In the shadowed streets that sigh
Under burden of human cry,
From the troubled hearts that weep,
As secrets silent sleep.

There flows a river where flowers bloom
On banks of gold and verdant plume,
Where zaftig earth finds its voice,
In nature's sweet rejoice.

And as the dawn in crimson hue,
Breaks on world refreshed anew,
Sun of hope and prayer true
Sparkles silver yon pavements' dew.

As I sit at my dining table this morning,
The already hot sun
Caresses my face,
Lifting my eyes,
Golden rays singe
My retinas, my lids shut like a vault.
My mind teleports me
To a summer in South America.
I can hear fingers picking at guitar strings,
I see men with scruffy moustaches
and sombreros. And I
Smell fresh limes.
I lick my lips and sigh,
“Oh, to be back there!”
Fully adjusted to the darkness,
Reality informs me its time for work.
Can I wear some earrings, a bracelet, a necklace
To remind me of this treasured memory?!

If I could reply,
without the pain.

If I were bold,
to break these chains.

It would be as,
If I could fly,
in heaven sky,
to stop time’s sigh.

And with that I closed the door.
It was time to pick up the pieces of my heart,
To use the gold within me to forge them back together.
But like an idiot I left the porch light on,
Just in case you ever come back,
Just in case you remember the way…

Your key is under the mat.

But you’ll find I’ve changed the locks.

I try to write, to express
My happiness, my pain
All those feelings, unexplained

Yet as the pen touches the paper-
No words are scribbled,
No sentences framed

Only etches of mistakes,
loops of black ink
Of caged feelings that never escaped
