Disappointment
Emily Jun 2010
Makes my tongue thick
And my throat close
Like my heart is having
A terrible reaction.

Instead of a shot of antihistamines
All I really need
Is a little reassurance
And your kisses.

I do not want to love you
But when you leave
It is like a punch
In my stomach.

So please
Do not leave
Me here
Alone.

Purple.

The colour

of bruised knees

(pain)

and lips begging

for oxygen

(breathlessness).

A hue

caught somewhere

between blue and red

(two extremes).

Blue for misery,

brokenness

(frigid, the tundra),

blue like the ocean

(drowning, an ode

to Ophelia).

Red for anger,

passion

(burning, the inferno),

red like flame

(gasoline for blood,

playing hide and seek

with embers).

Ultraviolet radiance

(blinding, turn your eyes away

the Purple).

Vibrant

(well, not so vibrant)

yet dark

(sometimes, too dark).

Soft

(just as the lilac

blossom is)

but harsh

(the bee that devours

the blossom's nectar).

China Doll complexion

(rosy cheeks,

skin the colour of moon dust)

paralleled against whirling eyes,

surging pools of burst blood vessels

and flared veins

(dear god, the Madness!)

Poetry personified--

counting syllables

instead of counting sheep

(a spoonful of codeine

to wash down the tears).

Words engraved into flesh

(wearing sadness like it's

crushed velvet--lovely);

these ink-stained wrists

(or is that blood?)

Empty band-aid boxes

(the scars still ache

whenever it rains)

and empty liquor bottles

(enamel eroding,

mouth swimming in froth).

Fearful of the night,

for the night will

surely bring the mourning

(A seer-- forever dreading

"tomorrow").

Self-medicating with

Antihistamines and Tequilla

(Witch Doctor,

burned at the stake

in another life).

Dreaming in pastels

(when the insomnia

permits it)

but existing in a

grey-scale reality

(inhaling this pain

like it's cigarette smoke).

"A penny for your thoughts?"

(Haven't you forgotten?

They've stopped making pennies

because this world no longer

has any use for them).

A reflection in the mirror

(glass shatters,

pupils collapse in on themselves).

 ̶B̶e̶a̶u̶t̶i̶f̶u̶l̶

(Please,

take away this body!)

"I love you..."

(unrequited,

not pretty enough

to be touched).

A serenade for him(s)

(rejected letters,

"maybe we should

just be friends").

Eternal

u

m

m

e

t

t

(wind knocked from lungs,

soul plucked from body).

Lips shatter as

the kiss the cement

(step on a crack

break your mother's

back).

Mother,

who named her child

jade

for the gemstone

nephrite

( ̶p̶r̶e̶c̶i̶o̶u̶s̶),

for the green,

Mother Nature's

chromatic blush

(wilting dandelions,

forsaken wishes).

Green.

(green?)

It's a colour that

never quite suited

a girl like me--

a girl with a purple soul.

Dream Schemes
Miss Grim Jan 2016
It seems these antihistamines
Are causing reoccurring dreams
For every time I go to bed
The same old scene is in my head
Like the one where all my teeth fall out
As I sit and pluck them out of my mouth
This one causes a lot of strife
For I've had this dream my entire life
So I searched for answers everywhere
And this is what they had to share
The native said it signifies
Remorse I feel from telling lies
Which I guess would be appropriate
I tend to say things I regret
So I went to see a medium
To trace back where this all begun
We tried to get mister Jung
But as the Latin rolled off her tongue
To our surprise
Before our eyes
Stood the spirit of Sigmund Freud
Claiming I need *** to fill the void
A conversation I'd rather avoid
Needless to say we ended the spell
I gave her my paycheck and bid farewell
And as I exited out to the street
I almost hung my head in defeat
But the natives words came back to me
Bringing a sudden epiphany
It occurred to me as I was walking
I really need to just stop talking.
Perhaps I'll be a silent monk
To help me get out of this funk
But that just sounds absurd
I can figure out how this problem incurred
I don't need to see a therapist
Or invoke a psychoanalyst
I will just continue on my quest
Until I obtain some dreamless rest
I'm sure I can find the connection
By immersing in more self-reflection
So when I go to bed tonight
I'll study my dreams with all my might!!
I may be delusional.

Antihistamines
Rebecca Oct 2020
Her blanket is insecurity,
her pillow is commotion.
She gladly bites the hand that feeds
her curiosity of emotion.

Colors are what she feels,
this she finds true.
When sadness does appear
she sees a cliched blue.

But when happiness is present
pink and purple will adhere.
Blossoms of pastels
throughout her atmosphere.

