Proximity

Your body heat is heightened by the blankets over our bodies in attempts to keep out winter's chill,
Yet the heat doesn't melt the look in our eyes when we go through the steps we've threaded so long that the footprints are permanently embedded on the path that led to "us"-

"I love you" is so soft I can't heart it,
And the embraces so short I forget they happened.

Falling asleep next to you means we are close,
But underneath these covers also lies a truth between us that not even skin upon skin could break through;

Proximity means nothing when hearts are far and eyes see through.
However close we are won't make up for it because proximity means nothing when the only time we are close is when I'm physically next to you.

We’re quick to blame those that break our hearts,
Railing against lovers for our misfortunes,
Consigning them to hell and so forth,

When in reality,
Our oft exhausted and defeated transgressors
Serve merely as the catalyst for the internal destruction that follows

For no one impacts your emotional wellbeing as much as you,
And you birth your demons, your pain,
After ‘us’ is no more,
There is just you and your head,
An entity far more dangerous than any borne of flesh and blood

Do not judge those that hurt you,
For they are as foolish and human as you,
And remember that though
Love may linger and torment,
It is a reminder of what your heart can do,
When it’s met its match

There is a reason for the fifth of gin in the coffee
There was a reason, but I've forgotten

A wish for heat to meld parts back together
I can hear you talking through the floors
to all your friends
and ex lovers

I can hear you singing along to nothing in the shower
The problem lies not within you
but in me

There are four words better than
I love you
And those are

Emily
shone through the curtains like milk spilling from a bottle
the sun gave me light in the gloom morning

and she shone from that pale peach sky
whispering "you can do today"

so i got out of bed with cracking knees and crusty eyes
drank my bitter coffee pretending it tasted alright

i met my own eyes in the mirror
and said to myself "you can do today"

I don't want to leave
our limb-locked warmth in our sheets,
but the day calls us.
