Pasture hills sloping
Green blades rushing
Wave after wave flowing

Falling and rising
Following
Chasing

Sailing straight
Clouds ignoring
The grounded race below
I love the sight of the wind whipping through the grass on a hilly pasture

I love Vick’s Vaporub
Even when I don’t need it.
It’s a smell down
Memory lane
Sometimes just “because”.

It’s like my blanky
Snuggled up against me
As I shiver from a storm
Tapping my window
And the blanket soothes me.
Sometimes it’s Mentholatum... but that didn’t sound as good!

Phone ringing
Phone ringing
Who is it?
No way to tell
The bell is loud and repeating

Phone ringing
Phone ringing
Race to grab it
It might be for anybody
We can hear it from outside

Phone ringing
Phone ringing
Run inside and lift it quick
In an out-of-breath hurry
Answering as politely as I can

Was it for me
Or brothers
Or maybe Mom or Dad
Incoming calls were handled the same
Until caller ID was invented.

I gathered words over time
In a dresser divided
Verbs, pronouns,
Adjectives, nouns
Each in their own separate drawer.

Words that I use all the time
Stay near the top
Of the drawer that
They each belong in

Other words like “quashing”
And “protoplasm” stay near
The bottom and never get used

Until just now when I grabbed them
For this poem.
Just a little ditty with words about words
