the red glow of her cigarette.
the fingers of her left hand
yellow  with nicotine
clutching dying flowers

"buy a rose for your lover," she says,
"buy one for your wife. buy 2."

"the flowers are wilted."

"maybe it's your eyes that are wilted.

she had black hair
black as the night
the violent night
and gray eyes
the shade of ***** ice

"you must love
someone,
some of the time, no?
put a rose on
your father s grave, then."

"love is like lost pennies
falling from a broken jar."

she smooths her hair with one pale,
long, fingered hand, "you re crazy."

"my mom says so."

i was born to
have adventure

I followed her up the steps.

i was born to chase the night
through the forest
of dead roses.
 Nov 2021 Raven Feels
Maddy
Your wind is glorious
Your nearly blew over a ferry to Cape Cod and Nova Scotia
There is more to you than that
Your nights are sultry and velvety with starry blankets
Your lemony sun and turquoise make for great moments
Sunshine and lollipops
There is so much more to you than that
Beaches, vacations, reunions, weddings, and graduations
Milestones and memories
Your days are laid back and carefree
You are more than any other season
You give us a breather
Longer days
Rhymes are cleaner
Rhythms are crisper
Melodies are sharp
You are short and sweet but always remembered
Especially when we turn the clocks back in November

I just had myself to blame
   no control of love's flame.
I saw her and felt the heat
   on the backstairs we meet.
   God awful lightening flash
burns our world to cold ash.
I breathe in your fragrance
I blow out a field of freesias and forget me nots
I catch your smile with my hand
and release swallows and sunsets
I turn your eyes into stars
the night your sweetest silence
Brain, brain go away
Don't want to listen one more day
Already lonely and afraid
Feel insecure and full of shame

Brain, brain don't act this way
You're always angry; Filled with hate
You know we're joined; Can't separate
Yourself your punching in the face

Brain, brain what can I say
To make it so you see things straight
Don't know how much more I can take
Of constant warring and debate

Brain, brain it's getting late
This journey's not some endless race
Life's flying by and at this pace
Forget a win; Not gonna place

Brain, brain let's medicate
I'll feed you drugs and we'll sedate
The only way to mitigate
Discrepancies we generate

Brain, brain we sadly waste
This outcome feels like it was fate
But never was there a sealed date
Fulfilling what we self-create

Brain, brain so much we faced
Success so close could almost taste
Instead our tail we always chased
We'll die alone sad and disgraced

I’m trying to think of a better line
than this
But I’m stuck between your eyes and
this kiss
You, the charmer and I, the snake.
I am easily played into submission.
But it will eventually become your mistake.
