On my bookshelf sits a cup of cigarettes,
Menthols-
But I’m not a smoker.
Every now and then I pull out my lighter
Take a few drags
And curse at myself for letting go once again-
But I’m not a smoker.
And it’s not an addiction.
It’s simply lost willpower
Letting myself drop the promises I make to myself
To sit and smoke a few
Taste the burnt mint roll across my tongue-
But I’m not a smoker.
I always buy a new pack
When I notice the cup running low,
Never let it empty completely
That would mean I smoke-
But I'm not a smoker.

I’ve learned how to bike
Learned how to write
And I also learned how to cook
Where are you?

I’ve mastered drawing
I’ve finished high school
I’ve been practicing music
Where are you?

I’ve got into college
Lots of friends, lots of enemies
One even became my boyfriend
Where are you?

I worked double shift
My grades are failing
And my boyfriend cheated on me
Where are you?

I’m now alone
Thinking in this dark room,
Filled with doubt and fear,
Still wondering
Where are you?

I just want you to know
This three word question
Only means one thing

I wish you were here.
How come you never looked back?
I can only look through your eyes
When I look to your words.

I didn't see the forecast
The one that predicted my blank slate
I thought it would look different
I thought it would follow a life filled with family, children, memories
I woke up one morning
An empty space in the bed
A calendar free of appointments
An unexpected ache in my soul
A blank slate
