Tennessee Rising
PERTINAX Apr 2016
I'm a mountain man
Far from my range
Surrounded by seemingly endless
Flat plains of sugar sand beaches
Here I am alone
So out of place
While all the waves keep crashing
Reminding me of a Blue Ridge song
Calling my soul farther north
To a place where my hearts match
Is beating along
To the melody
Of high winds
And granite peaks
So I sit knowingly
Appraising the horizon
As I miss my home
In Tennessee Rising

Falling Diamonds
PERTINAX Apr 2016
As the diamonds fall
The night they fill
Threatening the darkness
The light their thrill
Seemingly endless
These stars do fall
Together they are balancing
The weight of it all
Harmoniously they plummet
Throughout the sky
Revealing the reason
That their heavens cry
Heedless of the night
These diamonds do shine
Moving ever toward
Their grand design
Broken and beaten
These stars be true
As the diamonds do fall
Ive fallen for you

Wind Moan
PERTINAX Apr 2016
The way the wind moans
Prose a story
Of life lessons learned
Minus love and its glory

Within this wind
Sadness resides
A remainder of madness
Not even the wind can hide

Angered by its loss
Ashamed to say
The reason the wind moans
Blowing away

Ellipses
PERTINAX Apr 2016
Time is past due for you to be you.
Do not let the clock tell you how to.
Instead, tell the clock:
"I will be I, you can be two."
Second..'s before the third is due.
...
Ellipses.

Understanding 'K'now
PERTINAX Apr 2016
Minds claim to know that which is not.
Foundations... they are broken and they rot.
From the rubble is found a truth stronger than life;
To understand that knowing is nothing but
Standing on our understanding.
Now we 'K'now
My first poem.

Hard Words
PERTINAX Apr 2016
These words I write in steel
For I fear living within a world
Bound between loosely knit hallows
Perpetuated by the lonesome crinkling
Of a paper wrought in a sleeve of gold and silver
As sweetly as the soft waxing of a grand moon
Swaying amongst the throes of light
Darkened by the sickening influx
Of overindulgence creeping and undulating
Ever towards my secrets wrapped in steel
The truth can be hard to write; hard like steel.

Fall Tragedy
PERTINAX Apr 2016
We are all free falling
Yet never really free
Inside and out
This fall tragedy
We reach for help
But find no footing
Spinning around
Our stomachs churning
Endless is this abyss
Tumbling away
Our minds begin to slip
Running astray
In this place
Time has no bearing
Yet a light does shine
A pinpoint in the black
Forever a way of knowing
The path to get back
In our struggle to grip
That ever expanding gray
My solution for you is simple
Stop running away
Do not run away from responsibility, run towards it.

Becoming Not
PERTINAX Apr 2016
I am Becoming Not.
Wasting away with the singular,
Empowering, He, the titular
Man of Wisdom.
Thence denouncing the God of Reason
As Thy transformation rip Thee
To pieces of never ending conformity.
Abandoning the mind,
Raising the soul,
Through which, the pain of loss,
Drives He to convince,
Conceive, and deceive
The prior aspirations
That once supported
The search for understanding
Now Thy sit and wonder
What is most important?
Not Becoming?
Or Becoming Not?
Tell me which is more important.

Natures Art
PERTINAX Apr 2016
It's the symbolism of nature
That defines us
It speaks a loud truth
That only the blind refuse to see
The balance of life
And its complexity
Such as our binary coupling
Like an algebraic formula
Which cannot exist
Absent the many variables
Restricting the reflexivity
Of emotions that do not adhere
To our everyday functionality
Systematically understanding
Love is the value of the whole
While appreciating the part

Forged in Fire
PERTINAX Apr 2016
========================
Today my brain is addled
Fogged by memories
Forged in fire
Searing the madness
That quenches the sadness
Of a life absent control
And a love present in soul
Yet steam continues to rise
As my eyes struggle to focus
My vision of you is hardened
Into a sharpened blade
Given deadly purpose
For this reason
You tower above all others
Providing me the means
To erase my haze
Simultaneously
Illuminating the night
So we might wield the day

Entropic Thermodynamics
PERTINAX Apr 2016
Entropy is increasing
Slowly reducing order to disorder
Like all things must
As confirmed by thermodynamics
And witnessed by aging
To the point where all things
Weather,
Wither,
Die.
==============================
Alive.
Love,
Loss,
Is the malady of experience;
A means to interpret energy
Such that
Whatever choices
You must face
The first law is final:

One conversion
No waste

The Calm Before the Shot
PERTINAX Apr 2016
The shell falls
Following the boom
Where everything is still in motion
Like a whispy smoke trail
Rising steadily from an iron chamber
Or the shock received from an expected impact
That brings attention to the action
Down the sights
As a slight ringing bombards the senses
Into a state of catatonic ambiguation
It becomes clear that the target set
Is wholly unaffected
By the decision to shoot
In turn
Reducing the validity of the attempt
Yet it is not a wasted round
But grounds to attempt another shot
And another
Until the bullet hits the mark
Which is metaphorically
Your heart
===============================
Failure is not an option
So we try
Try again

The Moral Paradox
PERTINAX Apr 2016
The symmetry of the soul is lost on me
There are no straight lines between
Right and wrong
It is asymmetry
That leads me to conclude
Morality exists above the laws
Attainable only to the few that understand
Truth is a prelude
Or a lovely ode
Dissonant in its ever changing nature
To the point that it alludes
Even the holiest codes
As I sit here on my throne
And consider this crooked reality
Never to be certain
Philosophy is my home
==============================
It is through uncertainty
Where we certainly
Feel alive enough
To ask the question
Why?

Demonic Confession
PERTINAX Apr 2016
We all have our demons
That we attempt to bury
In the depths of purgatory
But like these sins
The path to cleanliness
Of the soul
Requires us to confront
Each individual devil
On that sanctimonious ground
Where every decision
Is laid out in well ordered
Pews
Both chronologically
And systematically
Arranged
So that each ghoul
Sits and stares at you
Silently reminiscent
As we ponder their ghosts

Love in Light
PERTINAX Apr 2016
Although I remember
The first time we met
Its like a dream
That parallels into an alternate
Reality
Starting fresh with every morning
Call of the midnight whippoorwill
Announcing the coming
Of a red sky sunrise
Revealing your beauty
In magnificence
And splendor
That only the heavens may hope
To rival

Yet you are more than a deity
You possess a characteristic
Even the moon cannot equate
Like a stone made up
From a myriad of colors
But only presenting gray
Such that
A midnight eclipse
Pales in comparison
To your touch
========================
Then the memory returns
As night becomes day
I see you
My love in light
Is here to stay

Spine of the World
PERTINAX Apr 2016
The dissonant chime rolled over the distant mountains
.
A chain peaked and capped in the reflective white sheen of never-dying ice
.
Reverberating to the tune of loneliness in a sensual duet between the wind
.
Where every gust unites the pallette into such a beautiful harmony
.
That the range can't help but to announce it's existence to the world
.
In cadence like a sweet symphony tuning to the pitch of A
...
Before the start of the first movement
...
The Earth begins to tremble
...
In ode to the Spine of the World

H to the O
PERTINAX Apr 2016
The wave breaks loose
Upon its apex
Sending a simmering shower of sparkles
Racing down its arching crest
Like a woman in the throws of passion
Lost within this flow of action
Is the hydrogen particles
Bonded to oxygen
Providing the H to the O
And the 2 to the two
Water is formed
A covalent brew

The Saboteur
PERTINAX Apr 2016
As the cannon erupts
The death knell tolls
Signaling the end of the war
Within myself
============================
For by sheer proximity
I am unable to maintain
A loving focus
No matter how trivial the pain
My weapon is set to automatic
Never stopping to reload
Ignoring every misfire
Intending to be the hero
Of one scarred with wear
Wary of the burdens that weaken
Even the greatest of men
So I take flight
When normalcy arrives
Terrified of the notions
Where memories reside
Preferable to heaven
And the wings upon which
Angel's fly
For it hath become demonic
Lamenting in it's path
Through death and destruction
A heart protecting gas mask
That chokes and restrains
The natural enmity
Between wants and needs
Which steadily reigns my dreams
Into focus
Before I can corrupt your inherent Beauty
With anger and greed
============================
Some people never leave the battlefield
Others just bring it home with them
============================
We are constant combatants
In a war that cannot be won
============================
The saboteur
Of the one
We are our greatest enemies.

His Purgatory
PERTINAX Apr 2016
"What have I done?"
He asked of the darkness
"The light has abandoned me"

"You have broken your covenant with morality"
"There is no light for those whom lie to themselves"

That voice...
Emanating from the pitch
Rolling ink igniting his mind
No control...

"What is broken is me!"
"Morality hath forsaken my heart and sent me to a love I cannot handle"

Three chimes...
It was the only warning he had
Before his mind became that of coal
No sight...

"You have failed yourself and for that I have no pity"
"Those who wear masks suffer the wrath of absence"

Then nothing...
There was no sound, no light, no dark
All fell into a casual monotony
His purgatory...

— The End —
