There once was a bigfoot whose feet
Were shamefully small and petite,
So he wore some big shoes,
     But the obvious ruse
Was a silly attempt at deceit.
Wondering along the forest edge
Among the endless shadows
Of leaves shaking
I left the known trail into
A lower place
Stepping through dead brush
And tangled mounds of marigold
Red and copper patches,
Old witnesses stitched into a quilt
I found a stone chimney above a lost
Foundation like a worn grave stone.

The ruins called to me.
Pulled toward the lone marker
I sensed a change in the air
A cold sensation.
Without hesitation
I collected and broke branches
From nearby river birch
And built a fire.

I sat grounded in the heart
Of the Home.
Through the flicker and cracks
Of the flame, through the heated air
Breathing life into the flue
A voice from the house whispered.

The sorrows are gone.
I am what is left
A heart broken and alone.
This rooted foundation
Courting this ground
My home fell down
It’s rubble now
The earth reached up
And pulled it down.
The garden is gone.
I am what is left.

I watched the fire die
Out realizing loneliness is knowing
The spirits don’t have answers
They walk on ahead
In circles.
Beating
Like a host
Turned heart
During
Transubstantiation
Spirit
Made flesh
Made flesh
And the wine
Pulses
And pumps
Like it did through his veins
Till
Longinus
Emptied the water out
Obvious now
What it was all about.
loan me a dime
said the poet to the rhyme
dropped like dice
from vanilla ice
the Gods of poetry
spittin words like flem
cause they notice
when you notice them
up in here up in here
shout it like you got no fear
turn that smokin' room around
light her up and buy a round
lines that bring em to their knees
ask Edgar, William
even Socrates
this one is yours
number one on the chart
like a rhyme on a dime
to the beat of her heart
being silly
the elephants stand
woven from weeds
four have been chosen
forced to leave
their great migration.

I keep them company
Rooted in one spot
It seems I am waiting for you
It’s a small city so I’m sure
You’re just around the corner

The sun has shone and hid
Multiple times between clouds
Fluffy and stark white against
An endless Texas blue sky
Your hat nowhere to be seen
Bobbing through the park
I’ve begun to lose hope.
