3 Tanka Poems - 3/25/19
Bruce Levine Mar 2019
I wander the yard
Listening to the wonders
Watching the sun rise
A woodpecker in a tree
Finding peace with the soul

Heroes come and go
Life-long battles with day-dreams
Opening new doors
As flexing muscles abound
Under golden canopies

Following the day
Passages open pathways
Through the yellow dawn
In step with wind-swept moments
Following the path beyond

The World Goes Forward
Bruce Levine Mar 2019
The world goes forward
For better or worse
Time travels at the speed of light
Toward its own destiny
Artists toil under the canopy
   of forgotten memories
In the age of technology
Does anyone care
We surround ourselves
In a glass bubble
   of our own making
Shielding the sun’s rays
   from reality
While bending them into conformity
The bubble bursts
And time is thrown into the vortex
Screaming for surrender
A temper-tantrum of fate
Grasping at straws
Yet knowing no relief
Forever the moment
Held in a wine glass
   of shimmering incandescence
As the world goes forward
Without relief

In the open air
The fireflies are hopeful
Happy brand new day

Further down the road
Daffodils in a playground
Brighten up the day

Wanting inner peace
Corner stones of the moment
Following the dream

Trees
Bruce Levine Mar 2019
I close my eyes against the sun
Then barely open them.
A new view comes before me.
Is it reality?
The trees are bare;
Barren limbs against the sky.
Are they reaching for Heaven?
What are they doing?
What are they telling me?
Is this an epiphany
Or a transitory vision
Of trees against the sky?
Bare limbs,
Barren branches.
I close my eyes against the sun.

The Sun
Bruce Levine Mar 2019
The sun is just burning off
The morning mist as it
Pierces the leaves of the trees
Casting a wakening glow
On the landscape
Bringing warmth to the day
And to the hearts of lovers
After the cool and restful night

The day has begun
The smells of coffee
And breakfast permeates
The air as life is
Renewed

Joyous surroundings
Fill the souls as the sun
Fills the sky
Lighting the way
To work and to play
And love engulfs
The lovers who
Bask in the glow
Of the sun
And their love

Another day closer to spring
The sun just a little bit brighter
The air just a little bit warmer
Filled with the promise of spring

Day trips to nowhere
Just to ride the moment
Holding hands in silence
Exploring sights unknown

Empty beaches beckon
As timeless as tomorrow
Forever holding the entry
To paths and lanes beyond

Seaport towns and cities
Golden crescent mountains
Open arms resounding
With hope each day can bring

Another day closer to springtime
Powerful moments outnumber
Joyously filling the daylight
Another day closer to spring

Happily Never After
Bruce Levine Mar 2019
Happily never after
Is a tale too often told
When dreams have been discarded
And faith no longer bold

The empty trough forgotten
Amid sorrows that never end
And hope that travels nowhere
With messages one cannot send

The broken line of pavement
Erased by years of rain
That once had been a highway
But now a road of pain

If happily never after
Is all that’s left ahead
The tears remember good times
And life’s an unmade bed

The hope that self-renews now
A chance for dreams to come true
Is worth another mem’ry
A life ahead that’s due

Pristine Snow
Bruce Levine Mar 2019
Pristine snow
Reflecting light
In pools of shadows
Radiating images
Of bygone times
Centuries old
Floating hemispheres
Suspended in time
Like cave paintings
And orange marmalade
Frozen by the cold
That melts like
Pristine snow

Snowy Night
Bruce Levine Mar 2019
It snood, it snowed, it’s snowing
The ground is covered in white
And even our dog’s footprints
Will certainly not last through the night

Children are outside playing
Choosing up sides left and right
Piling up mounds of the white stuff
In preparation for a snowball fight

Looking out through the window
Safe and warm inside
I cast a giant shadow
Happy where I can hide

And so I’ll leave the day to the snowplows
Who struggle along in their plight
Smoothing the roads and the sidewalks
And to all I wish a good night

The List
Bruce Levine Mar 2019
Where do you go
At the end of the list
As paperless paper
Remains on the roll

Standing with nothing
However refined
And entry forever
Forever declined

The faraway mountains
The tears never shed
Forgetting tomorrow
No more the bells toll

Not asking or crying
As time marches on
The list one remembers
Forever is gone

Disjointed Metaphors
Bruce Levine Feb 2019
How many disjointed metaphors
Can be fit in a poem?

