The gates of the ancient prison creaked
And the chains clanked in the breeze,
When we pulled in with our caravan,
As we camped among the trees,
The kids went off for a quick explore
And were back before nightfall,
They said, ‘There’s all of this nasty stuff
Leaked out from the old stone wall.’

They said it looked like a yellow moss
But it had a putrid smell,
It clung in lumps to the chains, in clumps
That were hung in every cell,
‘Do you think it grew on the prisoners,’
Said Ted, with his eyes a-glare,
‘I’ve got a terrible feeling from
The damp in the cells in there.’

‘It’s only an empty building,’ said
Darnelle, but her eyes were bright,
‘I heard the prisoners whispering
As they must have done, each night,’
She let her imagination reign
Or that’s what we thought she did,
I learnt to listen more carefully
When she said that she had, our kid!

So later, when they were both abed
I took Clare by the hand,
And led her into the ancient Gaol,
To that misery of man,
Our footsteps echoed on cobblestones,
My voice came back like prayer,
Bouncing back from the old stone walls
In tones of a pure despair.

The moon came filtering down that night
And made patterns through the trees,
While beams shone in to the cells where once
Old men prayed on their knees,
And Clare would shiver where candlelight
Was once the only ray,
To keep the spectres away at night
Until the break of day.

I kept on wandering further in
While Clare would turn around,
‘Let’s go,’ she said, ‘it’s a scary thing,
We walk unhallowed ground,’
But no, I walked to the furthest cell
To the meanest cell of all,
And saw the bones, and the yellow moss
In a pile against the wall.

A beam came down from the rising moon
That lit up the pile of bones,
And there for a moment, all we heard
Was the sound of muffled moans,
A shadow rose by the weeping wall
Of a man who cried ‘I’m free!’
Who dropped the chains of his earthly pains
As he strode away, through me.

And all I felt was a deathly chill
As he passed right through my form,
My mind was frozen, my heart was still
And I felt I was unborn,
But then the morning arrived at last
With a terrible sense of loss,
For all one side of my face was gone,
Covered in yellow moss.

Hunter was happy
The rain was now done
He could go out in the yard
And have some real fun

Staying inside
when there was so much to do
He had to go hunting
For his movable zoo

Hunter like letters
And numbers and things
He also likes dreaming
and the joy that it brings

He pulled out his toy box
And he dragged it outside
I'm going to go hunting
He put his hat on with pride

An old hunting helmet
And one wellington boot
A runner, his jacket
And a toy gun to shoot

I'm off to go hunting
I'll will fill a whole zoo
Just call me for dinner
And with that...he was through

A boy's mind is special
They can imagine the world
Is a magical jungle
That to them is unfurled

A zoo from a toy box
All in order....you'll see
He would fill up his zoo
From A back to Z

First came an aardvark
Then a ******, all stuffed
Then a cheetah, a donkey
All cuddly and puffed

E made him think
Yep...an earwig or two
It fit with the letters
And it would go in his zoo

F was a frog,
Made of rubber and green
G ...a gorilla
With a smile, not mean

H was a horse
with a cowboy as well
The zoo, it was growing
And to him, that was swell

I....had him thinking
It's my zoo after all
So, if I can't get a letter
It won't matter at all

J was a jacks game
Not an animal too
But, the jacks looked like spiders
And this was Hunters zoo

K...that was easy
A Kangaroo with a pouch
L was a llama
With three legs and a slouch

M was a monkey
A whole barrel he had
He played with these some
He wasn't doing half bad

In all of an hour
He had collected a herd
Of stuffed toys, ***** and jacks
And he still had no bird

N was a nerf ball
Or a dinosaur egg
It could be what he wanted
He'd now found that fourth leg

The llama assembled
O was easy for him
An octopus floaty
That taught him to swim

P was a parrot
With feathers all red
Q...that's a tough one
He thought to himself in his head

R was a rhino
With no horn, it was broke
S was a snake
His dad bought as a joke

T was a tough one
A terra-dac-til said he
Not knowing the spelling
And that it started with P

U ...under water
so he found a stuffed fish
This was not all that easy
V...well tosh tish

I'll catch two of another
If I can't think of one
Hunting out in the yard
Is really quite fun

W...a walrus
with a moustache and tusks
Like the gorilla before
made of coconut husks

