On the surface of the moon, high in the sky and far out of sight.
Lives a creature, in a crater, half in shade, half in light.
The creature has a snarky grin.
And that is where this story begins.
People find it hard to describe the creature they see.
“he’s tall” some say, others “he only comes up to my knee”.
Some say he has two legs; some say he has four.
Some say he has six legs; some say he has more.
Some say he has two eyes, a nose, two ears and a mouth.
Some say he is charming; others say his charms are leaving him, heading south.
But one thing that is known for sure.
Is the creature that lives on the moon is a frightful old boor.
He has no words, no small talk, chitter chatter.
He doesn’t pass the time with a friendly natter.
He slinks and slithers.
He glides and shivers.
A snake, I hear you cry but “no!”
This creature is not a snake, he's neither fast nor slow.
He lives on his own and seeks no crowds.
He shouts at you “turn the music down”, if it gets too loud.
Some say he's a dinosaur, one hundred years old.
Some say he's a young un with a heart of gold.
The creature that lives on the moon, is happy being one of a kind.
He's happy being himself and has no desire to be refined.
The creature that lives on the moon, is happy in his own skin.
Makes no difference to the creature, if he has no known kith or kin.
The creature that lives on the moon, makes no judgement of what you wear.
Makes no judgement of how you choose to style your hair.
That is why the creature that lives on the moon is welcome to attend his neighbour’s parties.
That is why they welcome him with arms open wide,  wholeheartedly.
The creature that lives on the moon is pleasant to them all, but he has no desire to be the star of the ball.
By preference, the creature sits alone in his chair, he does not speak, he does not stare.
He just enjoys the moment, living without a care.
He has no shackles; he is not bound.
The creature is content living life in his crater, he has no wish to be found.
The view he has before him of the planet below is a glorious sight.
A sight that waxes and wanes with the season, sometimes he is in the shade, sometimes eclipsed by the light.
A sight he adores and is grateful for.
A sight he is happy to be considered a “frightful old boor”.
When you see the moon in the sky at night.
Look for the creature, who lives in a crater, sometimes in shade and sometimes in light.
Give him a wave and say a prayer thankful he continues watching over the planet below from sunset to sunrise; from the time your head hits the pillow until the time you open your eyes.

Sweet dreams.

Pretty Poem
Jackie Mead Dec 2017
I want to write a poem, pretty as can be
Using words to paint a picture for everyone to see
I would throw in words of beauty, strength, loyalty, faith, and respect
Add in Fun, adventurous too now the picture is beginning to look a lot like you.
On the canvas, I would draw my heart, wrap the words around it, tie it with a big red bow.
Hand you the package marked handle with care
Treat me gently sweetheart and you can take me anywhere

A Dogs Life
Jackie Mead Jul 2017
Dog walkers come from far and wide, to walk their dogs by their side.
They come by car, with dog, lead, and toys; dogs barking for joy as they arrive.
The door is opened, the dogs jump out, barking getting louder, as their owners shout!
Wait a minute boy, don't pull on the lead, not long now you can soon run free.
Not a care in the world, the dog runs and runs fetching the ball for its owner with pride, dropping it neatly at their side, looking up with big wide eyes; waiting and longing for another surprise.
Where will it get thrown next they look wonderingly, trusting their owner dutifully.
The owner pats their loyal dog on its head and rewards it with a treat.
The dog pays the owner back by falling at its feet.
Dog tired and ready to return back home, it climbs back in the car.
Settles down, no barking now, it's time to get some sleep.
A dog's life is a free life and one without care.
A simple life, no thrills or flare, a good life I do declare.
I am not a dog owner but inspired today on a walk around our quay. Sometimes a simple life is all we ask.

Oh America we feel for you today, 26 lives stolen away
Praying in church for God to rest their souls , lives taken both young and old.
We weep and cry for the family members that remain, hoping that one day they will feel less pain.

Reason on hiatus, no way to make any sense
violence and hatred rampant, way too many, dead
all that's left, is aftermath, no justice too dispense
burying lives, for those who survive, and every tear dropped, or shed

Picking up the pieces, trying to move on, now that 26 lives have gone.
Trying to make sense of what’s left behind
Rewriting Gun Laws, springs to mind, not to take away your right to arms.
Just to make it harder for those that like to inflict harm.

Fight the fight, and know within your heart and soul
remembering those, we can't replace
and in church our guns, to hold

26 souls taken suddenly away,
Lets us all offer our thoughts and prayers to those left behind
Showing the world Humanity wins everytime.

Pray the prayers, and hang our heads, my friends
for those who are with us, no more
and to heaven's gates, commend

Amen

Sailor - c1558
Jackie Mead Jan 2018
The Spanish and the English had been joined in matrimony with a seal of approval and instructions to Prince Philip he was not to try and rule.

In time a Heir would be born to his wife Queen Mary and then order would be restored, Queen Mary who was admired and adored died childless in 1558 leaving her sister as the Heir.

The relationship was a tentative one, holding on by a string, the English plundered Spanish boats and took all of their nice things.
They set their bounty before Her Majesty The Queen and duly she admired and asked for more to be brought to her, she was a greedy squire.

It didn't take long before King Philip of Spain did declare that we would fight the English and stop the robbing Privateers.

Then one day on Plymouth ***
Playing bowls one night, one of these Royal Privateers
Spied a fleet of Spanish ships and ran with all his might
To inform Her Majesty we were under attack
Her Majesty's orders given, we must of course fight back

The Spanish Fleet sailed past Plymouth and dropped anchor off Calais
Storms abrewed and vessels were lost
The Aramada ships scuttled away, returning back from where they had came
Francis Drake was a hero
Her Majesty The Queen was delighted and called him to the Palace where he got down on one knee and was duly knighted.

