Sitting in the darkness,
Waiting for my ****,
An animal passes by,
My stomach will soon fill.

I can almost hear the crowd cheering
As I catch my evening snack,
I am alone out here-
I’ve lost contact with my pack.

I hear a familiar cry in the distance,
The sound soon starts to fade,
It isn’t what I thought it would be-
Above flies a mockingjay.

It’s wide wings cover up above,
For a moment I have no light,
The cry of the bird hurts me,
I try to put up a fight.

My sister, it makes me feel she’s hurt,
I lower my bow down,
She has to be home, I know she is,
But they’ve got her sound somehow.

I tell myself not to worry,
As the bird starts to fly and sing,
A beautiful song I recognize,
Like the silver in the mockingjay’s wings.
~Written for my English class, read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins to understand it!
Eyes of fear,
Mouth of shock
Because I never saw it coming.
To the arena I return again,
My darkest horror already starting.
To my left,
I turn to see my mother,
Trying not to sob,
As I rethink the memories
I always had during summers
At the Hob.
Eyes wet,
Arms tired,
Barging through the door,
While picturing the future
And all the madness that's in store.
Gale and Prim,
My only treasures,
Are soon to say goodbye.
For this year in the Quarter Quell,
No more will there be a tie.
I'm deep in thought
As I review the words
For my last farewell,
When I realize a secret for Haymitch
That I can't wait to tell.
To protect Peeta
In this terrifying Quell
Is my one and only goal,
For I want him to come back to it
And live peacefully
In this district of coal.

To be strong is what I think of
While under the stars I lay.

To be strong
The only solution
For I am the Mockingjay.
I find this while looking through my 2011 notes. Quite timely, with Catching Fire showing in cinemas and all. I was and still am an avid fan, both of poetry and The Hunger Games. My style has evolved but it's nice to see that poetry has always somehow been a part of me.
She knelt and she pleaded
For a world of peace
She knelt and she pleaded
To save a friend in need

She fought for what is right
While giving all her power and might
Yet there's still the anger
Gripping her tight

It hurt her
To see how her world is fooled
By a prideful man
Who continues the feud

She has accepted the offer
Of death itself
For she knows who she is

And she is the **Mockingjay
Bc I love the movie <3

mockingjay
Pearson Bolt Dec 2015
i hear the whistle of a mockingjay
play every time someone says your name.
a rebel girl in a patriarchal world
defying the absurd iterations of hyper-masculine
oppression that manifest themselves in solipsistic
displays of impotent aggression.
how do you muster the compassion
to forgive seventy times seven?
i want to learn to love like you.

the white noise fades away
when you and i fly
down the interstate.
the breeze teases
your hair, the sun
kisses your face
the way i'd like to.

i hope you hear my voice
every time one of our favorite songs
gets stuck inside your head,
singing in time to the rhythms of love requited.
have faith in me.

and i'm trying hard—
real hard—every day
not to lose my temper
with these circumstantial quandaries
that leave us wondering whether or not
we should press pause.

instead i'll climb the mountains
of your vertebrae so i might find
a resting place in the holiest of holies.
if only i could shrink myself down,
dance between the synaptic gaps of your brain cells,
i could see reality through your eyes—
twirling like twin nebulae,
galaxies inviting me to endless epiphanies.
i want to lose myself in your universe.

your courage is infectious.
when i hold your hand,
i summon the strength to smash the State
and all the arbitrary authorities
trying to dictate the limits of liberty,
that instigate injustice and propagate malice.
it all just falls away until it's you and me,
forever us against them all.

you're like Hermione,
time-turner included,
feeding the homeless,
leading a women's health group,
acting for a short film,
directing a play,
writing a novel,
all in a day's work.

and you breathe white-hot fire
when you fight for the disenfranchised
recognizing that those who are neutral
in situations of injustice have chosen
the side of the oppressor and it's quite
impressive how you stand-up for
the little guy or invite the social acolyte over
to your table to have a bite of whatever
vegetarian dish you cooked up last night.

i see you on the silver screen,
in each new book i read ,
in every single note i sing,
latent remnants in recited rhymes
of poetry from the one and only Bukowski:

i found what i love
and i want it to **** me.

