He tells me of his problems.
His job, his girlfriend, his friends, his home
life.
And I nod and I listen.
And I interject sometimes with a cliché or a suggestion, with as much compassion as I can summon.
And he sighs
and takes a long drag from his cigarette, and paws the ground with his Nikes, and hands me the can of beer we are sharing.
And he inhales
                             deeply
as though the air itself can fumigate the scribbles crisscrossing his skull
and with a wisp of smoke
he starts to say something
I don’t know what but
instead, he
                      pauses
in mid-breath
and he turns and looks at me
with sad eyes
But how are
                        you
he says.
And I pause
just
       long
               enough.

Just long enough for me to look around and sigh;
just long enough for the American Spirits between our fingers to smolder
and for me to weigh the pounder of flat Tecate in my other hand;

just long enough for an overripe lemon to drop
or for a moon flower to blossom
or for a pair of black wings to beat back the wind
or for a bead of dew to skate down a blade of grass;

just long enough for the streak of a lone meteorite to span the sky;

or just long enough for our bones to vibrate in time with the rattle and sizzle and sputter of spraycans in the dark streets behind us
or for the clarion anguish of a million and more homeless to be drowned out by the wail of one sole siren;

I pause
and the world
                           persists.

the earth lurches its creaking bulk sunward for one more day
and the dawn establishes its circumference like a gold aurora;

the desert wind whips down the slopes of Hollywood Hills, past the observatory and Mount Olympus and down Sunset
and its hot dust scours the sidewalk and and slams into our bared and chattering teeth;

And I feel Brian edge

closer to me
concerned
but I have no
                          sense.

The fuming crescendo of space pulses in my head.
My heart is gored through and through by a billion billion whistling neutrinos.
An avalanche of fire from the hills and an inexorable nimbus of smoke advancing on this scatterplot city, apocalyptic-like.

And Brian feels
it now
            too.

A stifled convulsion of thunder.
A muffled ignition of time.
This
         city
an explosion and implosion, expansion and contraction, all thermite and naphtha in its nucleosynthesis, fission and fusion simultaneous;

this pause
just
       long
               enough

for a thousand people or more to grasp for a final breath, their gaping mouths in awe of the energy of one moment;
for this dying
                           place
antenna of flesh and metal, to transmit its final static into the boiling background of the universe until its spiral arms flail no more.

And I contemplate the effect of gravity on a ghost
and the time it takes for the geology of the self to schism
and the fault line in my soul to displace
and the resultant tremors to ripple
through my body and into my epicentered eyes

but I already
                          know
and so does Brian.

He wraps me in his arms
until my trembles subside
and I think
I have paused
just
       long
               enough

to learn the meaning of friend.

Love's light shines through the night;
it washes me clean.

I am born of sunrise; every single ray.
Every living day has lived through me.

My morning; explosively glorious.
My noon; sustaining and vibrant.

It is here...
Here, in my gold-drenched mid afternoon glory,
I see...
I see how wonderfully consuming my sunset will be.

Our rays are eternal...

Come with me, I’ll show you where
The wonders sparkle beguiling blessings
Arousing perceptions of gratitude innate
To heedless humans in lack of deceptions.

Irrefutable eternal verities unfolding
Elegantly before disallowing eyes
On the expanding canvas made of space
Moulding elements of plasmatic grace.

Wind back the hands of time with me to witness
The emergence of the first and most abundant substance,
Hydrogen out of recombination epoch
Finely orchestrated by physical laws to form and fuse in stars.

Stellar nucleosynthesis where nuclear reactions
Are boons in disguise for new combinations
To bear lithium, carbon, neon, oxygen, iron,
The entirety of the essentials on the periodic table.

Indulge with me in the mesmerising marvel
Of watching those incandescent stars go supernova,
Their shock wave thrusting silver and golden nuggets
Throughout infinity creating planets.

Now return to Earth with me and look around,
At the stars’ debris under your feet, feel the ground.
Take this glass of water, a cocktail of hydrogen
And oxygen, breath in! Gaze at all that exists.

Stare at yourself, made of trillions of cells,
Nourish the awareness that you are part
Of the bewildering opus yearning for you
To live your life and honour with consciousness

The wonders sparkling beguiling blessings.

In the heliopause
Where the suns magnetic field stops
Between the stars
Man has no cause
Where the solar winds drop
Away from the heliosphere
In a universe so cold
Interstellar space grows
In matters of gases, ionic & atomic
Wearing molecular masks
Cosmic rays blasts
Intergalactic space
Where it's safe from human trash
Primordial nucleosynthesis
Produce nuclei
Without hate without race
Bigs bang
unstoppable isotopes
In particle rains
In the heliopause
I had a dream
Where peace was
Radiating in a radiation
Far from us
Where transient astronomical events
Occur in evolutionary stages
Of massive stardust
Where there is no Hollywood
And progenitors accretion
Form the art
There is a space
Interstellar
Without a human face
To bring it to ruin

are you displacement but missing a delta
no- no, that’s not quite it, that’s cheap
and kind of ******. and i know you would much
prefer a period 400 years ago. so let me court you
according to the etiquette of those times
because in the infancy of this universe,
protons found electrons and made everything
from the way carbon monoxide and dihydrogen molecules
condense together in the dark to form stars, to form us, to form love
to the r-process nucleosynthesis that created most
of humanity’s favourite group-11 transition metal
through neutron stars colliding in a death spiral
gravity marrying their cores in suicide and rebirth
and that’s why i’d propose to you with a gold ring because
i’d like to cut us up, my anatomy is good and my scalpel hand is better
knit our arteries together, imitation of a binary star merger
and i’d call you a supermassive blackhole because
i’m inexorably drawn to you, swept up in the tempest of your love
because your smile shines brighter than the accretion disk
because the arrow of time snaps in half when we’re together
and i wish time dilation would occur like we’re in a singularity
because all the time in the world is still not enough when i am
selfish like this, when i have stardust condensed into soul in my hands
the flickering of my heart when you look at me like that. when the taste of you
lingers on my mouth, when all i can think about is becoming anchored
around the way your fingers fly across that harpsichord, the softness
in your devotion. so what i’m trying to say is that
0110100101101100011011110111011001100101011110010110111101110101
and i’m not quite poetic enough for a musician like you but i have a telescope for the stars in your eyes.
