Sonnet (Bouts-Rimes)
Chuck Feb 2013
We believe we must be gregarious.
In communal bonds families annoint
One another in a precarious
Need to follow one leader at the point.

Individuals are not relevant.
Momentary solitude makes us run.
In silence we find nothing elegant .
Time to search for innerpeace has begun.

"Oh' Catain, My Captain," cried Walt Whitman.
The captain is dead. There's no one we need.
We don't have to group to stop the hitman.
The single flower's a rose, not a ****.

We, need to be I, hear this confession:
Farewell friends, I am my new obsession.
This is an English Sonnet, but a Bouts-Rimes is a poetry challenge. My 14 rhymed words were a challenge from Rebecca Askew. I also gave her 14 words. It can be any number of rhymed words or written in any form. We decided to heighten the challenge by creating sonnets. It was a challenge but an enjoyable one. How did I do?

Chuck Feb 2015
A bile seeps into the crevis of my soul
Nausea and dyspepsia infest the sinews of my being
Death would be a welcome reprieve from the pain
Then my mind wanders to you
And I dance among the flowers of euphoria

Hero (Villanelle)
Chuck Feb 2013
People will disappoint you
Find your hero within
Confidants are few

Worshiping athletes is through
Trash jerseys in the bin
People will disappoint you

Hero worship is taboo
Celebrities and spin
Confidants are few

Others will lead you askew
Fidelity is thin
People will disappoint you

Parents can lose luster too
Once hero, now has been
Confidants are few

Bid pseudo heroes a dew
Your hero dawns your skin
People will disappoint you
Confidants are few
I don't completely feel this way. I just told myself to write a poem about this subject. I love the Villanelle form.

Code Red
Chuck Jan 2013
Do not utter a syllable
For the reaper lurks at the door
Dim the lights as our eyes are widened
Sit in a desperate, huddled mass
Feel the shivering, helpless creature on the left
Hear my traitorous lungs exhaling, surrendering my position
My heart pounding, screaming at my body
Ordering me to run, to fight, to ****
"Do not go gentle into that good night,"
As Dylan Thomas so elegantly stated
Yet it is not a time for romantic visions of heroism
Beowulf's idealism will not save us here
Sobbing, shivering, ***** stained American Eagle
Sweat drenched Under Amour Tees and hoodies
Feet ironically quivering in red and orange Nike Shocks
A 243 pound lineman blubbering under his breath
He wants his mother, his daddy, his pillow, to go home
Another boy, Darrel, clenches his fists, readies for attack
Cassidy sits silently, emotionless, statuesque, frozen in time
And I . . . What do I do? . . . What do I do?
Do I flinch like Sir Gawain in the face of death?
Or do I . . . . . . What do I do?
God, may I never discover the answer to this evil query
God help us stop the violence consuming innocent children
Render CODE RED obsolete
Yet, CODE RED will parish not
For society feeds on fictional fame
Fifteen minutes that Warhol never could have painted
Now it will be duplicated like so many Campbell's Soup cans
CODE RED    CODE RED    CODE RED   CODE RED
And . . . What will I do?
What will I do?

Sonnet 2: Chaos
Chuck Dec 2013
The forcible torrents rave on, ceaseless
Turmoil spins in a topsy-turvy wave
Bodies in shambles, minds twisted, restless
Drama and crises, emotions we crave
Twerking with the devil, licking the sledge
Morison's snake ride to "The (darkest) End"
Pushing the limits over the damp edge
Following and tweaking the latest trend
Emotional upheaval - rebellion
Creative juices overflow with paint
There is art in every great Hellion
But little ink flows from the mighty saint
Be content in the rich chaos of youth
It's the rains that nurture the seeds of truth

The days play with my emotions
The sun shines momentarily
Followed by rain
Days so hazy and humitity so raw
Lightning can strike without warning
I dare not venture far
From the protection of my domain
Yet, why do I surrender
To forces out of my control?
Tomorrow I will rebel
I refuse to let Mother Nature
Play with my emotions
Like so many women from my past
What's the worse that can happen?
O' but what a way to go!

Magic Moon (children's poem)
Chuck Jan 2013
The moon said to the stars, "May I please dance with you?
Your twinkle steps look so fun to do.
"Moon, who do you think you are?
You're near the Earth, and we traveled so far."