Sunny days
You came again!
You are a balm to our soul.
In an otherwise world of grey,
You bring colour.
In a world of coldness,
You bring warmth.
In a world of silence,
You bring sounds.
In a world of loneliness,
You bring togetherness.
In a world of uncertainty,
You bring peacefulness.

When the pandemic is at bay.
You will bring beauty to another day.
Thank you for staying around!

Plymouth Citadel
Jackie Mead Oct 2017
At the top of a rocky hill
Overlooking Plymouth Sound sits a Fort big and round
Known to the locals as the Royal Citadel

The Fort protects Plymouth Sound and all the citizens that live
and work around.
Originally designed by Sir Francis Drake and funded by taxes on pilchards exported by sea.
With walls 70ft high and host to 113 guns, the Citadel protected Plymouth for over 300 years and was home to the naval military.

When I was young annual Military Tattoos were held
Every child in Plymouth seemed to attend transfixed by the smart men all in time, marching and playing their drums and pipes.

Now the Citadel proudly sits on display but sadly has no role today, no tattoos or music of the night displays.

By 2024 the Plymouth Citadel will be no more
Three hundred years of history will be replaced by housing much in need but sadly no longer will it have a military history

New Brood on the Block
Jackie Mead Apr 2019
Vampires gathered in a Brood
One large group, up to no good
The most bad *** kids in the neighbourhood

The Vamps wear their, hair faces and clothes the same
White pallid faces, all colour drained
Against dark tailored suits of silky cloth
Their hair dark and long, the look they favoured was one of a Goth

The brood smoked cigarettes without a care
And the total look was one of flare
Blue Suede shoes upon their feet, with the Devil inside them made the look complete

When the clock struck midnight, they would all gather
Drinking, singing, shouting, it did not matter
Together they were going to Hell down below
To where the Devil would sell them some poor persons soul

They would hand over the price they had to pay
30 silver dollars would save the day
Then off to their lair, they would track
With the poor person they had bought, upon their backs

First, they would play a little game
Teasing the poor person with a burning flame
The Vamps, they had no shame
And did not need to know the poor person’s name

Next, they would eat a rather large meal
Whilst the person remained tied and at their heels
Knowing that soon their fate would be revealed

Lastly, they would stand the poor person upright
Bind their hands to a post, ensure they were bound tight
Then each of the Vampires would take their turn
To drink the blood from the poor person and feel the burn

As the blood poured down the back of their throats
Their eyes would roll, and they began to float
Such a pleasant lovely high feeling
They didn’t notice the poor persons soul leaving

This time the Vampires had won their game
No stakes, crosses or garlic to slay them and bring their families shame
They continued to feed on the warm blood
Until the sun began to rise, and the light began to flood

Now it was time for bed, the Vampires all retreated
To their coffins in the basement where they would lie
For now, they remain without worries and undefeated

They would use the time to regenerate, regroup
Tomorrow would bring the same
They would group together in a brood and follow the flame
a late night tale for all you vampire fans

I did a little dance...
Jackie Mead Dec 2018
I did a little dance, when the postman came.
He handed me a letter, addressed with my name.
I was delighted and excited to receive such a gift.
I hurriedly opened it and then saw this:

The letter began with “how do you do?”
I wanted to reply “very well, thank you”
No one was there to hear my reply.
I then continued reading, with a little sigh.

We would like to offer you for the bargain sum of thirty pounds.
The use of our employee to fix your computer, this offer to me was very sound.
The letter stated a number to ring, have your payment card handy when you begin dialling.
We’ll sort it out, just need the long number, sort code and three numbers from the back.
At this point I didn’t know that I would be hacked.
It sounded very easy, I couldn’t go wrong, and I began to sing a little song.

I dialled the number and got straight through, they said “welcome, let’s help you”
“Start Up your Computer, let’s see what we can do”
• Step 1“enter your password”
• Step 2 “say it out loud so it can be heard”

I did exactly as the operator said
I repeated the password as it came into my head
I heard some hearty laughter in my ear
I continued with stealth and still had no fear

Next the operator said “go to your browser and enter these letters”, which I noticed spelt out  "L O S E R”
I asked the operator what he meant but he didn’t reply
I stayed on the phone for a little while longer, still no reply
I noticed there was no noise, chatter or laughter anymore
Then realised what had happened and fell to the floor.

I was still on the floor sobbing when my daughter came home
She called my bank via her telephone
She explained what happened and how I’d been hacked
I’m sat here waiting for the Bank to get back.

The moral of the story is throw these types of letters in the bin
Don’t be weak, don’t give in
Keep your password in your head
Or to be frank, you will end up with no money in your bank.
This is random, the line i did a little dance, when the postman came, popped into my head and i went with it.
We are always getting phone calls, not so much letters, from companies who say they are Microsoft or BT and they can see we have a problem with our PC etc.
They don't know i work in the industry and therefore am very well aware these people do not contact you.
Perhaps this is where this has come from

The Tale of Little Ishimo
Jackie Mead Jul 2018
Once upon a time, long ago.
Lived a young girl called Ishimo.
Ishimo lived in the trees, between the fields and the deep blue sea.

Ishimo one day decided to explore.
Crept downstairs and out the front door.
Silently sneaking on her knees.
She ran away from her home in the trees.

Ishimo had been running for sometime and was hungry for food and thirsty for drink.
Maybe some wine, Ishimo started to think, she had heard her Mummy say that wine was indeed very fine.

