If I could trace
Rainbows through the rain
To the golden ***
Of treasure at the end,
I'd trace a thousand
And bring the gold to you.

If I could meld
The elements water and fire
Into a blanket of energy
That would keep you
Cool and warm--
Whatever you need--I would.

If I could sing
The songs of your dreams
And wishes and fantasies,
And somehow sing them
Into reality, I'd sing
From sunrise to sunset.

If I could build
A home from scratch
With all the things you love
And need and want,
I'd measure and hammer and saw
And create that space for you.

If I could do even one thing
That would make you smile,
Make your heart soar above
All the pain and sorrow and death
You face every day,
I would do it a thousand times.

But I am only human
And my strength is not much.
I cannot trace rainbows
Or meld elements or even sing.
And though I've swung a hammer,
The house would be shambly.

So all I can do is one thing--
One thing to lift you up
And make you laugh and smile--
I can tell you with all my heart
That no matter what happens
You are loved,
*A thousand times and more.
