They all called
One by one
or texted two words
Happy Birthday.

One by one
except the one
The one
I wanted to call

Things are changing
Can you hang on
Things are changing
Bang a gong

Write it on my headstone
Things were changing
And he held on
Bang a gong

Ain’t the first
Won’t be the last
Things are changing
They can kiss my ***

Write it on my headstone
Write it in the sky
Things are changing
I’m holding on

The poem came from a conversation I had this week with a dear friend of mine. She'd texted me that line: 'things are changing.' As I wrote it, this tune from Otis Redding whispered to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyhL0ioST_U

Death metal
This Valentines Day
Mass shootings and
Congressmen pray

This Valentines Day
This Valentines Day

Trump says he’ll pray
This Valentines Day
Does he know the words
Can he read them?

This Valentines Day
This Valentines Day

Way-Out Willie
On the stage now
Hand jiving us
This Valentines Day

This Valentines Day

I wrote this on Valentine's Day, sitting at a little club, enjoying the band and the ambiance. Forgot about it until last week.

You know it's time to go
when your world is one big
Nancy Reagan and it
just says no. No. No. No

No to love
No to jobs
No to Hi's
No to byes

You walk in a
parallel universe
watching, waving
as they and theirs go by

Wash the dishes
Wipe the sink clean
Mop the bathroom floor
Wipe the shower stall dry

Drag the recycle bin to the curb
(**** ‘em off) Throw in a bag of trash
Tape the note on the laptop bag
Watch a movie

Put on clean underwear
Cover the bed in plastic
Open the windows
Keep the screens closed

Swallow the whole bottle
Drink the whole bottle
Fall asleep
Die

This is not a current to-do list. It's one I started awhile back, a long while back and can now look back at that time with a better perspective and not feel the depth of despair and pain and disconnection. To these better days, long may they ride.

Your poems are always sad,
she said
They always start out happy
I said
And then what happens
she asked
The past catches up
I said

But I am your true north
she said
Yes, you are. Keep shining

Can someone
Turn the movie off
Memories
They just keep playing

Reruns and repeats
Regrets but
Never the laughter
Never them

Turn the movie off
Tonight and
Let me alone so
I can rest.

What if

What if me
what if you
What if we
Knew how to

turn hate into love,
fear into trust
then open our hearts
see all of us

What if we
smiled at each other
forgave and forgot
trusted one ‘nuther

Simple things
we make them so hard
But who am I
Some silly bard

"Bard" is a term not in my daily vocabulary. But I thought I'd try rhyming a bit, see how that felt.

When I die
Well they may not even notice
I don't think they know my number now.
If they don't just let 'em alone
I'm happy
Happier than I've ever been

Iowa was my home for so long
Couldn't find a better place to live
But all good things must end sometime
any how
I'm on my way to heaven, who knows
if it's there.

Hat tip to Tanya Tucker and her 1978 version of "Texas When I Die" written by Ed Bruce, Patsy Bruce, Bobby Borchers. There's a sad defiance to its claim of journeys and setbacks and coming home. I woke up singing that song this morning. Here's Tanya: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqOPWieA9Tc

You said that you loved me
Then where did you  go?
I'm sitting here wondering
Just how would I know.

We loved and we laughed
And we both wanted more
I finished my shower.
While you walked out the door

I paid all your bills
And climbed all your hills
So baby won't you tell me
What I did so **** wrong

Maybe that's the real problem
But it wasn't for me.
Maybe all you really wanted
Was just to be free.

The rhythm of this song came from John Prine's "Paradise." Stay safe, stay strong, keep living with fire and passion... in closed quarters for now.

It must be nice
to have and to hold
And be so bold
to dream us twice

It must be nice
to see us tomorrow
As we see us today
maybe better, who knows

It must be nice
us tomorrow
Like us today
who knows they say.

The CAFO trucks roll past
Smelling of hog **** and ***
Their passengers squeal maga,
We are not afraid, they cry
Our **** is in your water
You breathe our **** all day long
Who’s crying now?
Maga, they cry. Hahaha

I don't know why
Why you don't know
What died inside
When you said no.

Would you stay with me
in an online group
If its rules were strong
Would you stay with me

Should our links grow old
Would you update them
With the right address
Should our links grow old

Would you quit and run to another group
Swipe a thousand times past a thousand smiles
Block the fake ones phishing for your real name too
If I stay with you online

You just happened to smile
For you, no big deal
For me, the true sun shone
deep inside me, warm

Another day, maybe two
You did it again
Confirming my theory
Smile equals Life Inside Me

Yeah, Science is Dope
Your smile is crack and I am
Addicted to it
And there’s no rehab for me