Ishimo was missing her Mummy, started to rub her tummy.
She started to crawl around on the floor looking for something to eat and drink.
Ishimo was very hungry, it was a long time since she had fed, she began to think.
Ishimo found on the ground some berries, bright red and looking very delicious to someone who hadn't eaten all day.
She consumed the berries very quick and soon she realised she was beginning to feel sick.

A short time later she did find a half empty bottle of wine.
A few sips was all she had before deciding her Mummy must be mad.

Sometime later now, her belly in much pain, she laid her head down, not knowing when she would get up again.
Sleeping Ishimo was hard to wake, her Mummy was very distressed.
She loved her little Ishimo very much and felt very blessed.
Mummy shook and shook Ishimo with all her might, until day began to turn to night.
She talked to her about her Father, Brothers and Sisters, how they all dearly loved her and truly missed her.

By the start of the next day as the sun began to rise.
Little Ishimo began to open her eyes.
She saw joy upon her family's faces and heard her Mummy's sighs.
Little Ishimo felt truly alive, smiled and started to rise.

Her Father, Mummy, Brothers and Sisters were indeed very pleased, to have little Ishimo returned to them, they had their fears eased.

Now Mummy and Little Ishimo go from town to town, telling the tale of the day that Ishimo laid her head on the ground.
Warning others not to disobey and take it in their own hands to run away.

Little Ishimo and her friends now respect their environment and berries on the ground and are left for the elders to gather and prepare, for some can be eaten if prepared with care.

Be Wise, Be Safe, know your berries, know your place :)
Just a little bit of Tuesday fun - hope you enjoy.

Changes of the Season
Jackie Mead Oct 2017
Seasons they come and go

Winter is long and cold
Log fires burning to warm your bones
Children singing carols in front of altars
Chestnuts cooked over open fires
Christmas Day comes then into New Year, slowly bringing optimism and cheer for the following year

Slowly Winter changes to Spring
Eternally hopeful with all that it brings
Lambs being born in open fields
Cattle outdoors grazing, milk and beef is their yield
Flowers starting to open up, daffodils, tulips, and buttercups
Brightening the landscape for all to see, days warming up nicely

Along comes summer
The sun is strong and days last ten hours long,
Children have no summer school, playing outdoors is the rule, splashing in pools, playing in the park, allowed to stay out until almost dark
Barbeques in the garden with friends and family, day trips to the beach and splashing in the sea.

Slowly, slowly the season changes to Autumn
Leaves change colours, dropping to the floor
Animals go in hibernation finding safe places to store; food for them and their young
Now the days are shorter we don't see much sun
Days shortening, darkness ascending upon us all too soon as the sun disappears to be replaced by the moon.

Soon it will be Winter again, central heating, heavy duvets, thick jumpers, raincoats and hot chocolate drinks, movies on Netflix all good reasons to stay indoors, snuggle up to a loved one and wait again for the Sun.
This is very typical of the English four seasons

A Day at the Quay
Jackie Mead Jul 2017
Where does the sunshine on a sunny day?
Where do people come out to play?
Where can you ride your bike, skate on your board, have a pint at the pub and watch the world go by?
Where can you picnic or barbeque, learn to kayak or canoe?
Where can you be all alone or part of the crowd if you please?
Where can you play Rugby, Football, Basketball or Frisbee , young or old, small or tall?
Where can you run, let time stand still and be free?
Where can you see children playing in the park, splashing in puddles, people barbequing after dark?
Where can you cross Millennium Bridge overlooking the weir?
Where can you climb a wall, indoors or out, play music on a radio, dance and laugh and shout?
Where can you express yourself in Grafitti on a wall, play with your mates, run and kick a ball?
Where can you see flowers growing free, ducks and swans swimming with their families.
All of this you can see for free any day of the year down by the Quay.
We live by The Canal in Exeter and all of this can be found in a single day

Wedding Day
Jackie Mead Mar 2018
The ultimate day when families and friends come from far and wide
To stand by your side and rejoice when they hear you say the words “I DO”

Two simple words but what do they mean?

I DO – love you with all my heart until the day that we depart.
I DO – want you to love me too, forever and ever you say “I DO”.
I DO – want to take you in my arms and walk with you by my side, come along with me sweetheart we’ll travel far and wide and together, we’ll enjoy the ride.
I DO – want to grow our family, increase our Kin, brothers and sisters sticking together through thick and thin.
I DO - want to support you in all that you do, travel the world and see things new
I DO - want to be by your side to wipe your tears when you are down, to catch you should you fall
I DO - want to adore your body and you can ravish mine, always  keeping our bodies deliciously entwined

But most of all Sweetheart I Just want you and if you want me too, then i will be the happiest person on this earth to utter those two small words "I DO"
Our Anniversary is coming up 27th this month and our Son is getting married 31st March, it just got me thinking.

Amongst us they walk
Jackie Mead Apr 2019
Amongst us they walk
Mostly unseen
Once in a while you may hear them talk
Once in a while they appear in front of you; as if in a dream

These are not friends
They are not colleagues
Their life on earth came to an end
They are walking towards you one thing on their mind; to bring you into their fold and within the depths of their league

They appear ghostly but not just a two dimensional figure
They have clothes, hair and skin
Their skin has patches missing and is covered in fissures
They walk stiffly as rigor mortis has set in

By day they reside in their graves in the ground
As midnight strikes you will find them walking around
Arms held out in front as they walk towards you
Don't lose sight of them as you back away; keep your eyes glued, keep danger at bay

In a dream like state they continue to roam
Rampaging streets and destroying homes
Dont give them food or water
Lock up your sons and daughters

When the sun begins to rise
and the light hits their eyes
They will return to their graves below ground
Another day over they will remain in prose; until the dark descends and once again they rise as an army to fight their foes

Amongst us they walk
Mostly unseen
Once in a while you may hear them talk
Once in a while they appear in front of you; as if in a dream

Around and around the walking dead jog
Like a day of zombie ground hog
it's a project i'm working on
I have a book of Vampires, Ghosts & Knights and i'm working on updating it with a few new poems

Don't have nightmares :)

Raincoats and Welly Boots.
Go together like
A pantomine tale and mother goose.