Antihistamines are used
to shut her weary eyes.
Insomnia will go away
until tomorrow night.
“There are some nights when sleep plays coy,
aloof and disdainful.
And all the wiles
that I employ to win
its service to my side
are useless as wounded pride, and much more painful.”

the anatomy of your enamel is a gregarious combination of sunshine and pouring sweat.
Queen Anne's Lace is lining Prom West like a gospel chorus,
and your violets are screaming an unheard passion.

my hideous self-deprecation is a mute, static television signal in your ever-glowing radius-
a presence growing slowly and humbly, yet erupting all at once like a plentiful vegetable garden-
tomato plants, rosemary, and your Grand Canyon-eyes of brightness in full bloom.

it is here where your adjectives become potent antihistamines,
where these action words are soft fingernails on my scalp,
where your histories write textbooks of moon cycles and tiger lilies.

your palms on my chest and lips on the soft spots,
your amber irises are the key to the city.

I will dance with this infinity-
with each crack in your palm and rose in your heart,
under these golden, Northern streetlights for
the rest of time.

This is a hangover
From old days gone by
Old thoughts grown older
Gnarled & tangled
Essence of confusion
Tired and tried
Why can't I sleep?
I deserve to sleep
Earlier I fell into a dream
That was unpleasant
Now on antihistamines
I feel the pull of undiscovered rest
Again at my door
There are lessons in dreams
There are images I fail to recognize
I feel sad & sick & hungry for the world to open up
Hungry for myself to open up
I am trying
I am tired
I am beaten down w/ too many
Images
Thoughts
Sounds that hold no bearing
I am standing in the kitchen alone
Standing at absolute zero
Nowhere
Gone
My proteins come apart
My collective memory urges
Some insistence
Which cannot be known
It is a curse--******* it
God bless it
I love it
Earlier I didn't want to
Have ***
Or talk
Or think
Or know
Or see
Or walk
Or Be
Now I am
Wondering what I
Always want
Rats of the same breed
Learn the same tricks
Quicker
There is evidence for this
Hypothesis
For fixed laws
Constants of nature
These are used
To convince us
of what?
Fundamentals?
Why is there
an interest
in anything above
or below
what is possible of meat?
Old libraries
Hold volumes
Of thoughts
Thrown away
When new replacements
Drop onto the heads
Of failure-minds
Decimal points
Line the walls of thought
With tiny values
Of whatever you want
Whatever sense you make of it
There is no science of this
No way to explain
These years
These images
This nose
Could the speed of light explain it?
If so, what are the implications?
Is it constant?
Is it known?
What is known?
What has slowed and what has grown and what is hiding in the shadowed distance
In the minds of intellectual freak-boys
How can you be sure of present values?
Can there be such things?
In existence?
Can you SOLVE it?
Can you change?
Define a thing
Now you are insane
Now you are an instant thought
Unbound
Volume pleases
Now unbound
Now just pointing
At a clown
Changing
Changing
Changing
Changing
Changing

Antihistamines antidepressants and paracetamol
Tanned skin white skin unexplainable
Falling and flying now one and the same
Who knew about the summer rain
Lying here you confirm my fear
I love you more than life itself my dear
I’d hate for you to up and leave
But I couldn’t fill your wildest dreams
Your wishing for another I know
She may act like me but she won’t
She’d do the things I do not do
She’d love you different to how I do
But she’d never look at you the way I do
She wouldn’t fall in love with your smile like me
She wouldn’t kiss you before you sleep
Or when her insomnia woke her
Or when her anxiety got her
But I do
I do because you mean everything to me
I do because your my remedy
I do because maybe I’m not scared of being in love with you anymore
I’m in love with the idea and thought of you
The being and existence of you
I’m in love with you
I literally wrote this today,
Thank you for reading x

Edgar Allan Poe Takes a Selfie and I Take an Antihistamine

Quoth the critic:
                             No one’s ravin’ y’know
Something about a bird – maybe a crow?
Lenore married a physicist on the go
Plutonium shore, not Plutonian (oh!)

Quoth the critic:
No more her beau
She kept the cage, but gave the bird to Poe
Anyway, the scientist’s name is Moe
She says his nuclear fission makes her glow

Quoth the critic:
Let’s end this show
(Antihistamines – I shoulda said no)
(‘Choo!)

                                             Shouting Out Disease

                                     “I want no more thinking!”

-Henry II to his barons in Becket

Soap for washing hands is not Republican
Eyeglasses never claim to be Democrat
Toothbrushes cannot be Communist plots
Antibiotics are not **** schemes

A pressure bandage has no Socialist leanings
Shampoo is not an expression of Fascism
Antihistamines never speak of the Falange
And nose drops never sing “The East is Red”

But when the topic of the Covid comes up
The flags are unfurled and the chanting begins
