i can
never
sleep...
or
maybe i'm
never
in truth
awake

my mason jar heart,
chipped, cracked, stained with wine,
has often been filled
with tears for those gone,
romantic picnics,
porch evenings on
swings or rocking chairs,
too many secrets,
but great memories.

your mouth is a wristwatch. i stare
impatiently. noticing strange things,
folding the corners of my page-wanting fingers towards you.
the breaths taken
say so much about the situation.
killing children in other counties
while we wait
              _
my leftovers get shoved behind your
seat.
it takes a moment to stabilize.

Mud, whiskey, death
and bad debts, the river's
high water, mysterious birds
flying south disappearing
like a youngest daughter,
no good men, bad intentions,
changing seasons, unexplained
pains, all of these are reasons
I've seen good women weeping
after the hardest rains came.

I left the horizons
  for fear I would miss
    the evening stars set there
      so if your horizon sinks
        to the abyss
mine are all here for us both to share.

I captured the starlight
  to jewel my eyes
and dazzle the folks who'd see,
      but should your eyes tire
        of empty skies
I'll glitter them fain with stars for thee.

Sylvia Plath
Better that every fiber crack
and fury make head,
blood drenching vivid
couch, carpet, floor
and the snake-figured almanac
vouching you are
a million green counties from here,

than to sit mute, twitching so
under prickling stars,
with stare, with curse
blackening the time
goodbyes were said, trains let go,
and I, great magnanimous fool, thus wrenched from
my one kingdom.