Raincoats and Welly Boots

Little girls and little boys;
playing in natures endless supply of toys.
Walking through puddles, almost knee deep.
Splashing in mud pools, mud covering their feet.

Raincoats and Welly Boots

Wearing Raincoat and Welly Boots
Splashing, laughing not a care in their world
Should be the entitlement of every boy and girl.

Raincoats and Welly Boots

For just 5 minutes
Discard your black shiny shoes and Italian suit
Put on your Raincoat and Welly Boots
Remember when once you were young
Splish, splash, splosh oh what fun

Raincoat and Welly Boots
Jackie Mead Dec 2017
As we take a break before new year and congratulate ourselves for surviving Christmas and all the cheer.
We've wrapped all our presents, exchanged them with loved ones, sampled tons of food, drunk lots of wine and beer.

Onto New Years Eve at full speed, dressing up, partying all night, prosecco bottles popped, party games played, tables laid with tons of leftover food mince pies, crackers and cheese, roast potatoes with sunflower seeds.

Raising our glasses in a private moment to loved ones lost, trying not to cry, at least not for too long.

New Years Day we will stand on the scales take a deep breath and slowly exhale.

The numbers have climbed higher than we'd like, I'm trying to remember when I last rode my bike.

My New Years resolution list begins, nothing simple I will challenge myself with pride.

I'm going to lose a bucket of weight, maybe relearn how to skate, I'll join the gym and go every night, give up the drink and anything fun including cakes, biscuits and the odd bun.

I'll walk every day no matter how late, cook everything from scratch on our plate, learn a new language or maybe two, take the grandchildren to the zoo.

I'm going to swim the English Channel, roller skate with the grandkids, get a tattoo of fake eyelids.

I'm going to eat salad every day, give thanks for every day, write in my journal, learn to pray, meditate and salutate to the sun, go for a 10mile run.

If I get unscathed to the end of another year, I'm going to raise a glass of that local beer and drink in full the Christmas cheer.

Happy Christmas and New Year everyone ☓
Happy New Year everyone, thank you for welcoming me into the HP fold in 2017, here's to many more hours/days/months of entertaining, enlightening poems from you all, see you in 2018.

Chinaski, Chinaski come over here
God Chinaski you stink of beer
Your late again and your work is slow
I should write you up, one more and they will let you go

Chinaski thinks to himself you'll see, I will not conform to who you think I should be
You can stuff your job, the pay is lousy anyway
I have better ways to pass my days

Down to the civic Chinaski did trot
They wrote up his resignation and cut him a cheque
Chinaski took it with great cheer walked down the road and bought a couple bottles of wine and a fifth of ***** and a six pack of beer

He got in his car and off to the track to blow the lot on some halfpenny nag
And to pick up a lady to befriend, maybe get lucky and back to mine, where we can share some bottles of wine

If not so lucky then that's fine by me, I'll get drunk and write my short stories
There's been one constant in my life, longer even than I was married to my wife
That's my typewriter it's special you see
It follows me from room to room, cheers me up when I feel gloom
I put the paper in and turn the carriage and start to write of love and marriage of growing up and moving out, of fights and bars and women and cars.

I write of being on the street of all the women that I meet
I write of work and racing, I write of hardship that I'm facing

I write of the tough life I've had but I don't write it for you to be sad
I write to make you smile and laugh
I write because it helps you see, I write it to cleanse me

If I make you happy along the way then well what really is there left to say

Have a good day, have a Chinaski day
For my American fellow poets, just recently discovered Bukowski, I guess like marmite you either love him or hate him.I can't get enough of him, just finished ham on rye, a brilliant book, really draws you in.  I'm looking for on writing or Hollywood but very expensive on amazon UK and I haven't seem them on the stores I'll keep looking though - have a good day

Daisies
Jackie Mead Jun 2019
Daisies a flash of white in a field of green
One of the most beautiful sights you ever will see
The daisy spreads itself far and wide
Fastly covering the countryside
Butterflies and Bees hover by
You even attract the common fly
Strength in numbers, you grow and give;
Your nectar for other insects to live
The Daisies wanting nothing in return
They just ask you show some discern
As your child runs through the fields; making daisy chains
Ensure when they leave, some daisies remain
Had a little walk with my grandson Roman today and the park was full of daisies, buttercups and the canal had really small brightly coloured fish and dragonflies, which were bright blue. It was really energising to see, I wish I could post a picture for you.

The Boy in the Cave
Jackie Mead Apr 2018
There was a boy in a cave
Fearful that he wouldn't be saved
He would never know if he would be missed
Never know a tender kiss

He had followed two boys underground
"ssh" they said not a sound
Then they pushed him to the ground, tied his hands, tightly bound
Ran away and left him there, they were not nice they didn't care

The game they played was Hide and Seek, the boy in the cave was mild and meek

The boy was there for what seemed like days then suddenly, was he dreaming a sunny haze, or had he ended his young days alone in the cave, unable to be saved.