"I know who I am. You should see.
I light the Earth at night. They need me.
But you give off this magic light too.
That's why I really want to dance with you!"

"Yes! We understand what you mean.
All of our dancing create a magical scene.
We discussed it, and you're a friend indeed.
That's why you should always take the lead!"
Took a shot at a children's poem. My dancing daughter was my muse.

Forever Home (Sestina)
Chuck Jan 2013
A square, white, four bedroom, one bath country home
With fourteen kids, parents and much family love
We didn’t have abundance:  fiscally poor
But we had each other:  banked on our family
We shared our victories and or trying pain
We were a modest Scottish Catholic Clan

Isolated, we were not to our immediate clan
Our uncle’s lived within a trot, fifteen in his home
We kids worked and played on the farm without pain
It was an adventurous labor of extended family love
We worked, laughed, cried, and played as a family
In the early years, we young ones were anything but poor

However, in grammar school, we learned the meaning of poor
And materialism and envy, outside our cloistered clan
But together we lived and loved as a close nit family
Sure we had disagreements, not material goods, but a solid home
White paint peeled on the outside, yet inside was painted love
Still, there were poverty jokes, ridicule and masked pain

Every family has strife, baggage, and superfluous pain
Our parents didn’t drink; we had faith, yet fiscally poor
Ole Dad plumbed toilets; Mom slaved in the house, both with love
So we wouldn’t trade riches for our impoverished meager clan
Summer berries to pick, winter sledding, spring kites, and forever home
Kickball games, splashing  in ponds, nature hikes and family

We were not taught to show emotions, hug, not an “I love you family,”
Albeit, an honest, polite, and proud Scottish Clan
The old house was eternally warm; it was our forever home
Until 1999. Dad passed from cancer still money poor
Yet rich in the knowledge of family and that his true pain
Was never saying that word; on his deathbed he whispered “Love”

Though our patriarch was laid to rest, we rose with the word “Love”
Eventually, the house was sold, but always one huge family
Mom spends her days in a retirement home remembering her clan
As time passes and memories fades, it lessens the pain
Of the loss of a noble father, economically poor
Yet with a strong work ethic, church, and love, built a home

Fourteen children now forged fourteen homes on love
Many, still, financially poor, but rich in forever family
Correcting mistakes that caused pain, while perpetuating our clan
Thank you soooo much if you read this Sestina. It is a time-consuming form. I was definitely challenged. This is autobiographical yet set even further in the past. I used old references and a simple language to capture that old country feeling, like the Waltons, for those of you old enough to remember that show.
Thanks again for reading this long Sestina. I hope you enjoyed it. It may be my last.

Dancing Deer
Chuck Sep 2013
What shock, what fright
Galloped through my head tonight
I cruised around a quiet turn
I wasn't alone, I would learn
A deer hopped out to great me
It didn't want to scare or eat me
I had no reason to fret or fear
It was an adorable dancing deer
She leapt on my hood
I screamed as loud as I could
She danced a lively Irish Jig
Kept it short, not real big
Then hopped down, off she went
My mouth and hood, left bent
It was a beautiful dance
Though, I nearly messed my pants
The dance worth one thousand in cash
She stole my heart and wallet, then dashed

For in my heart lurks deserts, lonely drought
Will these rains quench my thirst? My heart has doubt

Baby Food
Chuck Mar 2013
I once read an essay that made perfect sense
It gave an alternative to cure expense

It was a proposal that was quite modest
I wish I'd have thought of it, to be honest

It was from the early eighteenth century
It would empty the full penitentiary

Babies are free until they are at least one
Then they are fat, tender, and ripe in the sun

Parents can sell them to the politicians
They will use them as part of their nutrition

It is a win for everyone, you can tell
After all, we're already going to Hell

Sell the babies for politicians to eat
Use the money for a superfluous treat

We should kindly thank Mr. Jonathan Swift
For solving all our problems with this great gift
Upon rereading Jonathan Swift's satire, "A Modest Proposal."

