show me the soles of your heart,
And we will run,
Together, to the acres
Of matrimony,
Where we are souls
In our very first forever.

We will nod the nod of love,
As one, as yes
As we could ever be.
We will know how flowers
Keep memories.
We will know why I love you.

You will show me how to dream,
Your true self.
You would be nearer than what I thought
You could ever be. You will dizzy me
With curious stars.

Now this is our far, far away,
Amusing, existing:
A hand on your hand,
Two pairs of lip, perfected,
Entwined.

To Believe
Jeffrey Pua Sep 2014
And even though it doesn't want to,
The moon sees itself in the river,
The light, the shadows that it cannot touch,
The borders of your Neverland,
That grand open garland, your waist
That tickles past imaginations.

The night air, as Eve was,
Had nothing to wear.
Frantic, it covers itself
With your hair,
Perfumed, it laughs at itself,
Sharing its first fruit.
I, a human, am staring
At the very breath of God.

Forget the wind, the moon,
The river, the old, old
Stars hung as jealousy.
I have a mustard seed of love.
And I need only to believe you.

Final Form
Jeffrey Pua Sep 2014
I have enveloped you with my dying hands
And everything that might bring you here
From some place in my dreams.

Death would be a cruel death
If I have none to hold, my love.
Truly, my heart still seeks for you:

You, my dearest,
My pain, my breath;
The song that carries me to a long lost echo;
The echo that appears to be my nightsong,
Must curse me:

To bring old painful truth
On lasting new memories,
To bind forgotten lips
On long-forgotten lips,
And to have you--
Though not having you-

Gifted to be as loving as angels,
Gifted to just roam the earth
Without a face,
Or flesh--

Taking the final form...
...of pure love.

For When We Kiss
Jeffrey Pua Sep 2014
The potential quarrel only,
And I say only, is the thought
That 'us' would not be us
After our kisses.

We will never be just one flame,
One firebird in the distance
Pecking at mimosas.
And there's just too much flaw
If we are perfect for each other.

I could be the day of our starts,
And you, the day that begins.
I don't know.
You tend to over-think,
And often, I think of you,
Etcetera,
Vice versa.

So one by one, we secretly seek
Each other's secret;
One by one, we hate
How we hated each other
Till other things remain
In other things.

And so we think of each other
Only,
And then we kiss.
And I say:

Let love be a kiss,
For when two people kiss, it never mattered
Who stoops or reaches more.

One Smile
Jeffrey Pua Sep 2014
It is when I remember your smile
That I remember to smile.
Not smiling outwardly,
But having that hope
Of days brighter,
Now that you have come my way.

I have come a long way from sad
To not-sad, only to be drifted here,
Seeing you,
Once,
And then not having to see you again,
But still end up happy,
And definitely
Wanting to be happier.

It is when your lips part and un-part;
It is when your eyes blink and un-blink,
That a man focuses
And be out-of-focus at the same time.
I have forgotten to pay my fare.
I have forgotten to get your number.

It is when a man writes this thing down
Right away, impulsive.
It is when a poem is not as beautiful
As to whom it is pertained to.
It is when a man writes something down
On a receipt.

I better keep a frown ready,
When I am down,
That I may be reminded
Of that gift you have.
And then I’d smile.

This is when a man makes you matter.
This is when a smile is both inside and out.
This is when you smile me out of lonely.
This is when you smile me in
To the very Word of God.

And now
This one smile
Has two smiles
To smile about.

Now I go,
Straightforward,
Saying:
You had…
…the sweetest smile.

Seriously
Jeffrey Pua Sep 2014
Funny,
It is when we find love
That we start to search for it.

Funny,
Some say that love is blind
Yet, it always seems to find us.

Funny,
You’ve always been with me,
And it is only now that I’ve found you.

Seriously,
I have now found
True love.

Mindful
Jeffrey Pua Nov 2012
From lovers’ stare to lovers’ glance, we go.
We danced only by taking these ranging steps.
And it was I who was forgotten.

The front door opens and I think of you.
The window is lonely
That it opens and I think of you.
And I think of your goodbye.

The wind bears the voice of you.
The sad night trails it off.
You tread so slowly,
Star by star.
Night by night, I have kissed you
Over and over.

It will always be this one train hurrying itself,
This passenger waiting,
Like they should have to meet,
But then they won’t.

It will have to be a chair,
Unmoved,
And you’d come home early,
Finding your bed.
There, lies the space I left.

And this is me measuring my love:
My love remembers,
It would be the last to die of me.

And in this story, love,
I am the sole stranger.
And I have forgotten you only,
When forgetting allows me so.

Is My Heart...
Jeffrey Pua Jun 2012
...the sorriest thing
When you left me
For leaving you so long,
Or was it yours?

If it is mine,
Then leave it broken.
Leave it broken.

But if it’s yours,
Then let me say to you,
At least,
That I am sorry, uncertain
Of your return.

And then tell
Your close friends
That it was me
Who begged for you
To stay.

Dear Blue
Jeffrey Pua Jun 2012
Imagine me, love,
Lost in the ceiling of the ocean,
Afloat to where my wishes are,
Ever hopeful.

Tell me, will you...
Will you imagine for me
That boat, my loving rescue?
Or will you bring your moving isles
Back to carry me?

Will you, like the rain, bring me rainbows?
Or will you, like the rain, bring me tears?
Dearest, like the Sun that finds his home,
Or a jewel tossed to slowly drown,
I'll bask in you,
And always will, for you.