A ray of light beamed upon the floor
Shone bright upon an exit door
The boy began to hatch a plan but first he needed to break free his hands

He found a rock and set about setting himself free
The boy became ecstatic hoping to be home for tea
It took a while but the binds did break, he shuffled to the door
Grabbed the handle, opened wide and ran outside
What greeted him was a lovely surprise, he couldn't believe his eyes

He had not expected to be missed but clearly through the rising mist he could see his family with tears in their eyes, giving thanks to the heavenly skies

The horrible boys well they went on to grow up mean and bad
They lived a life of loneliness and were very sad

One day, the three did meet, the Cave boy now a man, walked right up and shook them by the hand
"Thank you" he said  "what you did turned my life around, i now have a family and a home built underground" .
Just came to me last night, couldn't wait to write it up this morning, hope you emjoy

He wil be sadly missed
Jackie Mead Jun 2018
Dear brothers and sisters
We are gathered here today
To celebrate the life and slow demise of a very close friend

He was a big part of my childhood and yours
But of late his use has dwindled daily
Until sadly today he exists a hermits life
Only very rarely being called into use

I fear the day is upon us that he shall no longer be useful and therefore I ask you join me in wishing 'Common Sense' a safe and fruitful retirement

Popped into Dr's surgery to ask I could donate my books to the surgery for the children when they are visiting only to be told that the books had been removed from the play area as they were considered bad for children who may get a papercut or put them in their mouth. A Ghost Love Story
Jackie Mead Apr 2018
There was a lady ghost, from the past.
Who liked to scare people, just for a blast.
She lived in a cottage by the sea and liked to frighten people, like you and me.
The lady ghost went by the initials LJG.
One day feeling brave, I decided to seek her out
Talk to her, see if she would reveal
What kept her at the cottage every day, why she would always scream and shout
See if I could encourage her to stop, see how she would feel if I decided to turn the wheel
I had a plan in mind, you see
To wait behind the bush in the garden, for the ghost to appear
Whilst waiting, I may crack open a beer
Then without warning I would run out, start waving my arms and scream and shout
Wailing loudly, I would say, “hello LJG and how are you today?”
The lady would stop and take a breath, then reply
“I’m peachy my friend why do you ask?”
“I’m here having my usual blast, what are you doing imitating me? I’m the ghost LJG, there is only
one and that’s not you, it’s me!”
To my surprise the Lady ghost did not appear, I waited all day and all night
I was getting very worried that she may have found somewhere else to cast her fright
I went back again the next day, and waited my time once more
I spent several hours feeling bored and decided to step out from the bush to explore
First, I decided I would run around the back, see if the ghost had left any tracks
I tiptoed sneakily, keeping in shade, so I would not cast a shadow on my parade
Nothing to show, nothing to see, I would change my tack
Go Indoors, sneak, creep, climb up the stairs, to see if other plans could be made
Upstairs I found a handkerchief, it had frayed at the edges and tear stains of love soaked into it
I put it in my pocket and started to walk away
When a very small voice asked “why are you taking away, my heart and soul of yesterday?
I halted, I did not expect the lady ghost to show herself
I was ready to give up, retire,
fade away, put my dreams back on the shelf
At last I thought, here was my chance, would she recognise I was once her forbidden romance
"Lovely Joy Golden it is me, look deeply into my eyes, tell me who you see?"
The lady ghost could not believe what she saw before her
Her first and only love, denied by her father
The one she cried for day and night, her pain causing passers-by such a terrible fright
" Pierre my love come set me free, we'll be together now for all eternity "
"No more crying for you my love, I can now be your Prince Charming and you my sweet love"

Let us not judge
Jackie Mead Aug 2018
I search each person that I find,
Wondering whats going on in their mind,
Who are these people, where do they go?
Are they hurting of body, mind and soul?
Or are they happy with their life?
Carefree and spirited, no strife,
So many people, so many situations,
Let us not judge by race or nation
Let us help each other as best we can,
One Mother, one Father, One as Man
I wrote this in a collaboration on another website but thought it stood on its own as its own poem.
Hope you enjoy.

A Young Lads Tale
Jackie Mead Apr 2018
A young lad only fifteen, lived a hard life, grew up to be mean.
One day the lad being hard, got into a scrap in the schoolyard.

He was taken at once to the Headmasters room.
He was left alone to sit and reflect, awaiting his doom.

He began to ponder and wonder about his behaviour.
He thought, If I am always getting into fights, will anything ever come right.?
Will everyone I meet, walking down the   street, stare and pass me by, too scared to even say 'Hi'

The Headmaster took his seat and told the boy to stand.
He asked the boy why he was always so mean? Did he think it made him a man?

The boy took a while to think, took a breath and replied "i'm sorry for the trouble I cause, I've had a hard life but I can turn it around, if you can take a chance, find it in your heart to give me a new start".

The Headmaster was taken by surprise, looked into the boys  eyes and replied
"if as you say you will change your ways from today, then I will let you go on your way"
"should I hear any reports of you being mean and unkind, any reports of you crossing the line then you will be expelled, feel sure it's the truth that I tell"
"now be on your way don't let me see you again today"

The boy relieved ran out the room and went to every class until every exam he did pass.

His life turned out pretty good
, he got a job as a mechanic working under the hood.
His reputation grew far and wide, he worked hard and with lots of pride.

Then one night working late, a beautiful young girl brought in her car, and plucking up courage he asked her on a date.

Two months later down on one knee he asked her to be his wife, thankful for the second chance he was given to turn around his life.

Five years further down the line, now  Father himself to two.
The Headmasters car had broken down. The boy now a man, towed his car into the garage.
He told the Headmaster of his marriage, how he owned his own home and ran his own garage.

The Headmaster puffed full of pride, glad the lad had turned his life around, and was living a life that was now sound.

You see that day Five years past was to be the Headmasters very last, he was feeling happy and carefree.

Between you and me, he did relate to the boys state, having lived a hard life too.

In his early days the Headmaster's life had been saved when someone gave him a chance.

