A race of people whose bones tolled like bells when the traveler shed bliss upon their world early each solar cycle.
I watched them with slackjawed edge from my little corner of universe with unholy, godly rhetoric.
Through my scope of foresight I saw their futile attempts at peace, love, war, and all things human.
Warm illusions of grandeur filled their view oftentimes as I stretched my ancient tendons.
I blew staunch breezes and razing storms that shook a world to the core with reckless abandon.
And they returned to me, nothing more than fizzled essence.
Honeyed words, broken culture, and finally, wasted life itself.

With what is yours, do what you fancy.

But forget not what is fiction, and what is firm.

A moderately sized planet,
afloat in a distant spiral galaxy
orbiting an unremarkable star,
has taken the Tardigrazian nations by storm.
For thousands of their star cycles,
they have been capturing the imaginations
of countless people watching from their pods
both Planetside and Satellite alike,
brought together by the light
of the Blue Bead –

The little exoplanet and that defied all reason
and persisted at all cost,
despite itself,
possibly to spite itself.
Millions of lightyears away from our humble empire.

This tiny little dot
and the two-legged folk walking upon it
became something of a cultural phenomenon.
We have become the cheerleaders
for a people likely long passed.
We used to believe they might outlive their star
Go on to visit other planets -
meet their neighbors, like we did.

But recent transmissions from our probes
spell a tragic end on the horizon
for our distant friends,
whom we’ve seen climb down from trees,
invent tools, and writing, and cities, and more
but they never stopped at a reasonable spot.

No amount self-inflicted suffering
they brought in the name
of that momentum would stop them.
Progress, and the comfort that comes with it,
being not unlike an intoxicant for these people.
Addicts will always justify the means.

Their world has rapidly grown warmer
in the time we’ve been observing them.
Soon it will be outside the narrow window
in which they can reasonably survive.

We watched, screaming at our screens,
"The fuel - it’s the fuel causing the rise!!"
They’d gone this long, burning the dead
and expected no consequence.
It's not their fault they’re so short-sighted
It's how they evolved.
A mere hundred years or so,
that’s the lifetime of these feeble creatures
Hardly enough to gain wisdom,
let alone pass it down.

Nevertheless, they lived, they loved,
and they thrived.
Surpassing even the most generous
of our expectations.
Against all odds, they learned, and they grew.
Eventually, we did see the brightest of them
realize their jeopardy and speak the truth.
Just in time, they would unite as they did
so many times before
…or so we thought.

Instead, they fought more.
Even on the edge of extinction,
they dig their trenches,
and they pick their sides.
The great imaginations
that helped them build the world
now affixing them in rigid fictions
of their own making
Unable to see beyond
these preconceived limitations.

It feels, now more than ever,
as though we’re seeing the
final seasons of the Blue Bead.
The fall of a beloved people.
Who will never know
the billions of lives they’ve touched
in the brief time we’ve gotten
to share with them.

But then, they have surprised us
countless times before.
Perhaps they will again.

Something lives deep in our bones,
dark matter only observable in the forming and crashing of galaxies,
solar storms only threatening to debilitate at certain times
Eclipsing moon throwing an inky curving blight across moments
You are afraid that my shadows will take me violently from you
kicking and fighting into the vast nothing that waits under a fragile skin
Coldness seeping into every cell, ships without fuel, the lights going dark in the sky
And I have been making my peace with this every day
Storing up every last dimming of lights and ceremony of routine like an astronaut’s last day planetside

imprinting your skin on my mine until I don’t have my own fingerprints any more
Trying to fit all of you in my arms, but how can anything so wonderful be fit in something so flimsy?

The shadow that mocks me most is not mine
I see it in the corner of the things you
say only when you think no one is watching
4 shots of tequila in
It is defeatism
It is I Will Never Be Good
So Why Even Try
I Will Never Say It Right So
Why Even Try
It is thinking of train tracks and freeways and loaded guns as escape routes
And it scares me just as much as hypoglycemic brain death and diabetes scares you.
And I wonder -- Trying to reach you but only getting static interference - will this solar storm pass?
If I embark on a rescue mission will my gravity send you spiraling out of control or bring you back home?

My shadow can wear a monitor
can have a leash

The vastness of space does not scare me because I can carry my space station home with me, spacewalk with you tethered
As long as I have you, I can feel safe from my shadow.

Holding on in desperation
I cannot save you.
You will slip through my arms like sand