To the land of unknown
Ethan Frome at home
The highway of September
August ‘til December

Exorcising goblins
A caldron of stew
Before Santa meets Easter bunny
And the storks flew

Beware the Ides of March
The RCMP
Afraid of forever
In a plastic sea

Hold bravely the heroes
Of unexplained mirth
And metaphors laughing
That cover the earth

The stealthy stalking of bees
Happens each year in the spring
When flowers grow under the trees
And song birds are starting to sing

The pollen that’s turned into honey
Bears fruit for the people we know
But bees think it’s just pretty funny
To put on a song and dance show

When Daisy the dog sees a field
Of flowers that bloom in the spring
She stealthily stalks bees for breakfast
And gobbles them down without a sting

I wonder how Daisy does do it
She swallows them whole one and all
The bees keep working unnoticed
While Daisy devours them all

Half way to December
Brings mem’ries of the past
Of joyous Christmas mornings
New mem’ries that will last

Forever on the highway
To good times filled with cheer
And happy ever after
Renown throughout the year

Tomorrow brings new sunshine
And golden rays galore
To bring a new beginning
With New Year’s Day restore

The fervor now remembered
With toasts of pure egg nog
The entries of tomorrow
Remain on life’s new blog

Heaven Remembers
Bruce Levine Feb 2019
Heaven remembers
The fortitude
Wrought in time
That outlasts infinity
And gives strength
Through the simplest emotions
Guiding the pathways
Through forests primeval
Or oceans outlasting
The desert refined
By sand dunes of mem’ries
To hold and remember
Uncertain of context
But travel in light-years
And journeys forgotten
Remembered
Defined
By new journeys taken
And new hope abounding
The future forgiving
New moments sublime

The Greatest Love of All
Bruce Levine Feb 2019
Here’s to a breakfast appetizer
The start of another day
Waking to the loved one
Brought from miles away

The longing we thought would last forever
Is gone with a single kiss
That brings the joys of a lifetime
Filled with days of bliss

The golden days of every day
The passion we’ll always feel
A love that will last forever
And ever because it’s real

Simple joys like holding hands
Or walking in the snow
Mem’ries in the making
To last as long as we’ll know

Happy times through summer
Winter, spring and fall
Gathering momentum through the years
The greatest love of all

Reality Forsaken
Bruce Levine Feb 2019
Reality forsaken
For a chance at the golden ring
And though it’s only made of brass
A chance to grab it still could bring

Dreams of glory yet remain
Waiting on the shelf
For father time to come along
To turn them into wealth

And so our good friend harkens
And listens for the call
Remembering dreams of glory
Before a mighty fall

And time alone can put aside
The fears of remaining true
Refusing to abjure the dreams
Or asking where or who

Can take a chance again each day
Looking to the goal
For brass or gold it’s still a ring
A circle with a hole

The Feather of Fate
Bruce Levine Feb 2019
The line of evergreen trees
Paraded in the sunset
Offset by the piercing highway
Following the path to the end

Breaking away from the crowd
They remained in silent understanding
Breathing each other’s essence
In a timeless momentum

Longing for a single pathway
Leading through the forest of emotions
In a garden of gilded fantasies
Thawed by the rays of passion

The final memory of tomorrow
Written on the feather of fate
Held in the palm of forever
Wrapped in a golden band of love

The Last Poem
Bruce Levine Feb 2019
Alone again
Dreams keep
Coming to an end
Unfulfilled promises
Thrown away
With a kiss
Sorrow reignited
Passion extinguished
Forever forgotten
In the blink of an eye
A lifetime of hopes
And dreams
Piled in a funeral pyre
Longing overtaking
A dismembered corpse
As the tangible
Artifacts remain
A constant reminder
Of a second broken heart
Unsung and unheralded
Commitments forsaken
The grand scheme
That appeared perfection
Gone and only the dust
Of another cremation
Of the soul
Remaining forever

The Quest (complete)
Bruce Levine Feb 2019
And I don’t mean The Impossible Dream, because the only thing impossible is that one can never reach the end and, in one sense, maybe the quest is the end unto itself.

