None of them remember,
None of them care,
To them I’m just
A thin line of air.

A line faded
Was it ever there
Can’t remember
Don't really care

How did we know him
Did we know him
I guess not
He left no impression

A line in air
Is never remembered
Nobody noticed
Nobody cared.

I wanna live
With the asana girl
We could be happy
Drinking our ghee
With my asana girl

She speaks in their slogans
I nod and say yes
We roll on our mats and
Breathe through our noses
My asana girl

Twelve yogis humming
A sitar for show
The raja relaxes
And waits between chants
For his asana girl

I don’t need no money
I’m happy as hell somehow
Karma’s a ***** y’know
You see it’s all a big show
Om... om... om

"My darlin’, I
Can’t get enough of your love
Babe
I know I know I know."

"Can’t get enough of your love
"Babe."
I sang Barry White to you
But now it seems
we’re really through

We danced together
Ups and downs
Hand in hand but now you’re gone
Still I sing this same ol’ song
"My darlin’ I
"Can’t get enough of your love
"Babe."

Hang me out to dry
Done this once or twice
Still you make me sigh
Everything's nice

We met at a gallery,
A bar, who knows
All this goes to show
I'm hanging, I'm waiting

You tell me not to call
Then you're sitting at my bar
Open seat next to you
Favorite drink already poured

Hey baby, you say
Come here often?
We laugh, cheek to cheek
Our glasses clink

Long beard, longer arms
Lurching, grinning, having fun
Jamming, slamming, deep
down a rutted country road

Their hope and dreams washed
away in last year's hundred
year flood, the second
This decade but who's countin'

I was a dime-store
Cashier’n in a bad side of town
Just waitin’ for her
To walk in and take it all.

She waved a big smile
Instead of a forty-five
I said yes ma’am and quickly
Handed her my heart

She offered her hand
I couldn’t really say no
We walked out, grinning
Into the night, into life

Dream on, Dream on
Just keep dreaming
Always liked the song

Some days it’s like
stirring around
old, cold ashes
the fire gone now

I’m drowning
Hand waving
Chin is up
Passerbys smile

All around
Smiles and laughs
Busy-ness
So very

I’m drowning
It’s okay
This today
Ends this way

Carry on,
This line in
Air is gone
Anyone?

Senesence and not
pubescence is where
We’ll end up someday
raddled and addled

Our Secrets tattled
by strangers who know
Nothing, and yet speak
as experts on us

Our crypts will be files
the size of a gig,
Sold  on a thumbdrive
for the highest price

Things are all changing

I don’t know and I don’t really care

Things are all changing

There’s not enough air

Water is sewage and truth is a joke

We had us a life

We were going somewhere

Then one morning or maybe one year

We reached all the way to Happy

Decided to turn back.

The laughs and the giggles,

The hugs and the cuddles

No, we’d rather have tears

Hit the gas pedal and slid off the track

We started to spin, our car rolled on its back.

I opened my eyes and it’s all up in smoke

It’s all up in smoke and I cannot breathe.

Tell me why, tell me how,

Tell me where and tell me when

Please won’t you tell me and forgive me my sin.

Give me a reason
To believe
Something to hold close
Just for me

Give me your reason
All your own
That I can carry
Make us new

I need so little
You’ve so much
If you only knew
If you only knew

Would I, could I, should I
Seems like I should
But then again, maybe I shouldn’t
Time and tide, here I sit

If she looks good, what’m I missing
And if she don’t, maybe maybe what
A squint, a stare, a sideways glance
But first a search on Google or LinkedIn

To call or not, to speak or not
No, now it’s to swipe, left or right is how
So we flicker past each other
Glittering arrays of possibilities

I'm a little 'long in the tooth' and bald in the head for the dating scene. This poem started with the first line, then the first stanza and then I laughed and cranked out the rest. That's usually how I write these poems here. A word, a line, a riff... see how far I can run with it, have fun with it. Then let it go and see where it runs with me, has fun with me.

I saw Him on the street
He walked right on by
I waved and I danced
I even said “hi.”

I went to His House
I knocked on His door
Jesus Himself
Said "There’s room for no more."

God, He don’t know me
And if He does
He acts mighty strange

I call him at night
Sometimes daytime too
He asks for my name
Says, who, who are you.

God, he don’t know me
And if he does
He acts mighty strange
God, he don’t know me

Jesus, please help me
Y’Dad’s forgotten my name
He laughed and He laughed
And He said "Ain’t that a shame"

Raddled, addled
oh my goodness
some dimes in the
jukebox baby

A substantive
No gargantuan
Evening awaits us
Only question

Do we grab it
Race like wildfire
Down our road
Never look back

If the wherewithal
lies within us
God’ll forgive us
Might even smile at us

I was born in Salisbury,
Salisbury,
I was born in Salisbury
And no one knows me there.

There’s no money in Spencer,
Spencer
There’s no money in Spencer
Everyone thinks that’s fair.