X...was a tough one
Another dinosaur came
Made from his xylophone
And this dino was tame

Y was a yak
He didn't know what it was
But, he just liked the name
So, a yak ....just because

Z was a zebra
blue and black with no white
He'd colored it in with a marker
When he got bored one night

He'd been out for a while
When he heard his mum yell
Time to come in
Bring your toy box as well

All through his dinner
He told of what he had caught
Of the alphabetic adventures
And the creatures he'd got

He watched tv for a while
Then it was bath time and bed
Where Hunter the hunter
Now had a full head

Now, he was dreaming
Of all he must do
This was Hunter the hunter
And his movable zoo

O’er the seas an angel wishes,
windswept dreams and blowing kisses
Breakfast tides awake the sand
to feature this enchanted land

Oceans green and aqua blues,
tinted morning shimmered hues
A wisp o’ wind doth touch her hair
of tapered breezes come to share

Upon her vessel pearly white
is born the beauty of her sight
So calm at peace and rest allure,
wonders cast from sculpted shore

Adrift to catch a sunny day,
amongst the waters she doth play
Eyes of brown and skin divine,
I long to call this angel mine

I stand the beach in searching of,
that soon my heart shall find her love
As rippled waters bide their time
of deep expanse and salted brine

To sail these waters castaway,
I fall upon my knees and pray
This angel sweet atop the sea,
shall find her way to only me

For on this day as it does smile,
alone she waits in precious style
Of shelled delight and smooth of wake
to bring within my heart to take

This song of coastal oceans main
I hear the melody again
And o’er this dream it can bestow
to sail within her wings aglow

Sun begins its rise, taking baton from setting moon
Freak closes curtain, sealing darkness within his room
Compulsive habits draw and push, metering this tune

Addict sees the devil, meandering wide labyrinth
Drunkard finds green fairy within precious Absinthe
Religious zeal is just a steal from place called Nazareth

Judging from the junkies, who line up on the street
Methadone clinics make perfect meet and greet
Cops are robbers, faking stats, keeping rule of their own beat

Faithful followers of god-pill-poppers do it just the same
All the people seeking steeples, much, much the same
When will devotee know a drug by any godly name?

It all goes round and in this town, martyrs everywhere
Adhering doom upon a tomb, getting closer there
What we don’t know is soon to show a resemblance of somewhere
The looming night felt
The cost of things unknown
The ease as cumbers melt the
weight of umbrage over throne.

Desires that gently glide
o'er delusions quilted soft
a tower of blistering pride
dreams drifting along aloft

We will always dream of more
when the axe comes to grind
upon our anchored necks
as our heads are left behind.
Just a short little deep one here, LOL.
Although the subject is serious, it's kind of fun.

Enjoy!

You remind my mind of magic this body had let go
like the tiny tender shoots that come before the snow
you make mock of mockeries a lesser heart might hold
and sing of things at once belied by souls already cold
You laugh long and easily in place of doubts and fear
my worry only complicates the things your eyes see clear
I held you once and dreamt of all the thoughts I'd help you see
I take my comfort knowing that the student has been me

I saw her in school
And I had this strange feeling
She seemed so freaking cool
Like she gave my life a meaning

We never talked
Just said hello
And then away we walked
My heart used to go all Jell-O

And then one day she talked to me
It was an amazing feeling
She opened up and chatted with me
It felt like I was dreaming

She was very weird
And I fell for her
Her name across my brain smeared
I couldn't help but stutter

She was pretty
And she thought a lot
She was witty
And I couldn't  stare not

She could make my day
With just her smiles
I wish we could go all the way
Together a hundred miles

But alas it all was just fake
We could never have been a 'thing'
Never would I see that wedding cake
Nor that beautiful ring.

We keep running, running, running away.
Avoiding reality despite what they say.
It may get better, but we just can't wait.
Feet to the ground, decide our own fate.

The glamour and glitz, we'll take a pass.
The faux appearance of high upper class.
We've got what we want, no more than we need.
Avoiding the allure of consumption by greed.

Late nights of adventure, writing our story.
Hoping that the results lead us to glory.
A car full of people, good music and hope.
Doing what we can to help ourselves cope.

We've all got our problems, but not on this night.
In this brief moment, there's no need to fight.
For we've got each other, a means to an end.
Our souls remain whole, through the bonds of a friend.
