I dreamt about an alligator
- what could that possibly mean?

Am I hoping that a lizard man
will slowly romance me?

Are my desires so primitive, so ancient
that we could come to some arraignment?

Would a silent and cold-blooded lover
be as considerate as any other?

Do I long for scaly fingers
to caress me up and down?

Or lust for reptile Dolce Gabbana pumps
and a matching iguana gown?

Do I long for another dazzling week
of lying lizard-like under a mediterranean sun?

If I saw an alligator prowling there,
I’m fairly sure that I would run.

What, on earth is going on,
in my secret subconscious mind?

After years of psychotherapy,
what do you think they’d find?

I came to see an alligator, lizard or a toad,
Drove along the waters to the Tamiami Road.
We took our time to see the myths all about the park,
But still I wanted desperately,
To hear the gators bark.

Watched the dawning day arrive
Above the mossy trees,
Watched the night herald morn,
Tasted the salty breeze.
We lived a captive life
Along the shell shod shores;
Traded time for trinkets,
Shopped the main street stores.

We oiled our bodies near
The alligator swamp;
Waited bated near
The large tortoise hole;
We didn't see the turtle,
Didn't see the shell;
So looking for the gators,
Remained our only goal.

We heard one lived in the lake,
Invisible in his lair;
Eating shanked golf *****,
Go on look, if you so dare.
We watched from a distant bank,
With each kerplunk,
Our odyssey sunk.

We searched further down
The TamiamiTrail;
Studied bees in their hives,
Awed by the order we saw there,
Made us more alive.

We wandered lost in orange groves
Perfuming winding trails;
But we never saw a gator,
We never saw a tail.

So, if you want to see some gators,
Skip the Tamiami Trail.
Wow. Found this one I wrote in 1978 on my first trip to Fort Myers, FL. I was in teacher's college. Married for eight months. It was March Break (Reading Week) . There wasn't much time for writing poetry in those days; however, Ann had an Aunt and Uncle living out a Canadian winter there. They invited us down. What a terrific holiday. What another life. I sound disappointed, however, I must have done a lot. I should send this to my former wife. We don't live far apart. And we have daughters with children living in homes between us. What a world.

Alligators hide
Hungry under the surface
Stepping stones with teeth
A metaphor for life-avoid snappy rocks!
a business person
     of somewhat dubious reputation
ran for president
promising to drain those swamps
we all believe we know exist
    around centers of power

he delivered on this promise
in his very special way

draining the swamps
     of all the alligators
that are now in his government

go figure
neko-nae Aug 2017
jagged beast with
teeth aplenty,

keen eyes flashing
with thoughts of prey,
of me
no,
of my thoughts
just swimming in
circles wondering
when we'll meet--
Throwback to writing about gators as I was approaching New Orleans.
when in the world’s (supposedly) leading democracy
a new president starts his office with

making life more expensive for average home owners
signing orders threatening the health of millions
     restricting the publications of researchers
     denying global warming
     encouraging coal and oil companies
forbidding federal employees to talk to the media
going on fantasy trips about “alternative facts"
          to justify his ridiculous lies
blaming the media when asking questions and checking facts
barring leading media companies from press conferences
     waffling about his Russian connections
refusing to release his tax returns
ordering to build walls to keep out all those aliens,
like the old Chinese did, to little avail
     issuing poorly formulated presidential orders
causing confusion and harm and even deaths
banning even green card holders from entering the country
filling his cabinet with all the alligators from the swamps
he promised to clean during his campaign
people who know how to avoid paying taxes and beating the     system
but have no clue how to govern now that they ARE the system
and think they can run the USA with its 350 million citizens
          as Trump&Cronies;, USA, Inc.,
like their private family businesses, for profit
fraternizing with kings and monarchs & wannabe sultans in the near east
'democratic dictators' in the far southeast
      and wannabe czars in russia
but hesitating to confirm ties to old allies
in Europe, NATO, and the Far East
suggesting that having undeclared secret meetings
is quite OK for his campaign team members
his son and son-in-law & cetera
nominating well-known union busters
into the Federal Office of Labor
    and a billionairess widely unaware
of the existence of non-private schools
    as Secretary of Eduction
banning grandparents. grandchildren
as well as aunts and uncles
     of gratuitously selected countries
from joining their families in the USA
believing that the US president & his cronies
     stand above the law

it is high time to seriously ask
what concept
    if any
of democracy he has in mind
In view of ongoing developments, this poem is a work in progress and will be updated whenever significant "presidential orders" or some such become public.

And the monstrosity
walks up again to tap
on my tank.
GOOD MORNING *****!
You may think
I don't remember much,
but guess who forgot
to change my water last night, ha-cha-cha!
Your lucky I'm still living!
I'd leave to save you the trouble
but we both know
I don't have that choice.
Just so you know,
wearing the same underwear
two days in a row is never
acceptable, no matter the species.
When you feed me crumpled gold fish crackers,
I start feeling like a cannibal.
I'll make you a deal,
flush me and we'll call it even.
After living with you for three weeks,
I think I'll take my chances
with the sewer alligators.
So, I have always wondered what animals would say if they could comment on how humans take care of them. Kind of a weird idea.