Granite Quarry is still there,
still there.
Granite Quarry is still there,
And so’s my fam’ly, too.

There’s strangers now in Charlotte,
Charlotte,
There’s strangers now in Charlotte
And they don’t even care.

Friday night I listened to the Jefferson County Green Band cover Greg Brown's The Fairfield Song. Driving home today, I started rhyming in my head. Here's the result. It's not as good as Greg Brown, Greg Brown. It's not as Good as Greg Brown, but that's okay too.

I’m Hoodwinked,
How’d you do,
Your bad voodoo?
Feels so good

You stole my heart
No time to think
My eyes just stared
I couldn’t blink

Now I sit
All alone
Talk’n to you
On the phone

I hear his voice
Across the room
Doing that
Lowers the boom

I’m Hoodwinked,
How’d you do,
Your bad voodoo?
Felt so good

Merriam-Webster's Daily Word today is Hoodwinked. Kinda funny, to have that word on April Fool's Day. Anyway, I thought it'd be a nice exercise to write a poem around that word. Here it is.

I ain't lying
I ain't got the time
'sides what's the point
Truth alone triumphs, right
I saw that on a screen saver

Doesn't matter
I ain't lying
Believe me, now
Time is short
and the seconds
are passing
Faster and faster.

See if I wanna
Tell it all and, dunno, I
wanna see if I

Could shake it up now
Too old or too high too high
She's smiling now, I

Wanna see more, the
Light so bright, so crystal clear
Shines in my eyes, I

Wanna cry is all
So happy, so happy I
Can see tomorrow

If I could write like Pablo
Stirring the hearts (yes, and the *****)
of goddesses and nymphs, oh
what a life, what a life, I’d live

Tis not my fate, still I laugh
For the barn doors are open
the cows are getting out
I’m late, so late for dinner.

No. I have no idea how I made the leap from Pablo Neruda to barn doors and a late arrival for dinner. But even now, I read it and somehow it doesn't seem such a big leap and it makes me laugh. There we go.
Zane Safrit Jan 2019
If you were me
Would you care
Would you smile
All the while

If I were you
Could I laugh
Could I forgive
Say it’s okay

Let’s begin again
You and I and
I as you and
You as I and

See the world as you
See it as me
If you were me
And I were you

If I was god
Would the children die
Would their mothers cry
And their fathers rage
If god was me
Would he forgive you
Draw you to his/my chest
Hold you and breathe

But I am God
And so you are
We’re created in his/her image.

So let’s laugh together
I can forgive
and hold you and
inhale your essence

The children then
can stop dying
their mothers crying
their fathers raging

We can all laugh
and hug each other
and breathe in all
that we are and

All that we could be
Because I am
you and you are
me. God created
us, we see.

Emotionally, intuitively, yes. But, right now, there's so much attention on what divides us. Unfortunate, but this too shall pass. Right?

Heard all the news
Read all the sites
Talking heads views
Little sound bites

I just don't care
I really don't
Cause I got you
Cause I got you.

Trump's up in Flames
Our world is too
No one to blame
It's all boo-hoo

I just don't care
I really don't
Cause I got you
Cause I got you.

Children got fear
Adults got guns
The NRA cheers
We're all undone

I just don't care
I really don't
Cause I got you
Cause I got you.

Black man at home
Waving brand new phone
Cops shoot him dead
20 shots center mass

I just don't care
I really don't
Cause I got you
Cause I got you.

Zane Safrit May 2018
Even now I sing our song
Top of the lung, singing along
I wait for your chorus
But you’re not there

It’s just the one of us
No more pair or two of us
It’s just the one of us
I’m singing along

There’s that bar, you danced on top
I laughed and I held your hand
Till the bartender made you stop
Mosh pit, you giggled, waved at the band

It’s just the one of us
No more pair or two of us
It’s just the one of us
I’m singing along

I want to be a magician

How nice it must be,
to have a vanishing act,
to disappear,
at the drop of a hat,
to dazzle and amaze
all of the days,
and sleep at their end
with a smile on your face

I want to be a magician

Dad, what did ya do today?
I killed some flies
In the Propaganda Wars?
I killed some lies

Flies, lies, all depends
One man’s fly, you know the line,
S’another man’s lie
So swat the fly, **** the lie

Which is which you ask?
Hard to say until they’re dead.
S’tricky like that, so
Be careful, take aim, and pray

Little fat man
hitching his pants up
by the belt to
no avail now

It's a tick
an itch he could scratch
but why now and
why here, in front

of me and her
we're giggling, can't help
it, he's looking
he can't help himself

hip-shake, I say
she laughs, not the stones
she laughs again
We can't help ourselves

Shake for me, I
say, her laugh roars
he's hitching, shaking
he can't he'p himself

We're all little
fat men, hitching and
shaking, scratching
these itches we got

People laughing
Pointing at us
helping themselves
hitching and shaking

What if we all
relaxed and hip-shaked
together, giggling
can't help ourselves.