Maegan Sep 2012
I am Katniss Everdeen.
I volunteered for my sister in The Hunger Games.
I survived, so did Peeta.
I know the Capitol hates me.
I am a rebel.
I love Peeta.
I wonder if he is alive.
I am the mockingjay, symbol of all rebels.
I killed President Coin because she killed Prim.
I live in District 12 now.
I have 2 kids.
I watch them play in the meadow, the unknown graveyard.
I am Katniss Everdeen.

How we hate to love and love to hate

//

Feeling safe

Free from vulnerability

••

I am

Growing weaker

///

( Soon to die )

••

Every second of every day

Mocking even Jesus Christ

Forgiveness

Causes too much fear

••

We who commit all the crimes

////

We the warriors

Always die

With every death

With any child's fear

All our love is but a lie

The lie that brings all others to their knees

///

In this the hour of our greatest shame

Tyrants killed by tyranny

The hunger games
Maegan Sep 2012
There was a young lady of Panem,
District 12 and had a sister named Prim,
She and Peeta won the 74th Hunger Games,
But she hated all the glory and fame,
Her name is Katniss Everdeen and she is the Mockingjay for the rebel's team.

Sail away
Darby Jul 2014
I was once a young boy wizard, who saved the world with his friends.

I was once the Mockingjay, whose
adventures had no end.

I was once Divergent, and
one choice changed my life.

I was once a Demi-god, and
my pen was also a knife.

I was once a kid with a treehouse,
That travelled to anywhere in time.

I was once a young girl who
lived in the woods, in a small house, but that was just fine.

I was once a young German orphan, stole books and read them for fun.

I was once a hobbit who found the   one ring, but still my exploits weren't done.

When I read a good book, I sail away,
To Hogwarts, The Factions, The Shire.

I am the characters I read,
I'm Leisel, I'm the ******* Fire.

So sail me away, give me a book,
I promise you it won't bore me.

For when I am reading a well written tale,
Though I am me, I'm the story.

Ever heard your voice take a trip mid sentence
And start scrambling eggs,
Ending sentences with verbs,
Mixing Soy sauce with Bacardi
And chasing the laughter down your throat with onions

Cuckolding in the middle of the afternoon
Where violet doesn’t recognize blue
As a hue worthy enough to frolic with the afternoon dew,
And then your brain smiles to your ******

And you choke on a giggle
And wiggle an index finger just a little
And remember black widows
Were once angels who bought into self fulfilling prophecies

Like wearing Armani suits barefoot
And breathing through your skin
Hoping life doesn’t die in your arms
And leave a beautiful corpse
With great stories suffocating inside

And make the subpar ambitions of an unborn child jealous.
Now ever heard a genius cry?
‘cause then you’ve heard an artist cry.
Ever ate pork fried rice on a Sunday afternoon?
‘cause if you have you’ve heard the words of Leviticus cry.

Ever read these written words?
‘cause if you have you’ve heard memories die
And pains scream in alphabets of pleasure—
The universal language of immaculate deception
That sweeps through every tongue in involuntary pneumonia

Like waltzing to the Amen’s of the devil
With oxygen choking your nostrils
And monoxide nodding your fingers to pull the trigger
Of death dancing on the tomb of your destiny

Like how a dose of metamorphosis
And a 1mg of juxtaposition
Is the repertoire of a king of curmudgeon.
But ever heard a musical note?
Then you’ve heard the story of how joy lost the war of happiness to bitterness.

Ever heard the sound of silence?
Then you’ve heard the face of evil and the thoughts of serenity
Joined at the hip of rock of Gibraltar,
Nodding heads at the gospels of Gothic prophets
Spewing sermons of a perfecter way to word the meaning of love.

Ever heard a Mockingjay sing?
Then you’ve heard the lullabies of suicide,
Like falling from grace from the eyes of your one true love
And landing on the plastic bag made of her silence
Only to wake from the land of death and catch your voice breaking at mid sentence
And mend it with the lies of sunshine that you call your life.

