as good as it ever gets

i have nothing left except my breath
a sunset means another night to obsess
we are all only vessels in distress
sending out our best S.O.S

i ask "in death can i progress"?
can the dead truly be heavenly blessed?
will i pass the test without regrets?
or is this as good as it ever gets?

I know, I have ended other poems with the same line.

community

i tried to stay true to the unity
tuned to every opportunity
i found my ruins in the mutiny
loose stone of the community

such a crude and brutal fluency
the futile fruits of lunacy
the pulled roots of my truancy
grew away from my community

I am submitting this in a poetry contest. The theme must be "community". Ten prizes of 500 dollars. Somehow, I just don't think I will win. Lol.

i stay drunk all the time
on sweet berry wine
from the fruit of sublime
on the trees and the vine

i get high every day
by the way of the blaze
that's just my way
to break through the haze

with these ways of mine
all I need is a dime

up above and down below
there are forces of our control
waiting for strength or weakness to show
then you will reap the seeds you sow

if you choose down below
then hell will be your fate
if you choose up above
heavenly gates will await

there's a battle for your soul
every weakness and strength they know
only you can choose which way to go
