Like an old friend inviting you to come inside.
Familiar. Comforting.
It will grasp you in its arms and hold you close;
And when you're ready to leave, it wont let you go.
You will beg and plead to be happy,
and it will put up a fight.
It will make you think that the only way to escape it is to take your own life.
If you are lucky, you can break free;
and it will sit and watch you from afar.
Calling your name.
Welcoming you back into it's arms.
It will intrude your thoughts.
Make you think you are worthless.
That you're better off dead.
Just keep telling yourself that it's all in your head.
Keep moving. You will get far.
Depression is not who you are.
DISCLAIMER: This is only from my personal point of view and how my battle with depression has been. Even though I am trying to recover, the battle gets very difficult for me sometimes and I have to remind myself that I am not my mental illness. My mental illness does not define me.
You compared yourself to a bird and me a cage
I hold you back
"Don't leave, don't leave
You need not be free
I don't want to risk losing you
So stay here, please sing with me"

except

You are not a bird, and I am not a cage

I was your blanket on a cold night
I was the cast on your broken leg
I was the home cooked meal after months away from home

Just because I limited, held you back, because

I put the cork in your wine bottle after a glass too many
After days of intoxication
I asked you to consider kindness when you wanted vengeance
After a brief altercation
I pushed you to rest after days and days of exhaustion
After you snapped with agitation

I pull you away from self destruction, quiet enemies that bring corruption
You don't want care, you want an accomplice.
You don't want change on your own terms
You don't want change at all

The caged bird does not sing

So what's your excuse?
one day you will
find a girl who will scoop you whole
she will expand her arms knowing the giant that you are
and not feel tired holding it
she will tame the seas inside of you,
and hush the demon that is in you
one day
you will
find a girl who will nurture you true
she will bend low knowing **** well the hobbit that you are
and not feel little standing beside it
she will tuck your hair
out of your face
and say
she is staying
she is staying
you are not something for her to leave
and she will make a bed out of you
knowing she can make a throne out of someone new
but
she will make
a tiny
lovely warm bed
out of you
and she'll stay
she'll stay

don't leave her