With this in mind and feeling generous of spirit he gave the boy a chance to prove, the boy took it as he had nothing to lose.

Doesn't everyone deserves a second chance?

Stand and Stare
Jackie Mead Aug 2017
People often stand and stare at nothing in particular.
Lost deep in thought, emotions bare.
Does anyone really care?

I stand and stare by your side, I will happily join you for the ride.
Let me help you find your way, together towards another day.

Together is stronger, a love so deep, a love that allows you to weep but picks you up when you are down.
Changing a smile from a frown.

Have faith in love to be your friend, take a chance and see.
That if you truly love someone you can truly be.

Jackie Mead Mar 2020
If you are reading chapter 9 you will be familiar with the characters of mine.

There is Mouse, of course, he has a house on the River Louse, his Wife Hilda and 11 Sons and a Daughter.

Frog and Bee, they live on a log in the middle of a bog, happy and free.

The Fly with one eye and his friend dear, that is, of course, the Elf with one Ear.

The Horse and his Master, from the town of Cry.

A Dolly called Molly and her dear friends Ferret the Cat, and a Dog named Mouse, who all live nearby.

In the nearby town of Cry there live a Mayor and Mayoress, a pair of beautiful, graceful Swans.

Mr Mayor has such an air of authority, when he talked people listened, what he was saying took priority.

The Mayoress walked around with such a hypnotising grace, people would stare at her, stuck , unable to move, paralysed in one place.

Together they held people’s attention, lest the Mayor or Mayoress would think to give them a mention.

One day,  it was a warm sunny day on the River Louse and the Mouse with a house on the River Louse was sunning himself in his pretty garden, whilst Bee was buzzing closely by.

The mouse with a house on the River Louse would soon need to go indoors and get ready, he was expecting to see not only Frog and Bee but also his other friends; the Elf with one ear and the Fly with one eye.

They saw each other most days especially now the sun was in the sky and it was warm outside.

They were free to wander wherever they chose; sometimes swimming in the river, sometimes lazing on the bank, closing their eyes, having a doze.

The days passed swiftly when they were all together, no need for advice on social distancing or where to travel or indeed no need for a bellwether.

One fateful day this would all change the dear friends were soon to become estranged.

The Mouse with a house on the River Louse noticed it first; he had seen it on the news, he didn’t believe it affected him, surely he would not be affected by something started in Wan-hu.

That day the Mayor and Mayoress were visiting house to house when they came upon the house that was home to the Mouse with a house on the River Louse.

“Come in, come in” the mouse began to say but the Mayor interrupted him “I have something important to say!”

“Today we have been advised by the Prime Minister that we are no longer to have parties in the sun, a measure called social distancing has begun”

The Mayor continued to say “there is to be no more socialising with your friends until I announce these measures have come to an end”

“Most importantly he continued to say “ “you must wash your hands regularly each day with soap and hot water, pass that on to anyone within your home, your Wife your Sons and Daughter”

“now I must hasten on my way and wish you and your family a good day”

Mouse was beside himself, for once he did not know what to say, he wouldn’t see his friends anymore and the Mayor had implored him to stay indoors.

What was he now to do; who would he pass the time with if not his friends, his whole world was coming to an end.

Hilda his Wife was not so downhearted

“There are tasks indoors you could complete if you don’t want to spend the time downbeat.”

“First there is painting to be done, starting in the boys' bedrooms I was thinking wheatsheaf yellow, you know the colour of the Sun!”

“Next I am sure your Daughter would like you to take her for a ride on her new bike,  around the living room, I think the size of that room is the best.”
“by the time restrictions are lifted she will be ready for her cycle proficiency test”

“We could play a game of chess, monopoly or trivial pursuit, drink grapefruit juice or a glass of wine made from arrowroot.

“There are TV shows that have got the boys excited; like Marvel revisited and Iron Man and Hulk reunited”.

“as for you and me, we can put the children to bed, have a romantic meal, soup of carrot and a main meal of chickpea”

“Does any of this sound appealing to you?”

“Have a think and let us know what you want to do”

The Mouse didn’t have to think or take up with an alcoholic drink, he knew what he wanted to say.

“My dear wife, Hilda, you are quite right, we have each other and that’s alright”
“if when restrictions come to an end, I will, of course, love to see all my friends, they seem like family too at times”

“For now, though I just need you, my sons and daughters and plenty of soap to wash my feet together with hot water!”

His wife and children began to laugh, they had thought the world had come to an end when Mouse was told not to see his friends.

Instead, now life had just begun, a different life to one he had once known but that was alright because he had his health, children, and wife and that meant he was not alone.

A pandemic had caused the social distancing now in place, travel had been stopped to places far and wide.

It seemed Humans were the worse affected, but the illness had transcended from animals in the first place, the restrictions, therefore, were needed to protect all animals nationwide.

Restrictions would be in place for the foreseeable time but when lifted the whole village would celebrate with a posh ball and dance to the music of Five in a Pen.

A posh ball so big, it would include mouse, frog and bee, molly the dolly, elf with one ear, fly with one eye , butterfly and Mayor and Mayoress, ducks of all names, squirrels and snakes, badgers and moles and all manner of creatures would attend this very posh ball.

Creatures would come from far and wide and mouse would have his children and wife by his side and would puff out his chest showing his pride.

As long as his family and friends made it out of restrictions without illness then the plan the Mayor had put in place would seem flawless.

The Mouse with a house on the River Louse knew that times were changing, the after-effects of the pandemic would be long-ranging.

That was a choice he was willing to make for his wife and his children’s sake.
If you are in isolation then my thoughts are with you and I hope you get well soon.
I wrote this to go alongside my other Poems of the Mouse with a house on the River Louse and his friends>
You are the first to read it, I hope you enjoy it and take it for what it is a light relief at this time.

