Fresh Sorrow
niamh Feb 2016
Come now darkened night,
Shine your saturated light
Upon my nightmares.

Stars have no reply
For the wherefore and the why
Within my nightmares.

Dawn now dries my tears
But it cannot ease the fears
Of living nightmares.

He is here no more,
Locked behind a keyless door.
Unending nightmare.

Of fresh dreams
And blessing the kiss

It shakes me to the core
This breathtaking desire
Passion never felt before

I never thought to soar
On this feeling you inspire
It shakes me to the core

I crave it all the more
As it sets my soul on fire
Passion never felt before

Electricity outpours
Fingers touching this live wire
It shakes me to the core

A ****** rapport
That cannot be acquired
Passion never felt before

And as we explore
I set my heart upon the pyre
It shakes me to the core
Passion never felt before

Shoulders
niamh Oct 2015
The shoulders that soaked young tears,
A place to hide from childish fears.
Once so straight and proud and high,
Cruelly stooped as the years marched by.
Still the strongest shoulders ever known,
Still the perfect cradle for a daughter now grown.

Velvet drops
niamh Sep 2015
The velvet drops fall
        Erasing time,
             Creating space,
Sweeping memories
Along dust filled lanes.
A shrill whistle
          On a deserted street.
The kicking of a ball
That has already rolled away.
A balloon
           Slipping
From trembling fingers,
            Shrinking from sight,
Seeing more
Than ever before.
The velvet drops fall.
And the woman
            Still dances
Barefoot in the rain.

Dementia
niamh Jul 2015
She lives with
The ghosts of yesterday,
Reliving painful memories
Like a sadistic
Groundhog day.
The awful irony
Of taking care
Of her body all these years,
When her mind was
Planning a revolt.
Is she still in there,
The woman I used to know,
Struggling to get out?
Screaming at the injustice
Of her situation?
Banging on the bars
Of her rotting mind?
The very thought
That could be true
Is the saddest thing
Of all.

The Beautiful Picture
niamh Sep 2015
The broken pieces
Of the beautiful picture
Lay scattered around,
Fragments of history
Waiting to draw blood.
They were put back together
Over time immeasurable
And with a pain unmatched.
The scene was
Undoubtedly altered,
But the picture was
No less beautiful.
And those who had
Never seen it before,
Would never know the difference.

The night is here again
I taste it on my tongue.
Sweet starlight burst
With an undertone of pain.
I wallow in my sorrow
And drown in selfish thoughts.
The sun's a distant memory
Of a never seen tomorrow.
Fill the brittle glass,
Bitter tears of regret.
Hold the memories close,
Living dead in the past.

Naked before my eyes.

Your unblemished beauty
Unchanged but never the same.

Majestic in your unerring humility.
A constant in a tumultous world.

And wear it with pride.

You bring light to the dark.

The gestation of a poem
niamh Jun 2015
An idea conceived in an intense moment of beauty or pain.
A moment of perfect clarity.
We turn our brains to wombs,
To nurture it, protect it,
Know it and love it.
We feed it emotion
And it grows stronger.
When the time is right
We give birth to it
Through tears sweat and blood
Or pure tranquility.
And we love it,
On our own or alongside others.
For these are our babies

A disease
That rots from the inside
Out.
Turns a beautiful
Smile
Into a poisonous sneer.
Makes foes
Out of
Reluctant friends
And turns
Towers of strength
To crumbling ruins.
Flows through your

Like poison,
And seeps from

To taint everything
Around you
With shades
Of virulent green.
A useless emotion
That makes you wish
You couldn't

The truck horns blared
And the choir sang.
But none so deafening
As the silence
Of the empty seat

Of missed trains and lost loves,
Lonely nights and lost lives.
Mellow notes tell a bitter tale,
Familiar,

I feel the needle scratch
Under my skin.

And let it burn away
Until the embers bite my skin.
Drop it in the ashtray,

The smoke got in my eyes.

A Town Called Despair
niamh Jul 2015
A merry, mirthful clown,
I came upon a town
Where the stench of despair
Hung heavy in the air
And the ghosts within the town
Wandered aimlessly around
******* dry the joy of others
Delivered with the kiss of lovers.
No laughter can be heard
Or the trilling of the birds,
Only the silence of the tomb
In this ugly, poisonous womb,
Giving birth to fear and sorrow
With no hope of a tomorrow,
Spreading illness and infection
Eradicating all affection.
And though I long to leave,
I am granted no reprieve.
A sad and lonely clown
I cannot leave this town.
The despair of others can so easily drag you down