Imagine me, love,
Wandering,
Fishing for your deep heart.
My nets, tired,
Thinking of your breath.
And the moon swims already.
Now ask me:
Can my true love wait?

Love, imagine me,
Your navel, my head,
All that touched each other,
And all that kissed before they sleep.

Love, remember me,
Like this,
Like a prayer,
For this
Is the only way...
...we'll be the same.

Nights Are Like This
Jeffrey Pua Jun 2012
I adore the evening still,
Though not as dark as it used to,
Nor as dark as her eyes.
I guess...the shadow of the world has forgotten me.
And I have no stars for her.

Well, she's asleep now.
Novels, stuck in her favorite pages.
Her bed longs for her sweet weight just as I.
And the weak rain outside was a long-playing record.

The playful wind dodges her hair,
As if to search for new strength
In the coming dawn of her waking.
And my hesitant arms drifted elsewhere with them,
To look for the finest of roses,
So that in the morning she may be reminded
Of the touches I long to give.

Such is the beauty of this night-
Somewhere she's asleep and somehow
I think of her.

And so,
I am writing these verses now,
Before I end them...
...with 'I love her'.

Just Let Me
Jeffrey Pua Jun 2012
I know you too well.
I know your disregard for me,
For everything
About me.

I know the face of the ocean.
I know your waist that turns you.
I know the magic of your laughter
That heaps upon me,
Upon the shadow of me the Sun abandons.
I harbor all of your beauty that are unowned
And my heart moves there.

All my struggles march into you,
Towards you.
I am aware of the success
That might never come to me,
As some things are meant for your denial,
For your forgetting:

Isles, alleys,
Roofs,
Banners in the streets;
Let all forgotten things be forgotten still,
Quiet,
Awaiting all of your gifts
All of their lives.

But please...
Don't deny me of the gift
Of forever loving you:

For all things,
All days even,
Might finally forget me.

Find Me, I Found You
Jeffrey Pua Jun 2012
I travel in your fair thoughts
As though to travel in your world.
Sometimes, I try to understand
Why your eyes cannot reach me.
Sometimes, I do not know you but--
But still I want to linger
Like I truly know you.

Shyly, I intend to blanket you with my palms
As if I can cocoon a butterfly back
Into its gentle sleep.
I am absorbed at it and I cannot disengage.

You bring hope and needed refuge to a wandering soul.
Cluelessly, your blue warmth caresses,
And it opens for me
Like an afternoon:
My rest from tough day's work.
Because of you I can somehow get by
With this life.

Love,
You're my north star,
And another,
And a few hundreds more.
I intend to walk and follow
My disregard for my longing heart.
But still, at night, you form for me
A constellation, a guiding invitation
Just to love again.

And how I need to lean on you,
Like a book leaning to another.
But at times, when I can see you reaching out,
It is my hand that readily un-fists and steadies,
Worried for which its not accountable of.

Because of you I can only imagine--
How immense would re-birthing
Drowned islands be inside your heart,
As I wonder at a far-off shore
How to get there, how to know you.

'Cause maybe
Just like me,
You are finding someone new.

Our Eyes
Jeffrey Pua May 2012
My eyes,
Like any other eyes
Staring at the window
In the loneliest of bus rides-
The long way home.

I travel
Like paired green wings
Of a quetzal,
Like vagrant leaves
Led to be nostalgic
To a neighbouring dead tree:
I am the memory
Of my shattered heart.

Through idle times like this one,
I recall myself staring at you-
Un-captured by your smile, your lips,
Your scent,
But instead
Your eyes open for me,
Making me feel the movement of the Earth,
The breath of God.
But I only look at them
Because
That's just what is life for me,
Only because--

One is reminded of hoping
When you are lifting your eyelids.
One is reminded of dreams
By the closure of your eyes.
But when my eyes close
And suddenly reopen,
I tell you:
One is reminded...
...of missing you.

Forgive Me
Jeffrey Pua May 2012
Love’s not simple, God knows it’s not.
If it is simple then it is not love.
But to make it simple, to make it seem simple,
I am sending it out to you, word for word,
Line to line, poem after poem.

I am handing it out to you
Like a million dollar contract.
I am making you feel it, touch after touch,
One halted-touch to the next,
Sadness and happiness.

So forgive me, if I burden you
With all love’s complexities.
Forgive me, if I am heaping it
At your feet, all this confusion.

My heart is only boat tonight,
And you have every right
To own the ocean.
My mind is only wind tonight,
Yours is a closed window.
Our hands were the shiest couple,
And our elbows were French-kissing
For quite some time now.
So I have a liking
For what I cannot have.
I think it is quite clear.

Don’t pull me in.
Don’t push me away.
Don’t tire yourself.
Open the door
Or just have it closed.
But please forgive me,
If I knock at your door
Forever, for I love you,
And I love you, simply,
With all its complexities.

I am offering you
A key to an opened door-
My heart.
Use it well.

Forgive me, dear,
But I love you,
And it is
That simple.

I'm Not A Friend
Jeffrey Pua May 2012
Free your castles to the sky.
Hold a hand
Other than yours
And speak
Like you never met me,
As I go from passing glance
To stare.

Let January be itself
And us
The month to follow
Or months
If your heart seemed willing:

For I am not your friend
Or a stranger
That wanted to be.
I'm just in love,
And in love
I breathe anew.

So search now
As if you haven't found me,
But as for me,
I've found my heart