If one can never reach the end of the quest
Is the quest, then, an impossible dream?
Or is the quest the end unto itself?

Or, maybe, the quest is the end unto itself.

There is no such thing as an impossible dream
Because the only thing impossible is that one can never reach the end
And, in one sense, maybe the quest is the end unto itself

Lovers Parting
Bruce Levine Feb 2019
Lovers parting
Their hearts unfulfilled
Fending off the heartbreak
That should never have been
A heart stilled

Looking through the window
Of twenty years or more
Wondering how it happened
The days gone by
And washed ashore

To live on a deserted island
As emptiness abounds
No matter where the island
With or without people
Loneliness surrounds

All too many islands
In fantasy or real
To the lovers parted
Their hearts remaining still
Too empty now to feel

Eternity
Bruce Levine Feb 2019
The roads not taken
And the roads we missed
The turns mistaken
That led us to persist

The happiness remembered
With each passing day
The memories dismembered
Trying to find the way

And longing for the past
Reveals the dusty road
That once had been and we thought would ever last
But time, it seems, became too heavy a load

And the empty days that still go on
The loneliness that weighs so heavily
Can’t bring back the days now gone
Nor answer my tearful plea

The years ahead look empty now
With no roads to travel and nothing to see
The finite seconds that disallow
And only love lasts ‘til eternity

A Slow Walk To Nowhere
Bruce Levine Feb 2019
A slow walk to nowhere
A metaphor for life
Hills and valleys flatten
Amid the daily strife

Of drifting ever onward
The ending never clear
If today or if tomorrow
The last hurrah is here

Like walking the dog through raindrops
Pellets of water coating my head
Sniffing the ground for nothing
Or something being dead

Longing for resolution
Holding hands again
Yesterday’s tomorrows
In bed with us and then

Turning off the faucet
Of guilt and pain gone by
A chance that’s barely taken
Happiness worth the try

A faster walk to somewhere
Only the future knows
A happy life together
A restful night’s repose

Sneezes and Wheezes
Bruce Levine Dec 2018
An ordinary cold is a hateful thing
With sneezes and wheezes and coughing that bring
Tremulous moments while holding one’s breath
Trying to stave off once more a feeling of death.

The mornings of glory no longer abound
The nights filled with snoring, a ghastly old sound.
With days hard to get through and work gone askew
While others are playing or getting their due.

No more feeling happy, no more feeling sad
There’s only the feeling of just feeling bad
And hope of recov’ry that once seemed so near
Is lost like a mem’ry and moments of fear.

As days filled with sneezing and wheezing move on
And glimmers of hope that this cold will be gone
For sooner or later there must be a day
When the ordinary cold has outlived its stay.

Empty laughter
Often fading
Among the trees
Of the nether-fold
Nirvana forsaken
Amidst the storm
Of the infinite
Paradoxical anagrams
Representing the
Vortex of time
Leaving in isolation
The magnitude
Unfulfilled
By a destiny removed
Renamed yet unknown
As a symbol
A metaphor

Twist of fate
Longing for the impossible
Parodies etched in paradiddles
Refocused without rhyme
Now forsaken
Amid the Pine Barrens

Good artists borrow

A Picasso quote
I look in the mirror
I see myself
And yet I paint
With Picasso strokes
Picasso lines
Picasso designs
Am I possessed
By Picasso?
Do I have to dress
Like Picasso?
Evolution
Survival of the fittest
Am I only a part of the
Picasso food chain?
Does Picasso reach out,
A brush in hand,
Stroking a canvass
‘Til I understand?
Am I an emissary,
A foible for his art?
Do I face stagnation?
Do I play a part?
But no small parts
Only small actors
I retrace my steps
I look again in the mirror
I find my reality
Picasso is dead
And I live on

Casting a wakening glow
On the landscape
Bringing warmth to the day
And to the hearts of lovers
After the cool and restful night

The day has begun
The smells of coffee
And breakfast permeates
The air as life is
Renewed

Joyous surroundings
Fill the souls as the sun
Fills the sky
Lighting the way
To work and to play
And love engulfs
The lovers who
Bask in the glow
Of the sun
And their love

