Tryst
I won the bloomin' lottery,
Cor blimey so I did!
No more scrubbin' socks for me,
I've won ten million quid!
I'm goin' on a ******,
Nuffin's gonna bring me down;
I'll be the biggest spender,
Gonna buy the whole **** town!

My new found wealth is awesome,
Have you seen my mansion pool?
I play tennis in a foursome,
And my coach is really cool;
On Wednesday's its Pilates,
And on Sunday's it's Judo!
Now I'm jetting to the Maldives,
Toodle-pip -- I have to go!

One finds oneself most indisposed,
To do this interview;
One's butler will be swift deposed,
For letting you get through;
One will accede to your request,
Tho' Sir, this is your lot;
Despite the wealth with which one's blessed,
One has not changed a jot!
I felt you  put me on a pedestal
Until the  day you pushed me down
A bridge of bruises spans our time
I kiss the floorboards of broken promises
Pieces of my tooth dance across the floor
Yet, I handed you my spine
A rope of glass shards I can't hold on
The sky is corroded with my pain

You sit in front
of your computer
and telephone
thinking of the wife
(or husband),
the kids, your IRA,
making money
for other people.
Who loves you, baby?
How long has it been
since you could call
your life your own?
Do you possess
what is your's
or does it
possess you?
Obligation
is not a virtue.
Does your heart dance
or does it merely labor?
There is still time.
Reject the full catastrophe.
Dismiss obligation;
embrace possibility.
There remains
a beautiful world
out there:
hoist the black flag,
live like a pirate,
get naked,
dive in,
be alive.

I love pirates. I am a pirate. It's a state of mind and a way of life. Argh, Matey!

Why do people get married?
Really! Why even bother?
Hopes and dreams
These, all couples share -
A hope for a better future

But after "I do ",
hopes and dreams
turn into Expectations.
Instead of love and passion
Instead of nurture and care
We're held in a debt/debtor state
Until the end of our future

You said, you promised...
Nothing unconditional here!
No better than borrowing from the bank,
Held to imagined debts.
Love ceased.
Love died.
Love made way for a contract -
a sword of expectation

Forgiveness is highly conditional
extended perhaps once,
every 5 blue moons

Instead, let's keep all transgressions
in a special treasure chest
Instead of that love *******
Let's refuse to forgive
instead of together building a nest
Let's allow hatred to fester

Once on a miserably
hot, humid day
cruising above
a silent jungle,
I watched
a twenty-two year old
Cobra pilot
clear his machine guns
on an ancient,
abandoned,
Buddhist temple.

All the hubris
of western civilization
explicated
in one burst.

Homer, who best
knew the hearts
of men at war,
could not
have sung it better.

He told me once,
at seventeen,
in my parents' attic,
that he would be a star,
remake the world
in his own image,
forge his life
by his own hand
with his own tools.

It would all happen,
he assured me,
through his own will
and determination.

Other people
were unnecessary;
fate, destiny, karma
and bad luck
only existed
in the heads
of losers,
not for him.

He was exempt.

Nothing could stop him.

He declared
himself
invincible,
(he had been reading
Ayn Rand)
and smiled
patronizingly
at my own
pathetic hippie
lack of ambition.

Now,
forty years gone,
divorced, broke
and unemployed,
he bums a cigarette
and whines
about the economy.

Apparently
the world
had other plans.