Mysterious Friends
Chuck Feb 2013
We share our intimate verbiage
Tearful, tortured souls are bared
Ripples of poetry reverberate
Through myths and muse and fears

Who are these mysterious poets
With whom we write and laugh
Some could be different than they claim
A dark catfish in a poet’s guise
Worse, others playing nefarious games

Shall mysterious friends be trusted
We don’t even know genuine names
Yet, I declare, my mysterious friends
Names, ages, and past do not hinder me
We can hide our facts and our faces
Yet poet friends we will truly be

We’ve known people for many years
Spent hours on trivial small talk
We don’t know who they really are
We’ve shared poems in anonymity
Yet we’ve bled more deeply by far

To all mysterious friends, poets one and all
No need to inspect you face to face
To trust you with my naked soul!

We pass on our memories to generations to come
Will we pass on all of our failures, along with triumphs?
Or will we be the omniscient evaluators to filter out pain?

People's victories and defeats spon individuality
The only "sameness" in our lives is that we are all humans
Colorful and beautiful in our smiles and well earned scars

We are "The Givers" of our lives to future generations
Don't hold back! Don't revise. Don't disguise wounds.

Salacious verbiage is trenchant
Verdant language withers a guileless soul
Hubristic linguists deem limpid oratory irksome

Words

Smart people would agree
Healthy words are sharp
Unripe words die naive spirits
Self-confident word users find simple language annoying

Moral instruction, rude, insensitivity, wordy, wicked, blunt, and contemptuous
Feelings are not my purpose
Impish (silly), laughable, artificial, playful, clownish, and clever
Reactions I'm hoping to create
As a poet, words are always on my mind. I do, however, believe that words are worthless if they are not understood.

If $2 words aren't comprehended by the audience, they are not worth a cent!

Betrayal

(RING)

There are nasty rumors about you two!

"None of it is true!"

You know I believe you.

"I'd expect you to kick my ****, too!"

That's exactly what I would do!

Just make sure this plutonic relationship is through!

(FOUR MONTHS LATER)

Meeting, heart attack, rumors again!

Believing he will tell me, he didn't descend.

Planned a visit to see my sick friend.

Then, I learned the facts that truly offend.

Could not go, I do not pretend!

Thought to myself, this will be his end.

(NEXT DAY...RING)

"Your old friend is dead....

He shot himself in the head!"

I was afraid this would be said.

This was a community he once lead.

He, himself, cut the last thread.

(REACTION)

You *******!

You *******!

You took the easy way out, tossed everyone else in a ditch!

(REFLECTION)

This betrayal of a community left so much dread.

It left a once loved man, dead,

And a young lady, who will never be right in the head!

(BETRAYAL)

You betrayed all who put you on a shelf.

But most of all, you betrayed yourself.
This is based on true life events. It has been three years, and I'm finally forcing myself to deal with it in writing. I used the silly rhyme scheme just to make it tolerable to me. Not great poetry, more like therapy.  Thanks for sharing this with me. Send me the bill. Haha

Scientists say when the honeybees die, the people will die. That is horrifying. Not our imminent doom, but the extinction of the adorable honey bee. If you converse with these insipid creatures, you will discover bees are jocular and discerning creatures. They are sarcastic and even petulant, that I find to be risible.  Their immutable ability to enhance their minute brains renders their vocabulary elementary; however, their impish nature endears them to me. Honeybees aren't dying, but listen to their buzz closely, they may **** you with hilarity; at least, that's the buzz.

Oh,' be young or old, courageous or wise,
Whatever you do, whoever you are,
Beware of those souls whose words are the guise
Hiding a past marked with an ugly scar.

Their face may be benign hiding malus
With an altruistic front for a show;
Fragrance of a rose hides a soul callus
Envious heart wanting to take your glow.

Yet, your love and honesty guides your fate
No matter what others would say and do,
Love's the beacon to steer away from hate
Enjoy life and show the world the real you.

When deceptive people spin their charmed lies
Let not their words fool you, learn to be wise.

There is a god, something whispers, no shouts

Urged me to go for a Sunday morning bike ride
It began in on an ordinary, familiar trail
Water, glasses, computer, kit, and pull the bike off the rail
As I pedaled along, I felt Him in the breeze
I saw Him in each glimmering leaf suspended in a choir of trees
The rustle of the foliage harmonized with the birds
Creating a hymnal of music that filled my soul with each word
It became abundantly clear that I was in God's community
Nature spoke His words and delivered His truth to me
