we fell in love and every night,
before we went to sleep,
you'd ask me if I'd stay with you forever.
and you knew I’d say yes
but I guess you wanted
a vocal contract.

we fell in love, but you stopped asking
whether I’d be there forever.
relieved, at first, I thought you had moved on
from separation anxiety,

but then your texts and calls and visits
to my house
for movie nights
grew shorter until they disappeared

and I asked you if you'd stay with me forever
and you said nothing
and turned off your phone,
rolled over on your bed,
closed your eyes
and fell asleep,

but I stay awake
because you forgot
to say goodnight