Empty Hours
Bruce Levine Nov 2018
Empty hours
Now filled
With joy
Everlasting

Frozen mem’ries
Held still
In time
Remembered

Future glories
So close
At hand
Remaining

Time forsaken
To share
Our lives
Forever

The Greatest Love of All
Bruce Levine Nov 2018
Here’s to a breakfast appetizer
The start of another day
Waking to the loved one
Brought from miles away

The longing we thought would last forever
Is gone with a single kiss
That brings the joys of a lifetime
Filled with days of bliss

The golden days of every day
The passion we’ll always feel
A love that will last forever
And ever because it’s real

Simple joys like holding hands
Or walking in the snow
Mem’ries in the making
To last as long as we’ll know

Happy times through summer
Winter, spring and fall
Gathering momentum through the years
The greatest love of all

A Second Heart
Bruce Levine Nov 2018
Grief punctures the heart
And slices the soul
A love, if true, is never
Forgotten
And yet remains irretrievable
There is no cure
No antidote
For the cancer of grief
Which devours the body
And consumes the mind
With zombiesque ferocity
Ravaging the flesh of a
Walking carcass
Why Heaven has chosen
To perpetrate such a punishment
Is beyond human understanding
Mere mortals were never given
Powers sufficient to plunge
The depths of grief
Hope of happiness
Remains caged like a lion
A corpse being devoured by maggots
And yet, inextricably,
Destiny can intervene
Fate can conquer
The lassitude of time
Conspiracies unforeseen coalesce
Bridging oceans
With glacial understanding
That alone empowers
The universe
To swoop up two souls
Lost in the limbo of time
Destined to fulfill their fate
Carved with flint and stone
A cavern in granite
Now magically transformed
Into pavement as smooth as glass
As crystalline as a stream
Frozen motion
That recaptures the
Essence of life
Spreading a new love
Like a waterfall
Cascading against the rocks
In a rainbow of spray
To tie two people
In a ring of love
Forever sustained
By the growth of
A second heart

A special day
A wondrous day
A profound day
A day filled with happy moments
Of hope for the future
A day filled with sadness
And reflections of the past
Opening a window
Turning the key in the lock
That closes the door
And opens on the other side
Of the ocean
A chasm crossed physically
And metaphorically
A lifetime ahead
Filled with hope and dreams
Love and laughter
A special day
A wondrous day
A profound day

Van Gogh
Bruce Levine Nov 2018
Van Gogh pervades the air
Mounds of color
Broad free strokes
Freedom unleashed
I look at his work
I look at mine
Starry Night
Am I an extension?
A continuation
In the process
Toward a final goal?
Toward freedom?
Removing the shackles of history
Preventing in his lifetime
The glories remaining unsung
Canvasses unpainted
A chance encounter with fate
And yet I watch
As my hand swiftly crosses the canvass
And I wonder
Would I be here?
Would we all be here?
Are our lives enriched
By his struggle?
Do I face a blank, white canvass
With his eyes?
Do his shadows become mine?
Does the light reflect
As he saw in Arles,
Transcending time?
Enigma
Un-defined
Holding the ghost of reality
Penetrating timeless vacuums
Unable to escape
Unwanting to escape
Unanswered questions
Of metamorphosis
Of passion and devotion
Passed through the ionosphere
Permeating the atmosphere
Filling the crevasses of his life
Of our lives
Of my hand and eyes
Seeing his brush-strokes come alive
Transmutations founded at the precipice
Of a cliff’s edge
To linger in other hands
In my hands
Holding a brush
Dripping color
Blown by the winds of time
Inheritance
The future untold
Perseverance
Preoccupation
Permanence
A legacy of searching
Fulfilled in eternity
In a single drop
Of color

The Seesaw
Bruce Levine Nov 2018
A seesaw of emotions
Depending on the day
Elevated to Shangri-La
Or thrown into Hades lake

Fascination with the moments
Of a love that seemed to fade
No longer the bright responses
That took my breath away

In unison without breathing
Oxygen depleted by words
And longing for that single thought
That transforms an empty heart

Oh too many tears now
Have brought me to this point
Of total isolation
Waiting for a simple retort

Another day will pass now
And the seesaw shifts in place
Which way it will go tomorrow
Unending torment in its wake

A seesaw of emotions
No longer ringing true
Fearing the future mocking
And fate’s gigantic mistake
