I always pretend as if things don't really matter to me
But silently, secretly,
I prayed for your happiness when you're sad
I prayed for your success when you've failed
I prayed that all of your problems to be solved
I prayed for you, because I care about you.

With boulders on my shoulders,
and a great weight bearing down.
The last thing I could ever need
is another reason to doubt.

A monkey on my back,
but a blue bird on my wing.

Yo chimpanzee,
come back me up;
I'm about to sing.
Alright, I'm going to bed now.

xuans
the waves that carry you
swelling like a bruise
with every drawn breath
bringing you to your death
waves of turmoil, anguish
with sole will to punish.
trapped; sinking into an abyss
darkness, like a soft kiss.
watching the world cave in
as you think about what could've been
how do you let go of the things
that are ever so haunting?
cast them away upon the waves,
the very ones forming your grave.
Oh, how I know
the contents of your heart
how your heart contained
only light and love
till the day you gazed
upon your form and face so fair
and darkness crept into your soul
and the words of your heart
oh, how they were
" Oh, how others are so dull and worthless
and how I alone shine!"
and oh, how like Lucifer in his fall
how you said, "Oh, I shall reach
the heights of forever
and write my name among the stars!"
Little do you know
the one who made all
shall cast the children of a proud heart
from their great height
and in the dark places you shall dwell
for the one who made all
loves a humble heart
and makes the proud
to stumble and fall.

I am drinking Bourbon Street blues
thinking in jazzy riffs
of a syncopated you
swaying to those snappy beats
head held high
eyes lit with fire
pulling me into your dancing arms
and all I can do is sigh.

He walks in through the front door;
a slim jim in one hand,
a four pack of beer in the other.
He looks at the tv screen to see a blond teen crying.

"What are you watching?"
he says as he crosses the room.
"Intervention," she says from the couch,
with a cup of beer on the table in front of her.

"OOoohh," he says with sarcastic interest.
In a way, it makes sense.
"It makes me a better person . . . " she says quietly,
almost to herself.

But he heard her.
"Watching a tv show makes you a better person?
How the hell does that work?"
His words full of doubt.

"Well, because I've had two husbands who were addicted to drugs, an-"

"And you're not? Ha!
Alcohol's a drug too,
sweetheart."

"Yea, but . . . it's not like I get drunk every night."

"Denial," he says, as he makes his way to the fridge.
"That's the first stage," he exclaims, as he pulls a beer loose from its ring.

"You're one to talk!" she yells from the couch.

He says to himself,
"Yea, well; takes one to know one,"
as he walks out.
Bonus scene:

He walks out of a gas station,
but a car (far nicer than his own) blocks his path.
The passenger side window rolls down.
A young girl sticks her face out.

"Hey, you don't have fifty cents I can b-"
but he just shakes his head.
A smile spreads across his lips.

"Well ******* then, white boy!
You skinny piece of sh-"

She continues to yell insults as the car drives off,
but he can't hear them;
he's laughing too hard.

Gone.
I think...
Used to be right here.
I swear...
Let me check in the back,
Like lungs on shredded feet.
The rocking chair,
Nervous air still swings
...temporarily discarded, that's all.
On the couch cushion,
Here's his book of adventures
The laughter is unmistakable.
Yes I remember the sounds,
Have I seen?
Can I get you anything?
Of course I'm happy to help.
DON'T SIT THERE, that's an antique-
Enjoy the still air, untouched-
No, it's no worry, come on in
The one holding his kitten tight.
Who wanted to save the princess?
Where is the boy in this photograph?
