The sparkle in your eyes
is the shadowy sky
that flames from
dark blue to easy orange hues,
the stars that burn
with diamond points
powerfully pushing out,
the space that turns,
your galaxies spiraling
into short stories
and our lives
into even tinier
minuets
that we can dance to.

Till, our bodies do
what they were always
going to have to do.
Stardust sparkles and crumbles
while eternity devours
the basic building blocks of life.
Black holes bend, pull, and swallow
the speeding light

and we hope we may
we hope me might
find our way back in to life.
We dream that our soft bodies
will seed, bleed, and blend into
oncoming generations,
making us immortal as we can be.

The whisper of trees
Can hear earth
The city spreads
The wild displaced
Some species gone
Without a trace
We move along
At such a pace
We lose our world
This human race

A Trasher sits
Upon a rail
In search of bugs
With flirt of tail
Grey-brown body
Curved blackish beak
He will find
The food he seeks
While he rests
So smooth and sleek
I find the wild
I take a peek
Into a world
Where harshness picks
The hardy ones
In desert sticks
As he peers
With yellow eye
He has his place
Twixt earth and sky

My hometown is now a large city.
Many displaced wild animals now
Find a home within the city limits.
Javelina (wild "pigs" which are actually
more closely related to rodents) are now
Commonplace. Coyote run the city in packs. Residents complain. Well. What do
They expect?

I had a wonderful encounter with
A wild creature this morning. This plain
Brown Thrasher sat on the rail of our stairs
For quite a while, looking at me quizzically.
What went through his mind, I wonder?

Hey kid, whatcha doing here
Has it already been a year
Father time is all grown up
2017 I wish you luck

Years gone by to tell the truth
Have been more than a bit rough on you
It's time to pass off the baton
To the new kid on the block

This new kid to come along
We hope to fatten him all up
With the best of everything
All the goodies life can bring

We'll treat this year like no other
Save the baby and bathwater
Keep him around until he's old
Polishing the silver, shining the gold

As every year we hold out hope
That this one's not all that she wrote
Oh and if you don't mind,
One more thing
Will you get the phone...
I think I hear the New Year ring
