In India pongal is the best festival
It is not a mere ritual
We celebrate it in January
It is very very customary
It lasts for three days
Bhogi,sankranti and kanuma are the days.
On the first day we have a holy bath
Thinking that it sets us on the right path
Early in the morning we sit around the bhogi fire
Thinking it is the demon Ravana’s pyre
We put on a new and attractive attire
Dreaming life is a joyful boat shire
Children make wreaths of cowdung
Throw them into the fire like a gold ring
The villages are full of colourful bullocks
We sing folk songs taking neem sticks
The bride groom leaves for the mother-in-law’s house
The bride waits for him wearing a new saree and a blouse
Father-in-law gives the groom a costly gift
Mother-in-law makes a sumptuous feast
Younger sister-in-law teases the groom
The bride and the groom confine to the room
Mother prepares delicious dishes and pickles
Father goes to the farm worshipping the sickles
On the last day we go to the temple fair
I hope I made the happy pongal very clear
Yours sincerely,

May these cold waves be bygones,
May the crops be ripened & harvested,
May your family be full of health.

Happy Lohri to North Indians,
Happy Pongal to South Indians,
Happy Makar Sankranti to all.

Come let us all sit encircling the bonfire,
Come let us all pray by offering peanuts,
Come let us all be blessed  with sunlight.

Happy Pongal
Surya Lights the blazing candle in the sky
and our day begins
on a pillow of clouds my spirit
bows at His vast blue altar

In fact, gods, goddesses, earthlings
and all the inhabitants of the Cosmos
kneel and prostrate at His glorious, life giving Feet

Today Lord Surya ascends to His northernmost
temple in the heavens
Courtly tablas boom, traditional Indian trumpets blare

Sweet sticky aroma and flavors of
sesame and jaggery confection
overflow in banquet halls on earth and in Kailasa

Colorful kites, bits of starry confetti
drift downward from the celestial celebration

David and I, our hands folded in prayer
stand on the front lawn offering our salutations
to the Golden Lord

By Serendipitous good fortune, my brother Chris just happens
to pass by at this moment and stops to join
us in our Sun worship

Happy Makar Sankranti
May Surya Deva's auspicious saffron rays
bless you with Peace, Love and Prosperity

THE CLARION CALL
(Bijoylakshmi Das, 15th Jan 2020)
Oh Heaven's Pleasure in the play of the Supreme Vast!
Your Grace elegant pours elixir upon the ailing Heart;
Do drop a few more drops of nectar
on the nescient Earth,
Life lies aggrieved, tired of human thoroughfares' playful act.

Oh Dignity of Perfection! The Celestial Blossoms of the Far!
You move away when Creation gets merged in mud, mire and despair:
Time's Wheel of Annihilation to restore Harmony is always at work,
The imperfections of impurity will certainly die death in the nether Dark.

Your attempts to build the Land of Bliss by Certitude's Grace,
With Nature's amazing phantasy on Beauty's intransigent breast;
The sorrowful tears of the sobbing sky to enliven the fatigued Earth,
The exhaustless marvels do roam around the Sovereign Blessedness vast.

Oh Purity of Certitude! Do cast your immortal glance,
Things ephemeral run so fast to meet the funeral of the mundane chance;
The World is in turmoil, Man has lost his inborn innocence,
The Absolute sits immobile, views all in His apocalyptic Trance.

The unsung notes struck from the strings of the Elysian lyre,
The strength of the heightened Felicity and the soothing solace of the Mystic Fire;
Man's glamour exotic, and his passions' most violent exhibits,
Meet their end in his Self-made cobweb of falsehood and defeat.

Man makes the huge wall of peril around him with Ego and Pride at its helm,
The rays of resplendence reluctant to shine upon its sordid realm ;
The World beyond runs wild in the wilderness of the Vast,
Lo and Behold ! A lovelier perfection is in nascent rise on ashes of the past,

The New Creation is manifest with fathomless Felicity of Harmony,
Notes discordant and all interventions with Nature's activity will meet a devastating destiny;
Your blood-thirst desires to rise to the highest at the cost of the Deprived,
The One Will above will crush you asunder in the dreadful disaster wild.

You are an imperfection, not truly meant for it in the Surrealist Art,
The Supreme Artist paints ceaseless on Nature's all-pervading canvas;
Be Human, love and serve all ;you are meant for Eternity's deathless Love,
You are Infinity's most cherished Guest in your finite human orb.

You are an ever oscillating drop of the large Ocean of immeasurable depth,
You are the scintillating mirth of the Illimitable Illumination ever present;
You are a wonderful surprise, also an experiment of the Perfectionist Art,
Rise to the Zenith of Perfection in Creation's blissful all-transcending Act.

Phoney sulk of elders
Forced bath of lazy souls
New clothes placate elders
Wrath of cold spooks youngers
This definition of Makar Sankranti
I have learnt from some prankers
