Skimming and scanning
the grammar of the riverbank’s
brown leaf, new shoot syntax
a bold type wren,
like the old bouncing ball of singalongs,
led my eye to read the waterline
and yet I still couldn’t discern
if smiles or tears were written
while the branch tips still scribed

Life is a game.
Love vs Lust
Are you a narcissist? Or an optimist?
This seems like a one way street.
Maybe I can find an off ramp.

Game of Life is one we all play.
Do you like the people you see?
Do you Lust after them?
Do you love after them?
All you know is you are attracted.

Like two magnets, gravity pulled us together.
Do you like the one you see?
Or would you rather wait and be?
That spark is felt deep.
There's a fire growing inside of me.

Years from now when it seems like it's about to fade.
Just wait, baby.
It will come back in trade.
Look at you, standing next to me.
All I can think is "God, you're so attractive to me.

I say I'm
not looking
for love but
I'm looking
I'm catching
cold glances
from eyes filled
with the weight of
sorrow been cast in gold
My purposeful fingers
reach up for money from
the gutters, this,
is just what I'm told.
Enter my ears,
enter my eyes,
enter my skin,
into my lungs.
I'm not breathing
oxygen if I exhale
byproduct. I'm out
of luck, won't press it.
I'm out of reason in
speech. Beyond
preventable death.
Regret, turned to
malice. Chest
compression. I
could have been
a good person.
What value in gold,
if I have you?
Devin Ortiz May 2017
May
I tried crawling out mind
Eyes following the morning wrens
But that ****** screaming
They are so cheerful, hopping along the fence
Why are thoughts so loud today?
Run to the shade little birds, today's a scorcher

Heat stroke, but its only May!
Scatter now, fly away with any tune.
A cool glass of water, I do feel better.
Sing away, 10 wings flutter, the harmony
Something still doesn't seem quite right.
Shadows in the wind, feathered friends.
LOOK!

Hop hop hop hide
         Hop stare,

LOOK!

He's gone,
         Hop hop,
                  hop hop, hunt!

Betwixt the shrub and hubabubb
'neath bracken's shadowed scowl
came a Wren pop-hopping when
arrested by a yowl

He spied another grovely bird
chattering with the gloom
realising it had been observed
it screeked with spittled spume

Stay back, stay back
alack, alack
I've nothing left to give
and should you shake the life from me
unhappy you shall live

Like him the grovely had a one leg
and too the veshy eye
and when he flexed his deeker wings
he knew this bird must die.

The unctuous Wren popped back and forth
as did the groveley bird
and there they stood 'twix shrub and earth
exchanging not a word.

Just this once I'll let you go
announced the cautious Wren
he turned his fractious beak to blow
and was never seen again.
A timid bird encounters his own reflection