Winter trees
Jackie Mead Jan 2021
Winter trees, standing there.
With your canopy of leaves stripped, your branches bare.
You remind me of Samson when Delilah stripped him of his hair.
Is your strength diminished in the same way?
When the sun retires and blue skies have turned to grey.
Your trunk and branches in summer, used as a hiding place for feathered birds;
And squirrels that are grey and furred.
Your branches once bearing fruits of gold.
Stripped bare you look solitary and old.
You have a look of elegance whilst waiting for the earth to warm.
When you will once again become mother nature’s store, birds and bees visiting in their flocks and swarm.
A miracle of nature.
A glorious portraiture.
Inspired by morning walk.

Fathers Day
Jackie Mead Jun 2018
Its Fathers Day and everyone is celebrating
Fathers receiving pressies from their kin
Fathers being taken to lunch, menus that have them salivating
Fathers cards lovingly written and given

This year it has hit me hard noone to buy a present or card
The cards have been in stores for a few weeks
They call me to them and I start to seek
Then I remember my Dads no longer here
Noone to wish Happy Fathers day cheer

My Dad, was fun, loving and kind
My Dad was intelligent of mind
My Dad was sporting, table tennis, football and cricket
My Dad was this girls winning ticket
My Dad loved classics, music and books
My Dad had film star good looks
My Dad was my best friend and I loved him to the very end

So instead of a card or a pressie, this year
I will lift a glass of alcohol cheer
Raise my glass and thank the universe for my Dad
He was the best a girl ever had

Dads are a special gift to cherish all year
So raise your glasses and ring out the cheers
Happy Fathers Day to all Dads including those no longer here.
It has been 2 years but this year has been particularly hard, I keep seeing cards and presents in all the shops and then remember I don't have anyone to buy for, it's hard.

36 years of loving you
Jackie Mead Mar 2018
We are strong and in love, I love everything you do
You pull me to your side, put your arms around my waist
Kiss me on the lips so tenderly and sweet
Take off my shoes and massage my feet
You make me laugh when I am down, working hard to remove that frown

We are strong and in love, I love everything you do
You wake me up with your kisses all over my face
Let me know that you want me the minute you're awake
Fill me with your love, in bed it’s give and take
You show me your love and support every day, in all that you do and all that you say

We are strong and in love, I love everything we do
We raised three children to be good not bad
Had lots of laughter and our fair share of sad
Young grandparents at just 45 but holding little Tansy bought such joy to our lives

We are strong and in love, I love everything we do
Fabulous holidays to the South of France
Romantic Meals followed by a dance
Days out to the beach and the Park, parties in the garden until after dark
Holidays to the Caribbean and the USA
Along the way loved ones fallen but memories remain
Talking about our losses keeps the mind sane

We are strong and in love, I love everything we do
Now we step back into our roles as husband and wife but
most importantly lovers for life
Hold my hand baby and let's go
the whole world awaits for us to roam

We are strong and in love, I love everything we do
Love for our family will never end but now is our time my dearest best friend
So let's live our life, enjoy the ride, taking each day in our stride
Forever together and by each others side

It's been 36 years since we said I do
36 years of loving you
I wrote this for my husband but he says I can share it with you.

The Fall of Notre Dame
Jackie Mead Apr 2019
We watch on television as Our Lady, The Notre Dame
Becomes totally engulfed in searing hot flames

Mourning the loss of a building 850 years old
Recalling stories and tales once told
Of times we visited and paid our respects
Rejoicing in the glorious paintings within and the beauty of its outstanding Gothic architect

Dear to the heart of the people of Paris
The core of the building will be truly missed

Clear the rubble and the embers,
Give thanks for the work of the Pompiers, no one lost their life, remember
Secure the structure, save any Art that can be found
And hope the Parisiens can turn this around

Pray In time The Notre Dame will rise once again
As it nestles in its island on the River Seine
Sad evening tonight to see The Notre Dame in flames, one Fireman injured but no lives lost.

I wrote this Poem, thinking of the times I've been,  last time I attended with Keith my Mum and Dad. It was a wonderful break, Notre Dame was extremely busy, we sat outside for some time just basking in its beauty and just pleased to be there in its presence. Dad couldn't walk too well, so it wasn't possible to go in.

I hope it resonates with someone.

Our thoughts are with you Paris #notredameinflames

Pelicans and Iguanas
Jackie Mead Oct 2018
Pelicans gracefully sweep and soar in the clear blue Carribean sky.

Iguanas lazy at first, quicken as they walk by.

Pelicans hunting for their tea, hover over the green blue Carribean sea.

Iguanas of brown, blue and green, disguise themselves, not keen to be seen.

Pelicans, hover, swoop then dive, catching fish for their tea.
Showing their skills to anyone that wishes to see.
Wonderful birds in all their glory.

Igaunas flick out their tongue to catch a leaf for their tea.
Avoiding the rays of the hot sun, underneath a shady tree.

Fascinating to watch and see these beautiful creatures in all their glory.
Instead of people watching its nature watching

Balmy Day at the Quay

It's September and the sun is in the sky
No need for jumpers or coats as the sun blesses us with warmth from its rays on this beautiful balmy day
The Quay is busy today, people living different lives mixing with each other side by side
Children in their pushchairs being pushed by their mums
Children, men and woman in kayaks making the most of the late sun
Shops and cafes open, tables and chairs outdoors full
Birds flying in the sky and on the River, swans pigeons and gulls
A homeless man with all his worldly goods feeds the birds by his side with the last of  his food
Cyclists enjoying the sun whilst out for a ride
Elderly people out walking with their family by their side
People saying 'hello' , 'good afternoon'  'it's a pleasure to see you' 'let's meet up again soon'
It was a pleasure to be a part of the balmy day by the quay
Jackie Mead Aug 2021
Where do the birds go at night?