Seeing who, seeing how
shimmy shaking
smiling and laughing
not so bad, really.

Loan me a dime, he sang
A dime is all he asked
Is that too much
To bother you

Worn hat, gnarled hands
I need a dime
He said, that’s all
Loan me a dime

Back tomorrow
I repay you
If you loan me
a dime, he said

Love lurks in the shadows, a B&E pro,
watching for an open window, an unlatched screen door,
on the not yet hardened heart.
If we’re not careful
It sneaks in through a sly glance
A smile, a nod, a giggle, a laugh
Sometimes it hides like trojan horse in the inane argument
the one that won’t stop, we won’t stop.
it keeps churning back and forth, the everready bunny,
Until we can’t breathe, have nothing left to say
except for what we want to say.

It’s a comedian, hiding in punchlines like
a mowed yard and the trash cans waiting at the curb,
Tax filings and balanced household budgets,
a clean sink
and a car tuned up, gassed up and
ready for the morning dash.

Love announces itself in a shout
a why the hell’d you do that, shout
Love’s a twisted trickster,
hiding in puke
Cold towels on a sweaty forehead
Then the knitted cap
Keeping that cold head warm

Love gets all shy when things get noisy,
The kid who won’t make eye contact
So sit tight, sit quiet and listen
It’s hard
Try it sometime
See what you think
Let me know.

Love’s never found in an open cellphone
Swiping, swiping, no.
Maybe a text, maybe,
But not for long.

Love’s demanding, impatient
Pleeeze don’t give me that
Let ‘em go and if they return
Blah-blah *******
Absence makes the heart shrivel

Love dies in loneliness
Loneliness is to love
Like water is to The Evil Queen in Wizard of Oz
A few drops and it starts to die.

When you find love,
Feed it, feed it, feed it
Let it rest and breathe
Keep it safe,
And never let it go,
Never make it want to hide.

Like soldiers in a ghost army
Broken hearts rise
From the ashes of their jobs
Seeking each other, hoping

For another Sat’dy night
And it’s alright,
For another chance, another
dance, a smile, a kiss

And find their partner
for the night, for tomorrow.
And never again lie alone
Hoping, huddling, praying.

Morning. Beautiful morning.
A shimmering, lacy thing
Bringing Hints and promises
Enticements and gifts
All for the glory of God
Or the vanity of man, woman and child
Some pleasure too,
A bit of Happiness
found in a smile or giggle
A laugh, a song, a dance step

Look up, look up,
The cloud passes by
And oh what joy
its shelter from the sun
And yet and yet
the sun will not be denied

The perfume of pastries
Lurking, waiting
Coffee aroma
Raising its hand
like grade school child
with the right answer
demanding to be recognized

Coffee it is
Coffee it shall be
For how better to see the world
than after a first cup in this early, glorious, morning

It must be love
They say it must be
I say we’re two ships
passing in the night
blinking lights and sounding horns

Circling each other
as we search for safe harbor
Not to be found
We’ll sail the stormy seas

Rest and renew on the calm ones
Rolling over on our bellies
Like Whales and I’m mixing metaphors
Cause it must be love

My brain, fevered rushes
explosions of giddy laughing
in all the wrong places
like checkout lines
or stuck in traffic

Other drivers see a mad man
I see ‘em reach for a phone,
checking their door locks
I laugh louder, they race away

It must be love, I tell ya
Now you’re laughing
Laying in the sun, no need
to blink lights or sound horns

I’m beside you, you’re beside me
Foghorn leghorn I say, I say
You laugh, I laugh
Must be love.

I’m not making it
I think I’m going to die
I’m not getting out
It’ll happen one day shy

One day shy of the
Job of my dreams that coulda
Matched finding the love
Of my life again, return

Yeah, I’m not gonna
Make it, shake it or wake it
This life already
****** me dry, bit by slow bit

I’m laughing somewhere
In here, behind another
Sour riposte
Letter they send me each day

No one wants you, and
Neither do we but hey we
Wish you luck today
And in your career journey

Tomorrow, today
You are not gonna make it
So just go away
Call it a day, go away.

Ain’t it a **** shame
Sure is but for who, me you
Never was gonna
Make it. Joke's on me'n you.

Get by and

Not too loud
Can't lose our

Now they’re gone
What do you do?
Whoa
Whoa

Southeast iowa
It sits all empty
Waiting for us there

Big porch, a bigger yard

Star light, the stars bright
They shine for us tonight.
Some day someday soon
We will see them all.

All of the fuss
Sit down, be quiet
Let the man drive

Let's hope we're alive

I’m missing sports center
Netflix too
Having watched a ballgame
since 2002

The remote don’t work,
but my baby can dance,
the remote don’t work,
but she can prance, prance, prance

The remote don’t work
And I don’t care
The remote won’t work
And we don’t care