I am a lioness you didn’t know you disturbed and how to tame, I would have been fine without you.

2. I can’t say this was my cousin’s fault, but sometimes I wish I’d never met you so I didn’t have to feel like there’s a void in my heart that is the size of the universe. You make me feel empty - no, you empty me, even now.

3. I let you under my skin, and inside my head and you found that it was too crowded with existentialism; I thought I had found my life’s meaning when you showed up, love seemed like an awfully good reason to be alive.
3. You told me to get over it instead of helping me get through it.

4. I left because you made it seem like you had no more reason to stay.

5. You chose your friends over me, I had to choose myself over you.

6. But wherever you are, I hope you’re happy.

7. Don’t think of me as an ex. Think of me as a practice dummy, a test run, so you don’t feel bad about hurting me. I had to teach you how to love, so you’ll know what to do when you find the right one.

8. Just because I’m not the one for you anymore, doesn’t mean I never was.
8. But was I ever the right one?

9. You said I was the best thing in your life, I didn’t think ‘right now’ lasted two weeks.

10. I still keep your Valentine card between the pages of Mockingjay when Katniss realised she loved Peeta.
10. I’m still writing about you, and you seem to be doing perfectly fine without me.

11. I still remember when you told me you were up all night thinking about me, and how terrified I felt.

12. My heart literally skipped a bit when we first held hands.

13. Sometimes I forget what I told you the night of our first kiss. I said: I will fall in love with you, you don’t have to love me back. I’m gonna give you all my heart. 4 seconds of insane and humiliating courage.
13. I’m sorry I expected more than you can give.
13. Sometimes I wish I’d stayed, because leaving feels almost the same as being left.
13. I ask my cousin about her friends, hoping she’d mention how you are, I hope it’s nice where you are.
my love waits on the rising sun
beyond the sea and tides
shes knows no boundary fears no harm
and knows not of my crime

my loves waits on the throne of my heart
and in my mortal soul
i know she will sit there again
when life has taken its toll

my love swims in the fountain of youth
her spirit does not die
even when she fades away
her memory will stay mine

and even though her path is harsh
she will shine forever
cause now you know the love i've shown
and we will shine together

my love will never back away
from a fight or from a cause
my love does care too much for me
and for that she'll never stop

my love reflects in the waters of life
magnificent as the stars
she's as innocent as a puppy dog
and is more beautiful than the heavens are

my love is not just a legend
the perfect woman, and kind
one day we will be married and then
she'll be mine and only mine

and even though her path is harsh
she will shine forever
cuz now you know the love i've shown
and we will shine together

my love is a mockingjay
shes free and full of pride
my love soon will be with me
and soon she'll be my wife

my love is the rocky mountains
shes sturdy like a tree
and even through her oppression
she and i will be

my love she is the clear blue sky
shell drive away a cloud of gloom
and with her ill be happy evermore
until i reach my tomb

and even though her path is harsh
she will shine forever
cuz now you know the love i've shown
and we will shine together
this used to be a song i wrote, but i figured its more useful as a poem

Cliffhanger
Theia Gwen Apr 2014
I once knew a boy
Who breathed in words like air
We crafted a book together
And selected each sentence with great care

That boy was the best part of every genre
He flowed like sweet poetry,
Kept my thoughts racing like a thriller,
And never gave everything away like all good mysteries

But that boy left cold turkey
Scrawled me a messy ending
He would never bother to rewrite
I guess that he was only pretending

I never thought you
Would pull a Mockingjay on me
Unsatisfied and bitter
Is how I will forever be

Because our love is a cliffhanger
And you pushed me over the edge
The days waiting for you like
The wind carrying ripped pages

It was anticlimactic
No closure in sight
You let go like it was nothing
While I hold on with all my might

And so you will continue
To breathe in hearts
The way you do air
To you, it's become an art

I will carry on
Gripping a jutting branch called hope
I'll pray you give me a sequel
To the romance we wrote
I had to insult Mockingjay, i'm sorry. I just had to.