When the noise ceases and silence surrounds.

When there are no starlings or sparrows flying in the sky or to be seen upon the ground.

Where do the birds go at night?

When it is perfectly quiet where can all the birds be?

Are they asleep in bushes close to the ground or nestling high up in a tree?

Where do the birds go at night?

When darkness descends and evening arrives, where do all the birds hide?

Are the birds playing hide n seek, having a bit of fun, as they wait for the first glimpse of the morning sun?

Where do the birds go at night?

Do you ever wonder if they have a secret life?

By day they are happy, singing a cheerful tune. By night they are more reflective singing Clare De Lune.

Where do the birds go at night?

Is it a puzzle that keeps you awake?
Do you toss and turn, until the birds return at daybreak?

Where do the birds go at night?

When morning breaks and the birds begin to sing.
Every morning seems like the first day of spring.
Waiting for the first sight of birds gathered upon your fence.
Full of hope for the day to commence.
Inspired by a visit to the Lake District this week.
I hope you enjoy.

Memory Lane
Jackie Mead Jul 2018
I wander down memory lane
Crossing corn fields, climbing over farm gates
Meandering through cobbled streets
Golden sandals on my feet
Tanned skin glowing, oh so brown
Smiling, laughing never a frown

I wander down memory lane
Swimming in blue sea, climbing rocks,
surfing in the choppy sea
I have a feeling of being young and carefree
Holding hands with my love, hands fit together like one soft glove

I wander down memory lane
Christmas tree standing tall, dropping needles on the floor
Mulled wine warming on the stove
Christmas tunes playing on the radio
Wrapping presents for the children, while they sleep
Presents wrapped, stored safely away from their keep

I wander down memory lane
This time a road trip to foreign lands
Car packed full to the brim, clothes, games, buckets and spades
Walking along glitzy promenades
Dip our toes in the warm ocean, walk on golden sands
Play mini golf, ride on a big dipper, have a late supper, go to the circus, catch a band

I wander down memory lane
To March and an usually warm sunny day
My wonderful Dad by my side, i step out the car a smile a mile wide
Todays the day I say i do for the rest of my days
It all goes by so quickly and in a bit of a fuzzy warm haze

I wander down memory lane
Full of wonderful memories and happy days
I wander down memory lane
Just for a while
The memories i recall making me smile
Its lovely to wander even just for a while
2 years on Thursday i lost my Dad, the weekend has been about remembering such happy times.

Breathe in the Stars
Jackie Mead Jun 2020
Do you ever wonder, what why, who you see?
When you cast your eyes heavenly.
By night when the stars shine bright.
Like fires burning in the skies.
Do you ever wonder who you see twinkling before your eyes?
Do you ever wonder who has joined you that night?
Is it a popstar, politician, inventor or wisely sage?
From a time so long ago, you cannot remember their exact age.
Clinging to their last song, speech or invention.
Letting go, never their desire or intention.
Or is it a lost loved one?
Letting you know they are near.
Listen very closely what do you hear?
“Hi, its smee, I know you think of me all the time, I just wanted you to know, I did not go far, I am right here!”
Taking in the stars is a game we all love to play.
Breath in
Breath out
Take a minute
Take Five
Take a moment to feel alive
Connection made now you can rest.
Relieve the pressure from your chest.
Sleep tight without longing.
Knowing you can see your loved one again tomorrow.
Brings a small amount of peace and joy, helps to dim the sorrow.
Dedicated to all lost loved ones, in particular Dad, Pete, Shane, Oskar and Ted.
Always missed, never forgotten. Keep shining brightly, we see you.

The end of the day

The sun has set on another day, the sky settling a darker grey.
The Moon has not yet graced us with its' presence.
The  nearby businesses, shedding light, fluorescent.
Illuminating the water in yellow and blue columns.
Like candles flickering in a church, in a scene, oh so solemn.
People are walking home from work, some meeting for a drink or perhaps something to eat.
Swans are gathering in a group, taking food from a human hand, such trust rarely given.
I am lost in my thoughts as I watch the scene before me on the still waters, and just listen.
Listen to the sounds of the end of the day.
Last night walking home from the Chiropractic. It was a wonderful scene, one I hope I did a little justice to.

Filled with love and joy.
An early morning start, opening presents with your girls and boys.
Fingers crossed they've been good enough this year to get their wished for toy.

Eating and drinking with your family
Playing lots of games.
Log fires burning, chestnuts roasting in the flames.
Grandad snoring in his chair.
Children laughing at his balding grey hair.

At 3pm after the Queens speech, together we all sit.
A table that usually sits four, now sits ten people or more.
Turkey at the centre, 3 veggies and gravy in a dish.
Everyone pulling crackers and making a New Years wish.

Later in the evening corrie street on the tele.
Everyone sat together on the sofa watching with very full bellies.

Another Christmas day almost done.
Mum and Dad relaxing with a glass or two.
Raising their glasses and toasting a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you.
Merry Christmas everyone wherever you are, however you celebrate I hope you have a lovely day.

Treadmills, rowing machines,  standing bikes
Keep going 30 secs on, 15 secs off is what we like!

Pushing heavy weights just for thrills

My Person Trainer is one of the best
Until it comes to putting me to the test
Then i dont like him very much
He keeps me going when i just want to give up

However he knows my goals
And i trust he will get me there
So for the moment i grin and bare

I will keep going to the Gym
And of course partake in the ocassional Gin :)
