In times of clarity, or perhaps
Moments of weakness
(Depending on one's perspective)
My greatest fear, I think,
Is that of dying without achieving
Anything worthy of mention.

The idea of being so ordinary
That your death
(or rather, your life)
Will be rapidly evaporated
from the earth's memory
Like light rain on a molten tarmac afternoon.

But you, at least on a mentally strong day,
Delude yourself with bursts of creativity:
Poetry, film, ideas of grandeur,
All of which persuade you that either
You will not die for a long time,
Or you will someday soon achieve.

This thought is comforting
And all is well.

Until one day you are having
A particularly busy teaching day,
And you rush to the usual spot
To grab a regular taste of Dublin life,
And order your chicken fillet roll:
Lifeblood of an Irish working-man's lunch,
And you eat while you walk -
Both briskly to save time before
Rejoining the rich children.

And the slobbering mouthful of
Delightful chicken baguette
Casts taco sauce from its grasp,
And dribbles down your pubey beard.

You stop and take a finger to it,
Knowing full well that the damage is
Done and that those hairs will grip
To the smell of taco sauce until
The drain tastes their defeat after
A particularly overzealous shower.

And it is in that moment,
With finger and beard stained with
The orange-tinged blood of a chicken fillet roll,
That your ordinariness and worthlessness become apparent
And it destroys you...
Because you always thought taco sauce was spicy.

At the crack of dawn the city is slowly waking up,
walking through these big streets, the cold breeze has become my friend
A beautiful scenery is in front of me, like a living painting, I’m amazed by this city
I have to stop in order to capture those precious moments
My heart is filled with joy, and in my ear a cheerful song is playing

I don’t want it to stop, I want to live here forever!
Following the same path every morning,
This precious path where I’m surrounded by all kind of people
I can hear this beautiful language spoken through the streets
The liffey river is waving at me, I’m almost there,
Finally, I have reached it, Trinity College
Towards the front gate, I have to press pause
Students are rushing  around me, but I stand still
Time stops for a brief moment
Taking a deep breath, it is now my turn to run through the buildings

At last, I belong somewhere…
I hope to see you again, beautiful Dublin, you gave me so much
It is a goodbye for now

The bluest eyes I've ever seen
Are just now lying next to me
The one with whom my future lies
Or would, if not due to the distance
The most in love I've ever been
With the one who's lying next to me
I wonder about the reasons why
I failed to realise this sooner

My happiness is the irish boy who's next to me
The one to whom I have to say goodbye
Again, for the millionth time
Only this time I know he's what I want
What I need;
To be his girl, and only his
He lies asleep right next to me
I whisper "I love you"s I'm too afraid to say
Cause what's the point? He knows
I'm sure he knows
The way I'm lost into his eyes, any fool can see
The way I shiver from his touch

The only one I'll ever want
He's perfect, if only he would know
If only he could see
The amazing person that he is
And not deny it when I tell him so
If only he could know
Just how much I want to say "yes", leave it all behind and be with him
Instead of on my own so many miles away
The miles that made us strangers for 2 years
Until we weren't anymore, we fell right back to where we were
The smiles and winks and cigarettes
And late talks and cheeky looks and happy sighs
And music in the background while we lie
Into each other, once again

I'll be back, sure enough
You'll greet me again with open arms
But when? For how long?
This goodbye will **** me
The way the others never did
But I'll be back, and I'll go through this torment once again
Because you're worth it. You're the only person that is worth it.

Dublin's now my home, my home is where you are
It's crystal clear
As clear as anything has been

I'm his lucky strike,
He's my lucky (crushed) penny.
Just how much he changed my life, he'll never know
"I found my treasure in you", he sings
I did, I did
